Seriously though how great is this show?

(i say that knowing it’s a buzzkill batsignal & ilx dudez will say its not THAT great etc)

BUT IT’S SO GOOD

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 19:28 (six years ago)

I am up to episode 7 or 8 & am loving how dark it goes! i am unfamiliar with the comics but it is a great departure from the goofy/corny-dark of Riverdale

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 19:33 (six years ago)

michelle gomez, as ever, ftw

^this is unworthy stuff tbh^ as well to project that people only like it cos ~reasons~ and just give up on unironically liking or disliking anything. we can maybe agree not do this?

shipka has been a superstar waiting to happen since mad men and most of the rest of the cast is bang on

looks/feels great, almost stranger things good

story is a bit rushed and the parts fairly clunk into place, but hey i stopped watching mad men cos i couldnt take the ridiculously forced narrative so yknow

darkness and danger is good

sjw stuff- a lot of it is far too on the nose to be anything but clumsy but its hiding it in plain sight at least

decent effort

lie back and think of englund (darraghmac), Monday, 29 October 2018 20:22 (six years ago)

I watched the first episode and I didn't not like it but god the tone was so weird to me, also the constant gauzy vignetting is inexplicable

hail Satan obvi, maybe I'll watch some more

a good comedy writer & i agree, tonally it is a touch flat & could do with laughs

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 20:43 (six years ago)

yeah id agree with that

aunts obv are great

lie back and think of englund (darraghmac), Monday, 29 October 2018 20:44 (six years ago)

like if had more of a Buffy-ish tone

but i love the visuals soooo much. and yeah the cast is great, miranda otto & the other aunt whose irl name i always forget. enjoying ambrose too

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 20:47 (six years ago)

yeah they said "Dark Baptism" about 90 times in just the first episode and I was like please take it down just a single notch

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 29 October 2018 20:51 (six years ago)

I especially enjoy the cinematography of the witch vision. I don’t know if it’s done in camera or in post-production... but it sort of looks of like its a bunch of glidecam stuff shot through a prism.

rb (soda), Monday, 29 October 2018 21:06 (six years ago)

It looks almost fisheye crossed with vaseline smear.

Mentioned on the Netflix thread, but for all the bits I liked, the first episode was a tonal wreck. You get Sabrina - who is a great sort of naif - and her witchy family - who are sort of broad/sitcom. Then you get the evil witch, who is like Disney villain ott. And yet, she stabs people in the neck with scissors and stuff, which is pretty gruesome, esp. for a character who is not scary, and the rest of the episode's tone is super moody and dark, too. It's basically like Buffy without much of a sense of humor or wit (which, yeah, this needs!). And the boyfriend and basically every kid but Sabrina are pretty meh as actors. Or at least merely standard, which is a bummer, because it does have high production values and a compelling look and I love that it jumps right into SATAN. Though I wonder if it will later give Satan and his Dark Lord worshippers much more in the way of motivation than just ... existing as witches. Like, can you be in league with the devil and not be outright evil? What does Satan get out of this arrangement?

And for the record, I am prepared to watch more, but my wife and daughter are like ehh.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:16 (six years ago)

I had this problem with Riverdale! I never got past the pilot - everyone was a drip.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:38 (six years ago)

aw the dumbness is the fun of Riverdale for me

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 21:44 (six years ago)

Good to know! I do wanna try it again. I watched six seasons of Gossip Girl, I can do dumb.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:50 (six years ago)

All the witchy people I follow seem to like it.

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 29 October 2018 21:56 (six years ago)

I’m on ep 7 and am still into this show. I didn’t think I’d like the one-off dream demon ep but it was great because it was its own story with some tension and character expansion and also slightly forwarded the show’s arc. That’s all I ask of tv tbh.

But what I also want to see aside from some decent comedy writing is MORE ACTUAL MAGIC!! Not to beat the Buffy comparison into the ground, but at least Buffy was constantly kicking demon ass with her super powers - and when she wasn’t kicking demon ass she was cracking jokes! I keep thinking maybe I’m not paying enough attention and am somehow missing all the magic stuff, ha.

somehow seemed totally on point that the boring boyfriend had a lined denim jacket (only boring smooth boys have this jacket)

omg for real

Like, can you be in league with the devil and not be outright evil? What does Satan get out of this arrangement?

