3. Tristan da Cunha

“On 10 October 1961, the eruption of Queen Mary's Peak forced the evacuation of the entire population of 264 individuals.[17][18] Evacuees took to the water in open boats and sailed to uninhabited Nightingale Island, where they were picked up by a Dutch passenger ship that took them via Cape Town to Britain.[18] The islanders arrived in the UK to a big press reception, and were settled in an old Royal Air Force camp near Calshot, Hampshire.[18] The following year a Royal Society expedition went to the islands to assess the damage, and reported that the settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas had been only marginally affected. Most families returned in 1963.”

Kerguelen is my favourite.

Another obvious one but Sable Island, 200 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia (maybe that doesnt count as remote). It has some horses. People used to come and take them and put them down the mines until the Canadian government put a stop to it in 1960. Now they just do their thing without worrying about being stolen and put down a mine

Not so remote. Also Nearly 500 ships and their sailors have met their horrible end on the coasts of Sable island.

There's also a long tale of a pirate's treasure reportedly buried on Sable Island, there are several folk who've spent the life-savings of investors searching for it through the centuries.

Both Canada and Denmark claim Hans Island. Periodically, each country will send an expedition, replace the other country's flag with their own, and leave a bottle of alcohol for the next visitors. (Canada favors Canadian Club, Denmark schnapps; photo by Toubletap.) pic.twitter.com/yzbOmo2nuB

You should read 'The Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will' by Judith Schalansky. Lovely book.
