The Godfather is the boring but correct pick

omar little, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

uh actually every one of the winners is a deserved pick. What a splendid crop!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:07 (seven years ago)

if you people haven't seen The Emigrants/The New Land yet on Criterion, what the fuck are you waiting for?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:07 (seven years ago)

Probably The Godfather, but I guess I should finally watch Cabaret, huh?

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:07 (seven years ago)

Sounder is lovely.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:08 (seven years ago)

Eric, my boy, you should have lopped off The Godfather to make things innaresting.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

I'm not a massive fan of Deliverance, but yes, this is a well-above-average slate.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

I'd rank them:

The Emigrants
The Godfather
Cabaret
Sounder
Deliverance

...and I'm voting for The Emigrants. About time a foreign film won one of these things.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:14 (seven years ago)

All but one of these is a period piece, no?

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:16 (seven years ago)

depends on your views of backwoods Southern pederasts.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:17 (seven years ago)

Probably The Godfather, but I guess I should finally watch Cabaret, huh?

it's nothing special. good though

Cabaret

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:40 (seven years ago)

Cabaret is far more than good and awfully close to special.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:03 (seven years ago)

I most recently saw it in a rep screening 3-4 years ago, and that's where Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography makes it much more immersive than on TV (ditto Willis and The Godfather).

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:25 (seven years ago)

Armond's recovered some ground with these pieces for Out: https://www.out.com/armond-white/2017/4/05/armond-white-what-cabaret-taught-us-about-tolerance

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:31 (seven years ago)

maybe too harsh on Cabaret - i've seen it a lot, particularly the beer garden scene, which my middle school history teacher played for us at least half a dozen times. but i watched the whole thing for the first time in a while last week and wasn't totally into it, mostly because i was foolishly expecting All That Jazz style Bob Fosse. the cinematography is great and did feel very intimate - that's an apartment you can get lost in.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:35 (seven years ago)

was thinking of rewatching Cabaret recently actually, not sure why

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:36 (seven years ago)

He's more awkward as a director on Cabaret but give'em a break.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:38 (seven years ago)

the last shot is great, has always stuck in my head

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:44 (seven years ago)

the original Broadway version was much less bisexual

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:55 (seven years ago)

so, more gay

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:56 (seven years ago)

My instinct is to vote Cabaret too, imo it's one of the absolute best adaptations of musical theatre into proper cinema

VAR VAR Rasputin (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:57 (seven years ago)

i.e. much more filmic than just shooting a stage show

VAR VAR Rasputin (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:58 (seven years ago)

Godfather

Slippage (Ross), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:00 (seven years ago)

I saw the film version of Cabaret first and, as such, the stage version has always felt disappointingly humdrum.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:07 (seven years ago)

The Isherwood stand-in was straight in the B'way original.

Isherwood objected to Liza as Sally Bowles, because she's supposed to be a lousy performer, not a belter with chops. Well, no one would watch that version. And it's easily justified as portraying how Sally regards her talent.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)

Most of the stage versions I've seen since have gone with a less-than-stellar vocal talent. They've also retroactively added in the songs that were written for the movie.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 22:30 (seven years ago)

Fuck that's a good year. What's The Emigrants about?

new land blew my mind when i saw it
emigrants is also good but a bit more a chore imo

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 23:17 (seven years ago)

Cabaret felt more revelatory than The Godfather the first time I saw it, so voted for that. Have not seen The Emigrants, guess I should.

best for-lang film this year was Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, just sayin'

my fave Hollywood film of '72 is possibly Ulzana's Raid

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:06 (seven years ago)

just watched Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, it was as great as I remembered

voted for Cabaret

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:09 (seven years ago)

today's confession: i still haven't seen any of these! looking forward to the poll results for this reason. i hear this "god father" is the horse to beat though!

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:11 (seven years ago)

xp have to say though, I also just watched The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, also from '72, and it was fantastic

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:12 (seven years ago)

Third in nominations: The Poseidon Adventure with 8

I don't find much awkward about Fosse's direction of Cabaret; it's less flamboyantly obnoxious than All That Jazz.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:17 (seven years ago)

(he won best director over Coppola)

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:21 (seven years ago)

Poseidon is my favorite of the films I've seen from this year.

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:24 (seven years ago)

best for-lang film this year was Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, just sayin'

Had Sweden been able to submit Bergman's Cries and Whispers by the deadline that year it may have been a different story.

As it turned out, C&W was nominated for regular BP in '73... (and won for Best Cinematography)

Josefa, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:24 (seven years ago)

The Emigrants/The New Land had a brief network-TV series version with a cast including Bonnie Bedelia and Kurt Russell.

