kiwi just mentioned that there is a fundie gp hatemailing him who consider JP2 to be an "antipope" (which is surely fairly hardcore, in terms of catholic orthodoxy)

from a safe distance — i'm a convinced materialist atheist, of bohemian anglican-heretic upbringing — i have always been intrigued by the concept of the "antipope", and i guess want irresponsibly to poke at this particular hornet's nest

Sounds interesting. To my understanding, the Antipope was mostly a Middle Ages phenom, when there was little order beyond (at best) a localized level, so you had claims and counter-claims to being the Pope. The last Antipope was sometime in the 15th century (the first was St. Hippolytus in the 4th century), and JPII was from all apparent purposes canonically elected, so I'm curious as to what the fundi gp's argument is, if any. I suspect it's probably more of a 'we don't like him, so let's call him an Antipope!' kind of thing.

one year passes...
I heard at school about how JPII is actually an ANTIPOWP and the real Pope is Pope Gregory **. Apparently the Angel Gabriel and the Holy Spirit elected Pope Gregory **. there was something about how some recent Pope was murdered and replaced by an identical ANTIPOWP whom THEY found in a Roman brothel.
