Huh? Steak sauce?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth's on one his custodian of the parochial tips.

M1. M6 even better.

But what I always wanted to know is what is the difference/relation between the A1 and the A1(M)

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Thousand miles an ho-uh

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the A1(M) just saying 'Hey, this is gonna become a motorway in a bit'?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

A40!

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the a1(m) is the motorway section of the a1, which happens around stevenage, and also doncaster, and presumably elsewhere.

i like east england, the a1 is the demarcation. i like the sloping houses near doncaster, i like where it veers to the east near retford/newark, i like where you peel off, to sneak up on finchley from behind, i like archway, i like that its relatively near goole, i like when travelling north late at night, you switch on to the m62 at ferrybridge.

its possible that i like the M180 better sometimes, but it isn't as iconic, and doesnt have the feel of going anywhere

gareth (gareth), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

A 4020 the only road that matters to me.

(sarah, it's roads and motorways)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

TOday it was M1, normally its a1

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

B3781!

Graham (graham), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

off the A650/A6038

i used to live on the B1462 itself (never thought i'd miss it as much as i do now, its my nostalgia road)

off the A1201 had its good times too

near the B102 (but i dont think it will take on a special significance this time, i dont feel the attachment)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

But the best road of all is the A10. I was born within walking distance of it, still live within walking distance of it. (Kinda like the River Lee or Lea.)

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

B3187, I mean.

Graham (graham), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

M1 = smooth

A1 has roundabouts (but slowing down, gear changes, etc. help keep you awake.) 5(?) lane bit north from Alconbury is grebt, once nearly hit the windscreen when the engine choked as my speed topped 100mph without me realising I was going anywhere near that fast.

A1 crosses those coool counties Rutland & Lincolnshire.

A1, easy. Borderland, as Gareth says, and even the motorway bits feel less disconnected from their immediate environment than the M1 does.

B3187, I mean.

huh? no brg30 :(

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 2 November 2002 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm, sweaty Sid's on the A1 near Newark, a tiny cabin heaving with fishermen early on a Sunday morning while Sid works behind the hotplate, the sweat dripping off the end of his nose and hissing as it hits the hotplate.

The A1 was the fishing road all throughout my teens.

The A1 also has scaremongering road signs that say "221 people have died on this road since 1995" or something (I've only driven it from Edinburgh to Alnwick so can't really comment further. I recently drove/was a passenger on the M1 between the M6 and London, and can think of nothing remarkable about it at all).

However, I like that picture Gareth just posted.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

its ferrybridge, where the a1 meets the m62.

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Gareth, can you justify your M180 love? It's a horribly boring road.

I love the new Ferrybridge A1(M)/M62 interchange that's opening next year. Lots of exciting-looking flyovers.

Is it wrong to think that the cooling towers have a strange beauty?

Now I pick the A23 because I'm going to live just a little bit further away from it.

M1 goes to dark heart of England therefore not exactly dud but a bit gloomy certainly.
I've always lived on the A1, in NW London, N London and Edinburgh. Too many roundabouts in the middle though.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
i dont love the m180 really, i just found it eerie, late at night, so empty

i realised, since i have lived in london, i have never lived more than 3 miles from the a1. in my life, i dont think i have lived more than 30 miles from the a1, its the backbone of everything. i like how its possible to drive for hundreds of miles down the a1 and it comes almost to my doorstep

i currently live about 300 yards from the a1

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

theres a book about the A1, photographic journey type deal. its not very good though

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Pinefox has a great song about the A1.

youn, Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:35 (nineteen years ago)
