Joe Pera Talks with You is the first new show I’ve really liked in at least a year.

― Chris L, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 01:15 (one month ago) Permalink

that show rules. it's somehow funny and gentle and comforting and weird all at the same time. very unlike the other adult swim shows

― na (NA), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 02:16 (one month ago) Permalink

It’s very funny and has a tremendous amount of heart and integrity. I guess it goes to show adult swim is still willing to do something radically different, other than give a show to any woman.

― Chris L, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 07:48 (one month ago) Permalink

OK I just finished it last night and was not expecting nor was I prepared for the turn in the last episode.

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:13 (one month ago) Permalink

I guess saying what major recent arthouse picture it reminded me of might constitute a spoiler so I'll just say I hope it gets picked up for another season.

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:23 (one month ago) Permalink

I like it a lot - it reminds me of my partner's hometown in western Ontario.

There's a weird tension to it, too - you expect every scene to end with some cheap gag to undercut the earnestness, but it never comes. Or if it does, the gag itself is just as earnest.

― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 25 June 2018 11:32 (one month ago) Permalink

Yes, the tone is very carefully managed, as is the writing/design of "Joe Pera," the character

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:45 (one month ago) Permalink

Yeah - I don't want to look at his other stuff on YouTube in case he's acting out of character and it spoils the effect.

devvvine, Thursday, 2 August 2018 10:51 (seven years ago)

Still no word on a second season?

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 2 August 2018 11:21 (seven years ago)

not that i can find, seems like it's got good enough press coverage to warrant it.

hope this is made officially available in the uk somehow so i'm not just boring people about something they can't watch.

devvvine, Thursday, 2 August 2018 11:30 (seven years ago)

I am so grateful to you for flagging this show! I just watched the first episode, and was hooked instantly. It's insane how effective it is at making you care so much about a character inside 11 minutes!

watched the whole season twice so far and got my bro and sis on it. so many great moments.

i would avoid, a couple standup routines were on point but most of the old stuff was lame. he really honed this character through the years.

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 6 August 2018 20:58 (seven years ago)

i'm guessing church announcements will win, probably deservedly. i think any of them aside from the last couple are a good choice - i like those too but i prefer the self-contained ones to the plot-focused ones.

I had no idea this was a thing! I always try talking this dude up to people and always forget his name (to the extent that I scanned this thread title like seven times before I finally realized where I knew the name). He's just become 'that twentysomething guy who acts like he's in his late seventies' at this point. Will def check this out.

And considering the licensing for a song like that would normally wipe out a show's entire season budget, I'm guessing that Townshend let it go for peanuts (as he did with Louis CK/"Who Are You" after he watched a clip).

This show was so lovely

Voting is very difficult but I think I will go with Breakfast, as its final line is the best final line of any episode in TV history

imago, Saturday, 8 September 2018 18:55 (six years ago)

Although the other O'Malley-written episode, Fall Drive, pushes it very close and actually I won't vote yet until I've seen them both again

imago, Saturday, 8 September 2018 18:56 (six years ago)

voted "shows you how to dance" but this is basically impossible

Clay, Saturday, 8 September 2018 20:44 (six years ago)

Leaning towards fall drive... but also leaning towards the other 8 episodes as well.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Saturday, 8 September 2018 23:43 (six years ago)

I love the tension and release when he finally [spoiler lol] says what he wants for breakfast.

There are several legit beautiful moments in the fall drive episode - the photos, the decaying pumpkin, the waterfall...

I grew up in the upper peninsula during my teenage years and it is so unbelievably spot-on that there were moments when I was watching it with my wife where I would uncontrollably lose it and she thought something was wrong with me. he captured the entire vibe of living up there that it felt like I was being teleported back to those years.

So that new Jeffrey Dahmer series on Netflix. It’s a little uncanny.

There’s no regional connection between the two as far as I know and I’ve never seen interview footage of Dahmer, but it’s like they found a guy who looks like Joe Pera and told him to “do Joe Pera”. Or Pera’s thing was quietly “do Jeffrey Dahmer” the whole time.

If Netflix reads this — they don’t have to do another serial killer show. I have another idea. You know the women who used to appear in the Big Buck Hunter game? They’re all older now, and I’ve reached out to them, and I’ve got them signed on to do a film interpretation of Hamlet. If Netflix reads this, I hope they know that we could do it at a fraction of the price of Dahmer.

What a strange headline, "Adult Swim Show-Runner", not like "Adult Swim Star" or "Joe Pera" or whatever.

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 10 October 2022 16:29 (two years ago)

yeah that article is wrong on a number of levels: those weren't "stand-up shows," that was the two day screening of every episode of the show at Bell House. He had the UP teacher onstage with him at the start of S3, seemed like a nice guy.

That was a great experience btw, lots of shop talk and fun being in a crowd of Pera obsessives who clapped at every title card.

Saw him this past Friday. The music playing over the PA as people were getting seated included the MC5 and the New York Dolls. There were two openers, one of whom was Ryan Dunn who did the music for the show. He was really fun and engaging. The next opener was comedian, and longtime Pera collaborator, Dan Licata (he played the DJ in the "Baba O'Riley" episode) who was decidedly hacky and mediocre. Joe came on, and his entrance music was the Jam's "In The City," which was a pleasant surprise. Joe did a LOT of interacting with the audience, and it wasn't the usual crowd work type of stuff, either. He would ask the audience a question, and then asked people to respond "one at a time" -- which they did. Then he asked us to vote on, for instance, if a squirrel could carry an entire pita chip by itself. The ending of the show was like a slowly deflating balloon, though. I saw Tig Notaro do something similar, where there's a bit sort-of being worked up to, and the performer just kind of riffs hoping they'll hit upon something funny enough to end on. I dunno, maybe Joe was working out half-written material or something -- he brought Ryan and Dan (who was funnier in this bit than in his opening set) back out for the last 10 minutes or so. But overall, a solid and hilarious show. I had never heard Joe swear or talk about sex, so that was weirdly jarring.

I appreciate his enthusiasm. Learning about the ways the gases can be channelled through the house was educational for me.

I don't want to ruin the mood, but I do have an important point to make. The tile work there is less than aesthetically pleasing.

Perhaps Eric could make another video explaining the reasons why the tile was set like that. There may be a very good engineering or architectural reason, and – though my wife hates to hear it – that's sometimes more important than how something looks.

The dating column was great to losing virginity section was awesome. Early section? Ehhhh he brings the audience in on the joke of the bit rather then leaning hard on it, though that lean is definitely essential to allow those moments to shine

H.P, Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:21 (one year ago)

Has his posture gotten more extreme lately? It's ironically not very relaxing and even menacing -- after 5 minutes, I had to switch to Pera's old "zero fucks" character video to calm down!

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:54 (one year ago)

Surely he’s got something propping up his shirt from the back, otherwise the man needs to calm down for his health!

H.P, Sunday, 8 October 2023 07:44 (one year ago)

well how much calmer can this man get? can't imagine another comedian able to close on "if you haven't fallen asleep yet, I wish you good night"

anyway, I loved the whole thing, maybe some parts were awkward or didn't quite work but I also think he's doing something on stage which hasn't really been done before. btw he does break character around 47:50 :)

who was the guy at the top of the balcony they kept cutting to? was that his dad?

Pretty sure that was the doorman who bonked everyone on the head on the way in. And yeah, he totally broke when talking about his female fans freezing their partners to death. Adorable.

Loved this. A little shocking when he went blue for a few minutes there but the impact of the bit was earned by the years of well-maintained sedation.
