...but I will anyway. Is it possible to order a pizza in this damn town (London), right now? Specifically North London. Specifically Finchley Road/Hampstead area? It is 1.10am. Everywhere seems to be closed. I would appreciate telephone numbers.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's bad news, Kicks.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the UK sometimes. I'm waiting maybe fifteen minutes more for a positive answer, and I'll take anything, it doesn't have to be pizza. I'm hungry. If I get no good response I'm gonna have to eat cereal. This is no joke. Rice Krispies, to be exact. That's all there is here.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes you do like filling this board with trivia. That's what it's for.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Frozen pizzas are really cheap. Keeping a stash in the freezer is a good idea for emergencies. (If you take them out of their boxes you can fit more in.)

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Great suggestion, Toraneko. Except, how the hell does that help me right now?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, this is rubbish. As far as I know the only place near me that is still open is a lap-dancing club (and I don't think they have food). Fellow Londoners, doesn't this sitaution bug you?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you telling me that there are no 24-hour Supermarkets in London? Go and buy some frozen pizzas and heat one up!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a garage near me. That's all. Yeah, I might get a fucking frozen lasagne, but no good pizzas. Or a Pot Noodle for God's sake. The nearest supermarkets to me are poncey Waitrose (closes at 9pm) and Sainsbury's in the O2 centre (closes midnight). Nothing is open. This is reasonably central London (or it's far from suburbia at least), and nothing is open!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's too posh. Move to an area where there is a more recent immigrant community around.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

This is one thing that always surprises me about London, you just can't get food delivered after midnight or so. In Nottingham, there's no problem getting a pizza at 3 in the morning, or maybe its just the parts of london I tend to stay in (bermonsey, lewisham etc).

Steve.n., Tuesday, 5 November 2002 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

We make enough money during the day to not boither working at night. What do you want - a 24 hr city? (ies New licencing laws being mooted). Move to Noo Yawk.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Glasgow is better at 24 hours shops than London too.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that's cos london is bad, bad, bad.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

so did you eat pizza?
i had your rice krispies for breakfast this morning.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just ordered a pizza. If you were here I'd share it with you.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I wish I'd been awake to see this last night, because, yes, I do know of places! I lived in that 'Hood for three years. Pizza Go-Go in Kilburn will deliver at all times of the day or night. Their Vegetarian Hot is one of the best British delivery pizzas I've ever had. Don't have a telephone number on hand any more, unfortunately, but they are in the phone book.

Failing that, isn't the Sainsburys in the O2 centre open 24 hours, or is that only at the weekends? I've been spoiled by the Angel Sainsburys.

kate, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate is obv. making this up as everything in Britain closes down at 5.30pm.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the barnet museum is great. it opens, like, 2 days a week, from 1.30pm to 3pm or something

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived in West Hampstead for three years and never met an authentic British person. Canadian, Australian, South African, Pakistani, Ethiopian, yes. English? No. Therefore, West Hampstead != Britain, and excused from ridiculous closing hours.

kate, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

So English = British?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck off, I'm sick. I never met a Scot or a Welshperson either. I did meet an Irishman, but he was from the Republic of, if you want to get bloody pedantic.

kate, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate to 24 Hr Shop Clerk: "ARE YOU AUTHENTICALLY BRITISH?"
24 Hr Shop Clerk: "GET OUT OF MY SHOP"

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

pizza go-go are the bees knees, they deliver very very late and there's one in the Stow too.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of being British is being aware of these things and preparing for them. I quite like that pubs shut at 11.30, it means I can get home okay.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My local Tesco (Barking) is open 24 hours, except for an hour or two around 7 or 9am or some such on Sunday morning.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What I did in the end is wander the streets in the belief that I would find somewhere I didn't realise existed. There was nothing. Then I thought about the garage, and remembered that you can't go in at night. You have to speak to the guy through the window, and I didn't fancy that. So I went to a shop that's open 24 hours (but there's no good food). Their freezer was was empty except for a solitary Goodfella's deep-pan pizza. I'm not fussed about deep-pan, and I don't like Goodfella's, but it had to do. Luckily it was a vegetarian one. So that's what I had, and I was drunk so it didn't matter much.

Anyway, thanks to Kate, for alerting me to Pizza go-go. I'll be using them a lot in future I think.

Sainsbury's in the O2 centre is only open 24 hours on Fridays, I think. It used to be Fridays and Saturdays.
