thread title cribbed from Raymond C., if ppl hate it feel free to delete or rename or whatever

anyway here's something that sucks to start the month off

Where's the tax returns?

("Where's Wallace, String?")

Groove(box) Denied (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 1 October 2018 13:33 (six years ago)

Wonder how widespread that situation in Brooklyn is and how long it would take to reform once brought to light.
Really hoping it is going to be looked at now. &it's not going to be putting people off voting for the party at a time that everybody who can vote Dem should be being encouraged to. Reminds me of Labour 2 years ago where people were being excluded from the party by a stagnant inner party at a crucial time.

Stevolende, Monday, 1 October 2018 13:54 (six years ago)

this was linked in the previous thread. long story short, Kavanaugh very obviously perjured himself, a lot

question - if Dems get the house back and the Speaker position, they can just take Nunes off of the Intelligence committee, right?

Yeah.

They do.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:59 (six years ago)

I don't understand how media considers the renegotiation of NAFTA some sort of win for Trump? Thing is almost the same as it used to be and dude campaigned on pulling away from it altogether.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:01 (six years ago)

It's like the bull took a shit in the china shop and exited without causing damage and everyone was happy despite all the shit

Evan, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:03 (six years ago)

I don’t know the details of the Canada side of the deal yet, but iirc trump was pivoting to boasting about how great the new name of it will be, and how bad “nafta” is

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:04 (six years ago)

That's probably why he changed the deal. Reportedly he wanted to rename it USMC in honor of the Marine Corp, because he is such a patriot, but I guess it is now USMCA?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:07 (six years ago)

The win is that the deal starts with the US letters.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:09 (six years ago)

America first!

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:14 (six years ago)

John Oliver pointed out the farcical idea of Kavanaugh pere having a tradition of keeping Calendars to relate these old family stories over Xmas from. & the tradition being all of 4 years old at the oldest.
Oh & Kavanaugh sr being sat behind his son in the courtroom. So the idea of bnostalgia for this perfect time when his dad was till around is a little odd to say the least.

Stevolende, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:15 (six years ago)

Anyway, I think congress still needs to ratify the deal if I understand and that will most probably after the midterms so who knows what happens to USMike D over the next 2-3 months.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:20 (six years ago)

from the press conference the other day:

REPORTER: But are you going to notify Congress you’re pulling out of NAFTA.

TRUMP: What we’re probably going to do is call it the “USMC,” like the United States Marine Corps, which I love. General [John] Kelly likes it even more. Where is General Kelly? He likes that. USMC. Which would be US, Mexico, Canada. But it will probably or possibly be just USM. It will be United States and Mexico.

the USMC. the United States Mexico Canada. great name

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:28 (six years ago)

what's great about it is that the name lets everyone know exactly which countries are involved. not like that pesky North American free trade agreement, an enigma wrapped in a hot dog

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:29 (six years ago)

One thing for sure, Guatemala will never join the USMC.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:30 (six years ago)

Would he still be the chair of the committee with a party change?

― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal

No, no. The Republican would become the ranking member.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:36 (six years ago)

why can't we just call it the United States Act

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:37 (six years ago)

full mental crackpot

shrek and han solo kinda dress the same (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:38 (six years ago)

I'm sure he traded Chapter 19 for the name.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:38 (six years ago)

Thing is almost the same as it used to be and dude campaigned on pulling away from it altogether.

If the goal was to end NAFTA, it's a failure for Trump. If the goal was to threaten to pull away in order to extract concessions from Canada, it's less of a failure.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:40 (six years ago)

Trump doesn't have goals, he has feelings

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:42 (six years ago)

Dairy market seems to be the only concessions and as I said in the Canadian thread, it looks like the opening will be quite lesser than the one initially planned in the TPP. Steel and aluminium still an unknown.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:43 (six years ago)

Patent protection for biologics and copyright extension both seem significant too.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:45 (six years ago)

But yeah, we're basically going over the same points on both threads.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:47 (six years ago)

"biologics" is such a freaky word

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:11 (six years ago)

If the goal was to end NAFTA, it's a failure for Trump.

Ah, but if it is renamed USMC, then NAFTA has disappeared. Voila!

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 1 October 2018 16:16 (six years ago)

So he can tell supporters he “repealed NAFTA” in advance of the midterms. Lame

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:19 (six years ago)

lmao they're not even trying to make this look like a real investigation

“I thought it was going to be an investigation,” a Yale classmate of Brett Kavanaugh and Deborah Ramirez said, of the F.B.I.’s renewed inquiry. “But instead it seems it’s just an alibi for Republicans to vote for Kavanaugh.” https://t.co/H24YpATyAD

— The New Yorker (@NewYorker) October 1, 2018

frogbs, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:20 (six years ago)

xxxxpost Patent protection for health care products and copyright extension are significant, but they don't seem significant to Trudeau cause really they were barely discussed. That these things weren't significant to Trudeau is another debate in the Canadian thread yeah and I agree with you that these lost might be tough to swallow. The big five things Trudeau cared about were: sunset clause, chapter 19, cars, steel/aluminium and dairy. Also, Mexico is still in the deal which is a big plus for both Mexico and Canada. Steel/aluminium seems to be the major concession so far, by virtue of not being resolved.

Anyway, the US are the US, almost ten times the population and economy of Canada, that the status quo was extensively preserved can't be a win for Trump, who promised so much more about the 'bad deal' that was NAFTA.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:23 (six years ago)

I hope AMLO refuses to support any deal with Mexico that doesn’t include mutual right to live and work permanently in the other country. Partly because I want to move to Mexico.

If the Dems win both houses in November is there going to be an investigation and an investigation into the previous one. Or is the utter transparency of this being fake gong to speak for itself

They supplemented this article with a picture of an old Yale yearbook showing Kavanaugh’s grandfather. Apparently Kav didn’t bust his butt to get in, but had the benefit of being a legacy admission.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:02 (six years ago)

he was a legacy: His grandfather, Everett Edward Kavanaugh, also went to Yale for undergrad, as this yearbook shows.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:07 (six years ago)

So Trump just went on about having seen some unnamed Democratic Senator in compromising situations and seemed to be threatening to reveal it if this person keeps going after Kavanaugh.

I cannot wait until one week from today, when we get to find out exactly how much of his own money pharma scumbag Bob Hugin threw down the sewer trying to unseat Bob Menendez, who I freely admit is a crook but who is not going anywhere.
