I swear I hit this POS half a dozen times with my hand, against my skin, against the tabletop, and it picked itself up and flew away every time.Finally I caught it and rolled it like a steamroller. Sounded like stepping on dung beetles. It's completely wrecked now, but still twitching.
What the hell is this thing, an airborne tick?

So this was a deer fly apparently. "Once the insect reaches its target, it sheds its wings and starts burrowing through the fur" - iow it really was an airborne tick!!
