Do you return your coathaners to the dry cleaners - the reuse thread

I realised today waiting to pick up my dry cleaning that no one else I line was returning wire hangers to the dry cleaners. It seems very odd to me not to do this, I have no use for them but clearly the cleaner does. Do people just throw them away or recycle them.

Thought is was worth discussing things we reuse and return.

Other things I am pretty consistent at reusing

Coffee cup
Water bottle
Shopping bags

These are all mine and provided by me. I’d love to have returnable bottles but that’s bad not a thing here.

Needs 'Never use dry cleaners' option.

I used to keep the hangers and use them for whenever I’d travel for work, about a week every two months or so. But we go to the dry cleaners a lot less now and I got a new rolling duffel, so these days I just cut up the hangers into very small pieces and eat them.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 26 May 2018 10:08 (seven years ago)

idk man I've used one about three times in my life i didn't realise they would treat hangers as fungible.

lana del boy (ledge), Saturday, 26 May 2018 10:10 (seven years ago)

OK just go to your local housewares store and splurge on a bunch of wooden hangers.

Then, next time you need something dry cleaned just roll it up and put it in a bag if you have to. Don’t ever give them something on your own hanger.

Hanging luggage: seriously bullshit, or just a phase?

El Tomboto, Saturday, 26 May 2018 10:18 (seven years ago)

I'm saving them to use in illegal abortions.

I maintain hanger equilibrium by bringing my clothes back to the cleaner on the same hangers the cleaners gave me the last time. Between visits the clothes hang on those hangers.

you hang your dirty clothes? madness.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 26 May 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

yes; i only take things to the dry cleaners maybe 6 times a year these days but I always do take them whatever wire hangers we have laying about and they take them happily. I hate those things.

I really wish cleaners wouldn't wrap everything in plastic too. what a waste

I think I've been to a dry cleaner once in my life! That was because I got mud on my coat when I was pissed. I did not return the hanger if there was one

I refuse to own clothes that must be dry cleaned.

Yeah I cut back on the dry cleaning, is mad expensive. Now I just a bit more disheveled at work, so what me worry?

calstars, Saturday, 26 May 2018 19:41 (seven years ago)

My clothes aren't dirty until I say they are. Until then they can hang.

Josefa, Saturday, 26 May 2018 23:36 (seven years ago)

Haven't used a dry cleaner in um like 15 years?

Wrinkle-free dress shirts work fine when hung up immediately out of the dryer, or even just worn slightly damp.

I used to dry clean (and always recycled hangars) until I saw the most intense, focused "man ironing a shirt" video ever.

Anyway, ironing is now an insta-zen thing - sorta like using a clothesline instead of a dryer. Coffee cups, water bottles, and shopping bags are all I things I purchase/recycle.

My local dry cleaners had an amazing deal of washing and ironing five shirts for a fiver until recently, which seemed unbelievably cheap to me. The price has gone up a little now, but I've not been wearing shirts so often.

i only dry clean my winter coat, the hanger they give it back to me on is the best hanger in my closet, i have like 2 or 3 of them now, i just keep using them for other things
