Because the maximum people in India do use a form of Indian English as a lingua franca, particularly for things like business / customer service, there has been a need to teach and assess Indian English formally as a separate strand of language, particularly for spoken interaction in a commercial context. I have an Indian English test in my portfolio!

(I never thought of most of these as having much to do with Hindi tbh as opposed to just being Indian English, in some cases preserved Victorian English. My Tamil and Malayali family use nearly all if them too.)

"Do the needful" doesn't belong here.

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 27 July 2018 12:01 (six years ago)

In fact, "Do the needful" and "First class" are pure Alan Partridge - whatever it is Alan Partridge does, slighly dated banter?

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 27 July 2018 12:05 (six years ago)

Thought about just calling the thread Indian English S/D or putting it in the title but figured Hinglish would be easier to search. Maybe we should ask mod to add.

Two of my favourite features of IA are the use of "actually" and "itself" in ways that I can't completely put my finger on, but are different to UK or US English. We would normally only use "actually" at the start of a sentence if we were correcting a previous sentence, but that doesn't seem to be the case in IA. And I love sentences like "FIVE key road bridges in #Mumbai - Vikhroli, Reay Road, Byculla, Gokhale Bridge and Carnac Bridge -will be opened for traffic this year itself." There's a lot about IA that reminds me of Hiberno-English. (For similar reasons, obvs.)
