I’m with AF, if you mean “honest” then IMO is all you need

“humble” is sometimes a valuable modifier when offering an opinion, “honest” is not - who the fuck lies about their opinions?

'in my not so honest opinion'

cmon

think

j., Saturday, 5 May 2018 05:31 (seven years ago)

if u think humble adds anything and honest doesnt then youre just blinkered

theyre both modifiers in the sentence, both serving a purpose

people add truthclaimers, reinforcements of their sincerity into their sentences all the time. seriously, they do. honestly. scouts honour. word. no lie.

people claim their opinion as humble fuck all of the time.

and when someone claims honesty, ghey have the right to do so. but an assertion that their opinion is humble or otherwise is vanity and ought to be the judgement of the listener or verified by other means.

humbkers are cunts basically

.b derf (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 May 2018 08:09 (seven years ago)

Humble is the “correct” one because “in my humble opinion” is an idiom that goes back decades (a pretty stuffy, lawyerly? one - searching for the variant “it is my MOST humble opinion that” on google books turns up a lot of mid-20th century legislative committees). Anyway the use of humble isn’t vanity - it’s essentially a garden-variety hedge (dys) but that’s irrelevant anyway cause the people who turned the phrase into an internet acronym were almost certainly using it in a jocular, lightly ironic way - ie the ns in imnsho was already implied.

What seems to have happened is that people in recent years who are unfamiliar with the phrase have made the (mistaken but perfectly logical) assumption that the h is the same h as in tbh, cause why would you go to “humble” if you didn’t already know “in my humble opinion” was a thing? And as we’re all good descriptivists it’s now both, and which way you read it says nothing about you except whether you happened to know that was what it was supposed to be a billion years ago when we were all learning the internet

I'm willing to believe humble is correct. I voted for honest.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 5 May 2018 08:36 (seven years ago)

I’d like to vote for honest tbh but to do so would be dishonest, I’ve only just found out honesters exist and I doubt I’ll ever read it differently

Also as mh noted in another thread, “if you want my honest opinion”/“I’ll give you my honest opinion” are things ppl say, but you won’t hear someone use the specific construction “in my honest opinion” out loud, because it’s a stupidly clunky way of just saying “honestly” (whereas, old-fashioned as it is, I feel like I’ve definitely heard “in my humble opinion” come out of someone’s mouth)

F# A# (∞), Saturday, 5 May 2018 17:29 (seven years ago)

Don't get why some people think "in my humble opinion" sounds pompous or vain. It's a useful hedge/modifier.

Humble is the “correct” one because “in my humble opinion” is an idiom that goes back decades (a pretty stuffy, lawyerly? one - searching for the variant “it is my MOST humble opinion that” on google books turns up a lot of mid-20th century legislative committees). Anyway the use of humble isn’t vanity - it’s essentially a garden-variety hedge (dys) but that’s irrelevant anyway cause the people who turned the phrase into an internet acronym were almost certainly using it in a jocular, lightly ironic way - ie the ns in imnsho was already implied.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 00:28 (seven years ago)

Tbf, the Buzzfeed question is preceded by a write-up by someone who i) thinks it is "honest" and ii) tells us that they have done a previous survey that went strongly in favour of "honest", and is thus influencing the impressionable voter to think that "in my honest opinion" might be a common expression and not a redundant string of words.

both are common, humble is pretty dated

it's practically in there with prithee mlady tbph

gneb farts (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 00:53 (seven years ago)

OK, if you've actually heard people say "in my honest opinion", that's fair. I haven't.

(I can think of situations where it can make a difference for the speaker to specify that they are expressing an opinion as opposed to a normative claim btw.)

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 00:57 (seven years ago)

“In my humble opinion” would be a silly thing to actually say in YOOL 2018 because everyone would know that you are just saying it to mean “in my arrogant opinion”. Whereas imho is an Internet particle, like “like” or “um”, that serves a prosodic rather than semantic purpose.

valorous wokelord (silby), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 00:57 (seven years ago)

All normative claims fail, ergo it should be taken as read that I’m expressing an opinion.

I don't see how those are arguments for "honest"! (And in any case, the ironic "in my humble opinion" does say something more than imo would on its own.) At most, they might be arguments against my half-assed nsh prescriptivism. A dedicated descriptivist would abstain here.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 01:09 (seven years ago)

NB I’m not arguing for “honest”, I’m just making unrelated comments, probably because I’m the best, in deems’ opinion.