These are questions I’ve been thinking they’ll get to, and more on the nature of dark lord evil vs the nature of human evil. I’d like this to be cleverly done, but...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 29 October 2018 23:28 (six years ago)

it only has to beat al pacinos aybsantee layyynnndloid so that should be doable

rrrobyn said in another thread it could benefit from

The guy writing it writes the comic. It's a while since I read it, and I only read the first story arc (which is broadly the same as here) but there are way, way more jokes in the TV show.

Just finished the series and the second half us much stronger than the first even if - curse of the Netflix original programming - the final episode feels like one too far and a bit tacked on.

It's all about Jeff Out Of Coupling and Dawn Out Of The Office for me, and of course the ever-delightful Michelle Gomez.

low-key bronson pinchot is hella creepy, he’s great

harvey is sooooo boring but as mr veg pointed out maybe his (spoiler ) in ep 9 will go some way to deepening/enhancing his character somewhat

or its lined denim jackets all the way down

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 05:11 (six years ago)

Michelle Gomez 4 ever tho, my god she’s the best

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 05:16 (six years ago)

The Grandmother and the 'cunning' or whatever was the only part I didn't like. It felt really off to me - like there was something racist about it, though I can't express it.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this. The clash of tones was surely the point - it's kind of like when people joke about how Casper died; takes the premise seriously, to see where it goes. You could do the same thing imagining Samantha from Bewitched meeting with Satan, killing people etc.

Praise Satan. On ep 7, and I'm starting to tire of Sabrina. Does she have to be such a witch buzzkill? (And yes I get wanting Sabrina to be more evil is missing the point a bit lol).

I love the Aunties, Ambrose, and Michelle Gomez of course. I wish Sabrina's girlfriends had more to do other than fill in the diversity quota, and have backstories that amount to more than "they are descendants of important townspeople who hated each other, and also inherited the traits of those ancestors."

Roz, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 07:46 (six years ago)

watched the finale last night - suitably exciting!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:34 (six years ago)

"You're playing with life and death and you don't even know the basics!"

Lol Ambrose is me watching this show.

Roz, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 17:14 (six years ago)

Yeah Mr Veg and I were basically yelling at Sabrina through the final few episodes. Goddamn teens!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 21:44 (six years ago)

I watched the pilot, it was great! Definitely on board. I actually found the earnestness and lack of jokes quite refreshing!

...then afterwards I went back and rewatched the Riverdale pilot - it was also ok! Is it worth the effort of watching the rest?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 23:02 (six years ago)

By the way - a quick, high recommendation for The Book Group if any Michelle Gomez (and cringe dramedy) fans itt haven't seen it.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 23:05 (six years ago)

Riverdale is dopey fun, totally worth it imo

It's okay if you're a teenager and don't know much, but when they're 'in vino veritas carpe deum sic semper tyrranis' it's kind of weak.

Beth Broderick as one of the 2 aunts.
Think it's been a cartoon since then too.
Was it a sibling publication to Archie originally or something?

it feels like a mid-teen & older show. any younger & it seems like it could be nightmare city

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 1 November 2018 22:47 (six years ago)

This show is so weird re. parentage.

Sabrina, her aunts, Harvey, Roz, Susie and Prudence are all motherless (as of episode 6). And Michelle Gomez is only a mother of demons. In fact, there’s not a single non-toxic mother on the show. I imagine this is part of the plan, but it’s sort of noteable.

Digging this show so far. After some brilliant music cues in the first couple of episodes ("Hurdy Gurdy Man" works xtway better than the on-the-nose "Season of the Witch" would have), they seemed to vanish from subsequent episodes...until episode seven. Perfect.

hope this isn't spoilers but very faintly in the background of the penultimate episode they play skeeter davis' "the end of the world" while they're sitting in the diner which is such a great song and it's such an amazing music cue but it's really blink (or however you blink with your ears) and you miss it.
