I don’t know myself tbh, I do like all the loanwords we ended up with

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 18:39 (seven years ago)

the harrying of the north was a pretty rough move, but you can't deny William was pretty bad-ass.

calzino, Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:02 (seven years ago)

One set of aristos running a hostile takeover on another set, I dunno

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:14 (seven years ago)

Presumably in the later 11th century there was a bunch of pundits who were pleased that we were part of a European union tho

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:16 (seven years ago)

can never keep straight in my head which set of ye done worse on us tbh

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:31 (seven years ago)

It all comes down to how you feel about the past nine and a half centuries of English history. Personally, I have mixed feelings.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

iirc it was the Normans that started the colonization process D

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:36 (seven years ago)

Bloody Normans coming here, taking our jobs...

2018 has to be better (snoball), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:48 (seven years ago)

spiny norman clming here taking our hogs

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:49 (seven years ago)

nv i think that may be correct

but to align myself too tightly with that view would be to accept that some sections of anglo-saxons have suffered alongside us imo

so im taking knee for the team yunnerstand

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:51 (seven years ago)

Normans v. Saxons. Bloody immigrants.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:52 (seven years ago)

formorian OG

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 19:55 (seven years ago)

It is pretty funny that the Norman Conquest did give us hundreds of years of England claiming the throne of France, like, lol

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:07 (seven years ago)

Like did they ever officially stop claiming it

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:07 (seven years ago)

....and ireland and Scotland..

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:08 (seven years ago)

Those aren’t as funny :(

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:09 (seven years ago)

Given that the Normans was only semi-domesticated vikings whose cousins had already given Ireland the business it's just one bunch of shitheads after another. There's no real nation states back then so I haven't got a clue who'd count as an immigrant anyway, it's not like England or Ireland had been single unified kingdoms for v long by the time the conquest happened

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)

Scotland invited the Normans in btw.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:11 (seven years ago)

Yeah silby I think there was a point when some king or queen formally renounced their claim to France but it's late on, 16th century at the very earliesy

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)

What is it with Scotland and inviting your future oppressors to stick it to you?

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:13 (seven years ago)

That reminds me, Scotland are in the World Cup Finals this year.

2018 has to be better (snoball), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:15 (seven years ago)

Hey, no Normans, no Robert the Bruce.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:15 (seven years ago)

It was George III who dropped the claim to the throne of France, ten years after it had become a republic lol

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:17 (seven years ago)

Well the gig was rather less attractive at that pt I suppose

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:18 (seven years ago)

just one bunch of shitheads after another

would that tim pat coogan had left it at that tbh

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:25 (seven years ago)

Reminds me I've still not gone to the castle ruins, which given they are at the top of my road and I've lived here 18 months is a bit lazy of me

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:29 (seven years ago)

one thing I've learnt since moving here is that the Battle of Hastings wasn't actually in Hastings but at a village a few miles north that has the imaginative name of Battle.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 June 2018 20:39 (seven years ago)

the only reason anybody cares about the norman conquest is that there haven't been any since. and that tapestry is shit.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:17 (seven years ago)

nah the tapestry rules. I visited it last fall. the bit where William (i think) shoots a guy in the face with an arrow, that’s class.

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:26 (seven years ago)

I like the story of William's all alcohol diet plan after the teasing of Philip I of France, who enquired if he was pregnant. But he was onto something cos apparently Red Wine blocks the development of fat cells, or at least I like to tell myself that.

calzino, Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)

although I don't it was ever confirmed if he was pissed when he fell off his horse and died.

calzino, Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:31 (seven years ago)

"the only reason anybody cares about the norman conquest is that there haven't been any since."

whoah! Don't forget the Norman Conquest in S Italy!

calzino, Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

i'd be pissed if i fell off my horse and died

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

swoosh

valorous wokelord (silby), Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

Drinks, shoots (a guy in the face with an arrow) and leaves (on a horse that he then falls off of and dies).

2018 has to be better (snoball), Saturday, 2 June 2018 21:37 (seven years ago)

Chemistry teacher at my secondary school was called Norman Conquest.

lol not really what i was referring to, i meant the kinda fake nature of all the linguistic stuff meant to underpin it. fun read tho!

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)

oh the shadow tongue? that is badass imo

imago, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:26 (seven years ago)

whenever ppl talk abt the actions of like 100 years ago not being relevant now I think of https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/8424904/People-with-Norman-names-wealthier-than-other-Britons.html

ogmor, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 09:34 (seven years ago)

fuck me, the occult Norman deep state seems have quietly spanned the centuries without causing many ripples.

calzino, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 11:47 (seven years ago)

land ownership is the real conspiracy

ogmor, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 11:49 (seven years ago)

it is quite blindingly obvious, but also sort of invisible and sometimes people look at you funny if you start ranting about the landed gentry.

calzino, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 11:52 (seven years ago)

Yep. I wrote a lyric with the line "a thousand years of tenancy" many years back, it's the not-so-secret history of the islands

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 11:52 (seven years ago)

by other metrics like looking at the surnames of ppl who go eton there is more social mobility than you might think, but without land reform, you get what we've got. worst in scotland iirc

ogmor, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 12:02 (seven years ago)

Obviously events like the industrial revolution shook things up to some extent but

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 12:25 (seven years ago)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Conquest_(footballer)

StanM, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 12:34 (seven years ago)

that name reminds me of the Nairn Across Britain cameraman Bob Sleigh. Parents with humour tumours, saddling their children with comical names are obviously oblivious to the importance of one's name.

calzino, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 12:49 (seven years ago)

Classique, sans contredit.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 15:10 (seven years ago)

normanative determinism

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

Karius whisper (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 19:13 (seven years ago)

Dr Eleanor Janega is one of best medieval historian presenters, this is far superior to any of the shite you get on the bbc these days.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 18:26 (nine months ago)

The Dan Snow guy who's the main presenter for that channel has a terribly annoying voice.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 18:47 (nine months ago)

Not all that's annoying about 7 foot tall posh Nepo twat.

Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 18:49 (nine months ago)

yeah, I fucking hate that cunt. The fucking grandson of British political elites should be barred from doing history programs.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 18:53 (nine months ago)

I'm just highlighting Dr Eleanor because some people might discern against by her association, but no she's actually brilliant at doing this stuff and has a sharp mind.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 18:56 (nine months ago)

all the history Dans are fucking horrible except for my beloved Cruikshank

Eleanor Janega is great and that's why she's not getting the BBC money

i got bao-yu babe (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 30 April 2025 21:25 (nine months ago)

this is enjoyable thx
