Half an hour ago I found out that my Nanna's on the verge of death.

My parents had left me an answerphone message an hour or so before saying she was very ill and when I talked to them they were on their way over to Macclesfield. They told me there wasn't anything I could do. No point in jumping on a train: the minister had already been called, she'd be gone by the time I got there.

I don't really know how I feel; numb mostly I guess. I'm not even sure posting this is wise; I just thought some of you should know.

(I had a similar experience with my first grandparent who died, and I saw her strapped up in a hospital bed the evening before, and that's the only image of her I remember now, so it's probably good that you won't see her just before)

I'm not sure its true to say there's no point in going back up North though - possibly you might want to be with your family at a time like this, and they could well want you around.

Thank you so, so much for all your kind words. Amazingly, she made it through Saturday and is now in a stable condition. Not sure what's going to happen next, but I will keep you informed.
