VOTE!

I hope that you will all be at the polls tomorrow! (unless you've voted already)

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 4 November 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote with my feet, man. (Seriously speaking -- yus, vote away. I always do.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 November 2002 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(my email sub to the nation just came through "why november 5th matters" — my first thought was why the hell do US progressives care abt guy fawkes?!)

anyway you guys get out there and prove me right and pinefox wrong!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

[mark s has a bet with the pinefox that a huge pumpkin-headed dragon will win surprise control of the senate]

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

pinefox thinks it will only win hohum control

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Help me out here. what are they voting on?

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Whether xXx is great fun or just stupid.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

[X] xXx is great fun
[ ] xXx is just stupid

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 17 but I want to vote. One more year!

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Do kids in America ever fake ID to vote instead of drink?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

But...but...but stupid fun is some of the greatest!

Seriously, to all U.S. posters who don't live in the District of Columbia: If I as a DC resident must be subject to the whims of Congress, do me a favor and vote in some decent people. Honestly, some of the assclowns the states have sent us in the past...

;^}

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

(j.lu that face belongs on the goatee thread)

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

To be honest, I was hoping this thread was going to contain a statesmanlike era-defining address.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

j.lu yr emoticon actually looks like lincoln!

tho he's missing something:

=|;^}

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I get the day off tomorrow just to vote, so I would have to be even lazier than I already am if I didn't go out there and vote. Plus, I must have a hand in making the dumb lackey Dick weep bitter tears of defeat.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

All the Minnesotans better go and vote for Fritz.

Although if you believe in karma, watch Florida. Part of unpicking the mess and fallout from Indecision 2000 must surely involve booting Jeb Bush the hell out of office.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

We can only hope...

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

We have a MONORAIL vote. yum. I'm about to open my ballot... I love living in a state where you can vote by mail in every election, although it is using my last stamp, argh.

Our Senate vote is great, though. The choice is the Democrat or a write in. ;)

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

We have a MONORAIL vote.

Hey, Shelbyville doesn't have a monorail.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

haha the monorail opponents actually tried to use MARGE SIMPSON in their ads!!

monorailllll!

MONORAILLLLLL!

MONORAILLLLLL!

Mono... D'oh!

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"Do kids in America ever fake ID to vote instead of drink? "

no, i think it's much more complicated to register for voting. I had to bring in my birth certificate and someother stuff. You don't just show up with an ID at the poll, they send you a registration card.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to vote because I get to go back to my old elementary school (where the voting is), and see all the old pictures in the lobby of my and all my friends from the 80s.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

paul krugman on why you should vote

maura (maura), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

can it all go pear-shaped like last time?

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Note to republicans: all your candidates are going to win in landslides. no need to waste your time voting today.

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I voted.
I was rather surprised by a friend this morning who said he never voted. He always struck me as an activist. And I rather surprised him by saying I always did.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

'Our Senate vote is great, though. The choice is the Democrat or a write in. ;) ' says lyra.

This happened in Barking and Dagenham Council elections a few years ago (i. e. for more than one election), IIRR.

What state do you live/vote in?

Re: another point raised: I thought that there was a move to get at least Representatives for D. C. a few years ago. Did this not come to anything?

Tim Bateman, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

P. S. No write-in in the U. K., obviously. You voted for the Labour Party candidates or, um, er, nobody.

Tim Bateman, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

well, you don;t have to be an activist to vote.

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

well, you don't have to be an activist to vote...

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I already voted. I have to admit I felt slightly cheated, because I didn't get to vote on anything cool like a monorail.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

lyra doesn't mention that bellevue, which is directly across lake washington, is fiercely republican. yet another way in which seattle is maybe the most segregated city in the US.

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

DC has a "shadow" Senator and Representative in Congress -- they are not allowed to vote on legislation, but do perform other Congressional duties, including sitting on various committees.

DC residents do vote in a mayor and a city council. However, a Congressional committee on DC has veto power over these officials, and some of the members (the "assclowns" I complained about above) have been known to try to impose things on DC that they wouldn't try to pull on their home constituents.

For the past 20 or 30 years there's been a movement to try to gain statehood, or at least voting representation in Congress for DC. Thus far the official response has been that the language of the Constitution would not permit any change from Congressional rule.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Won't vote until tonight -- can't get to my polling place in the morning before work, but shouldn't be a problem at all after. California is patting itself on the back for not having Florida election procedures, but it would.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Nor do you have to vote to be an activist.

, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

do we mean "activist" as in someone who likes to dress up as a butterfly and wave giant puppets around?

ch. (synkro), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

One of the women at the polling site asked me if this was the first time I voted. I wonder how young she thinks I am. (Just turned 37.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to register.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

well, you don't have to be an activist to vote...
I know. I don't know why he was so surprised I was voting. If anything, I was surprised that he was surprised...

Nor do you have to vote to be an activist.
True. Though it seems silly to me that someone concerned with political activism would throw his/her vote away. I understand that you can work outside the system to invoke change, but I also think you should first try to work within it.

I understand that just because someone seems to be an activist, they do not have any more obligation to vote than other people do.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

plus it's so easy you might as well... if you hate the system or something then just enter a blank vote.

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that was shit.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Working within the system has rarely been known to change the system itself. If a person truly does not think that representative democracy, as a system of government, is the right or proper form, I would tend to think that it would be exceedingly hypocritical for them to vote for a representative in the American elections. Most people do "throw away" that which they deem trash. I consciously choose not to vote for government officials for this very reason. Nor, of course, would I call myself an activist, for the exact reason that ch pointed out.

, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but if one does not support the current system...

Creating a new system from scratch would take a very long time. I am not saying it can't be done, but in the meantime it seems we should also try to work with the current system to perhaps change it to be slightly better...? This seems more likely to me than something miraculous happening involving the appearance of a totally new government in place of the current one. Otherwise, there is no change. By not voting, you are agreeing to and supporting whatever/whoever everyone else votes into place.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

You are all more than welcome to come hang out in Canada until this all blows over.

Miss Laura, Thursday, 7 November 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen G (Queeng), Thursday, 7 November 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)
