Antipodean London Scene

Early on in my time in London nearly ALL my time was spent spending vast amounts of money in the folowing pubs/clubs . My impression is that they are seen as attracting the lowset form of denominator and should be avoided at all costs by Londoners...but I had so much fun.

Antipodean pubs from memory
The Walkabout
The Red back
The Church
The Dog-(Willesden Green)

Clubs
Frantic/Fevah/Farenhite/Pickle
U4ria (at the Catptain Cook Pub)
Sunny Side UP W1
Hard Sunday (cricklewood)

Been to any of the above? ANy thoughts from non Antipodeans.

Define antipodean, please...

the spotted dog in Willesden Green? Possibly the worst pub I've ever been in, especially on a Sunday lunchtime, I thought I was going to be sucked under the mire that was supposed to be the carpet.

I've never been to the Church , but everyone I know who's been has said "never again"

I probably spelt in wrong it means Australian, New Zealand or South African. The Spotted Dog has er chram.... maybe character ok youre right its a grubby dark shit hole but i loved it.

The Church Ha yeah its not something to do every Sunday, I imagine it would give ILXors nightmares

line up for hours to get into a old warehouse with sawdust floor, buy beer in a six pack with ice and plastic bag, everyone gets smashed, music plays, people get their clothes off and dance. I miss London.

the queue to get in the Redback is always so long!

redback beer was in fact the best beer I tasted in Australia, but was slightly perturbed to find a slice of lemom floating in it, my first reaction was "hold on, this head is not frothy, it's kind of solid?????"

Hooray, much amusement was caused on my first visit to Nottingham where we arranged to meet people in a Walkabout bar. We kept saying "you flaymin' galarrr" each time we took a sip of beer. This is the best thing about Antipodian bars! I do not think there are any others! There are pictures of crocs too.

And wot of South Efrikan bars like SPRINGBOK? I haf never been to one of them and I ph34r it mightily. Co-worker Mike wd like to go cos he likes some dodgy S.A lagxx0r but this is not to my liking.

in fairness to the Spotted Dog, I will say that the garden in summer was a nicxe place to drink. I never ventured into the attached nightclub Sindrome but my flatmate did, in fact he got his nose broken there trying to stop an aussie and a kiwi who were leathering each other.

chris (chris), Monday, 4 November 2002 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Kill. Kill them all. Although seeing an Afrikaans chick trying to bawl out a coat-check guy and getting laughed at absolutely made my evening, the last time I braved one. (ie was forced to by some Zimbos I was with.)

I think I went to the Springbok once but I can't remember why. Please do not bother. The dodgy S.A lagXor is nice, but not worth the effort.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 4 November 2002 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam, are all Zimbos really aggressive and cocky, or was it just the ones I met while in Thailand?

chris (chris), Monday, 4 November 2002 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My old flatmate was from SA, and would not go anywhere her fellow antipodeans congregated. Ever. On principle.

My feeling is you go the thousands of miles to experience a new culture and surroundings. It took me five years to meet Americans I had things in common with but I did get to avoid the ones I had no choice about at home.

yeah, nalini is australian and shes the same, she couldnt understand why people just hung out together en masse, wanted to live with english people and not get involved in the oz scene.

(for australians it must be strange in london with so many over here - she bumped into someone from school here on the street)

kiwi: i totally understand you missing london!! i too spent some years there as an aussie antipodean - i was determined not to do the whole typical thing and never shared a dwelling with another antipodean until i was forced to share with a saffa just cos the flat was too good to pass up - but i have no bad reports on that.

frantic, sunnyside up and the walkabout (along with the others you mention) were frequented by me... but my experince of the church was a one off, it frightened and shocked the hell out of me, but remains bright in my mind as one of the most outrageous experiences i had in old blighty!! ha ha

i think it all comes down to the hellish abandon that takes over your soul when you live in someone elses country?

jayne (jayne), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If I encountered another Australian whilst in the UK I would run a screaming mile. Australians in the UK = a bunch of total wankers. With a very small number of exceptions.