Deliverance did not.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:30 (seven years ago)

The Heartbreak Kid probably my pick from the also-rans

Josefa, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:39 (seven years ago)

if we're talking about all the best films from 1972 we should also include Aguirre and Solaris

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

we're not because they might as well not exist to Oscar

Murmur of the Heart got a screenplay nomination, tho

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)

hey you were the one who brought it up
:)

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:57 (seven years ago)

Morbs likes changing the grounds of arguments.

Discreet Charm won Best Foreign Film; this category's about what did get in, and this lineup is astronomically better than what we saw before and for many years afterward.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 June 2018 01:58 (seven years ago)

I've still never seen either of the Troell films. Deliverance is okay--the banjo scene's great (especially how kid turns away resentfully after the song). I saw Sounder the year it came out, when I was 11, and haven't seen it since. I know Kael likes it (she had a thing for Martin Ritt). Not big on Caberet. I'll vote for The Godfather, but I'm kind of tired of it. Would cast a more enthusiastic vote for The Candidate or The Heartbreak Kid, maybe even Cisco Pike.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 June 2018 02:03 (seven years ago)

"the kid"--just checked, and he was 16 at the time.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 June 2018 02:04 (seven years ago)

Not having seen 3/5 of the nominees, I can't say for sure that The Heartbreak Kid and Discreet Charm both deserved to be in the top 5, but I like both a lot more than I remember liking Deliverance, at least.

Aguirre is my actual favourite film from '72, though I don't think that was released in the U.S. for a few years later.

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Thursday, 14 June 2018 02:32 (seven years ago)

I mean, if we're listing actual favorites here ...

01. The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany)
02. Cries and Whispers (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden)
03. OffOn (Scott Bartlett, USA)
04. Cabaret (Bob Fosse, USA)
05. Pink Flamingos (John Waters, USA)
06. Winter Soldier (Winterbank collective, USA)
07. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Luis Buñuel, France)
08. The Merchant of Four Seasons (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany)
09. The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, USA)
10. Heat (Paul Morrissey, USA)

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 June 2018 03:03 (seven years ago)

great list!

also recently watched The Merchant of Four Seasons, it's fascinating to see Hanna Schygulla in all of these different roles

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 03:21 (seven years ago)

…between Love Is Colder Than Death (one of the best debut films of all time), Gods of the Plague, Beware of the Holy Whore, Merchant of Four Seasons, The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant. Effie Briest, The Marriage of Maria Braun...

Dan S, Thursday, 14 June 2018 04:01 (seven years ago)

re Sally Bowles in Cabaret, I like the way Jill Haworth sings in the original cast album - and she was a Brit as Sally Bowles is really supposed to be - but let's face it, Liza owns the role in the film. Part of why she's so effective is that she comes across partially as a creature of the 1970s, and there is an undercurrent running through the Cabaret film in which 1930s "decadence"/libertinism is paralleled with that of the 1970s. There's a bit of '70s glam in it.

Judi Dench played Sally Bowles in late '60s London, I wonder if for a second she was considered for the film role.

Josefa, Thursday, 14 June 2018 04:04 (seven years ago)

xp just watched The Third Generation (1979) the other night, really great, Hanna Schygulla's second to last film with Fassbinder.

flappy bird, Thursday, 14 June 2018 04:41 (seven years ago)

and i've never heard of the last one she did with him

flappy bird, Thursday, 14 June 2018 04:43 (seven years ago)

it's strangely nearly 'played straight' for RWF

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 05:34 (seven years ago)

Always was fascinated growing up that Cabaret managed to win 8 awards and then miss out on best picture. It was the Gravity/Mad Max: Fury Road of its time.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 June 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)

per wiki:

(Producer Cy) Feuer had cast Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey (reprising his stage role) long before Fosse was attached to the project. Fosse was given the option of using Grey as Master of Ceremonies or walking away from the production. Fosse hired Michael York as Sally Bowles's openly bisexual love interest.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:19 (seven years ago)

Poseidon is my favorite of the films I've seen from this year.
― noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino)

Missed this, but high five, I guess.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:36 (seven years ago)

xp -- did Fosse want York as the MC or something? It's not clear that those last 2 sentences are related.

a shomin-geki poster with some horror elements (WilliamC), Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:42 (seven years ago)

No... Fosse apparently wanted anyone but Grey as the MC, but eventually was given an ultimatum by the producer. Grey suggested Fosse might've wanted to play the role himself.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)

I've never seen Sounder but the novel is up there with Where The Red Ferns Grow on the childhood trauma scale.

louise ck (milo z), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

Finally watched Cabaret this afternoon. Am I being nitpicky by wishing it were gayer?

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:43 (seven years ago)

tbf everything in the past should have been gayer

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:44 (seven years ago)

Cary Grant movies before 1940 are gay enough. Otherwise, y'all need more Franklin Pangborn in your lives.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)

For Cabaret's network TV debut, the "I screw Maximilian" dialogue exchange was completely excised.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:54 (seven years ago)
