Leaving the phone off to dart into nature or just to avoid those million bullshit notifications you got via text or whatever...classic or dud? Harder when you got family or a work phone obviously but what do ya think?

I say classic. So much distraction nowadays

I did this for an evening last night. Well I took an unscheduled detour off the beaten track for about 10 miles and had forgotten to take my phone. Had a couple of pints outside a nice dog-friendly pub I chanced upon and then headed back. My autistic co-traveller didn't have any meltdowns and pretty much loved the whole trip. my partner was really pissed off, and on the verge of calling for search parties when we got back.

I admire anyone who disengages, as long as you don't make a big production out of it. A friend of mine deactivated Facebook for a few months and did it the right way: a quick, short announcement and he was gone. Some people, though, it just seems like an attention-seeking thing (like the family that turned it into a documentary a few years ago).

Yeah being uncontactable is great, as long as you offer a brief civil warning to anybody who might wonder where you've gone.

I do this with regularity. Temporary off-grid is uber-classic. I will be going out camping/backpacking for four days starting tomorrow morning. It is lovely in the mountains right now, mosquitos, dust, and wildfires notwithstanding.

To me, trying to stay off-grid permanently means no electricity but what you generate yourself, no running water but what you pump yourself, heating by wood fire (most likely), etc. Which may not have destroyed Abe Lincoln, but seems ott when 'the grid' asks so little of you in return. Rural electrification has been a great civilizing force in the world imo.

Tbh I can get something of this effect just by leaving my phone over the other side of the room, that's pretty classic.

Facebook delete for me was awesome - after 10 years, download the folder, delete account, swippppp gone. No tear-stained farewells. A few people asked.

Completely off the grid, dud. I'd get too bored. Selectively taking breaks from some sites/apps at a time is good though.
