My preferred xmas presents have been books for almost my entire life.

This year in a shock change, I fancy some Carolina Reaper Honey Hot Sauce that I tasted at a friends house the other week and was just incredible. Easily pleased ha.

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:13 (six years ago)

Ethiopians always had it in October didn't they?
Wonder where it was before the Northern European Xians adapted tehir midwinter feats to be it. Was it the same daye elsewhere?

a new camera would be great.
Remastered reissue of Clock DVA's Thirst.
Ability to conjure up an extra week between now and then and whatever otyher extra time I need before deadlines at will.

Trump & May's heads on sticks. An end to Conservative parties and the right. Though someti8mes does help to have a nasty venal 'them' to be an 'us' against? Reducing them to a nominal entity would be so much handier though.

Ethiopians celebrate Christmas in January bc of Julian calendar, I don't know if anyone celebrates Christmas in October

ogmor, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 10:26 (six years ago)

Do they know it's Christmas?

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 10:28 (six years ago)

Well if people keep reminding them they're bound to. Especially if a bunch of rockstars put together a naff hit single.
A friend said tehre was still a lotof produce coming out of Ethiopia at the time of the famine and she saw produce of Ethiopia on fruit & veg at the time.

Somebody on a course i was on who was from Ethiopia was saying something about a tradition of Christ being born on I think the 8th of October.

Just looked up where the 25th of December came from and apparently in th e3rd century Hyppolytus of Rome extrapolated it from Jesus being conceived on the spring equinox.
Otherwise it seems to have been an adaptation of an existing feast. Saturnalia i Rome or whatever Northern European midwinter celebration.

Bob Gedolf doesn't give a flying fuck about Ethiopians any more, he just wants a People's Vote for christmas this year! I'm getting a puppy myself.

calzino, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 10:53 (six years ago)

Indeed, happily no-one gives a flying fuck about Bob Geldof any more too, so all is well and deep and crisp and even.

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 10:58 (six years ago)

I think as with many famines there was a political element, with the main opposition to the communist DERG and the famine both being concentrated in the north in Tigray

I wonder if I will ever stop responding to adorable puppers like the kind of aunt that kinda scares her nieces and nephews with her overzealousness. I sure hope not.
