Anyone else seen this? Some great shots/sequences; defined in part by its absence of formal rigor, which I couldn't entirely get with.

I think it's coming here soon. the Garry Winogrand doc looks really good but it's only screening here three times, in a revival slot (??). hopefully there will be a proper release.

That's exactly what I came to post about...If you can overlook a minute of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"--what a terrible, terrible soundtrack choice (three other songs, all fine)--the Winogrand documentary is quite good. Also very timely.

Penny Lane's Hail Satan? was disappointing. First of all, it had a trace of Michael Moore about it--something self-satisfied about the Satanists, a bit of aren't-we-clever? about them--and I think a rating of 6.0 is my limit for anything that feels like Michael Moore. Secondly, the film tries hard to present the Satanists as good people. They have their seven tenets, and they're the most sensible, clear-headed principles you'll ever hear.

I don't want domesticated Satanists. I want them to be scary and threatening, maybe a little deranged--blood sacrifices, drony chanting, the whole nine yards. What's the point of even having Satanists if they're like a Kiwanis club?

Everyone go see RECORDER: THE MARION STOKES PROJECT if you get a chance, I can't recommend it highly enough. A fantastic, understated documentary about a fascinating & amazing woman.
I saw the Other Music doc shortly after and it was pretty good, a must see if you ever went to OM even as a tourist. Pretty much what you'd expect. Too many unnecessary holds on people crying/about to cry.

I put out a feature documentary this year:

You can stream it online for free here.
SARASOTA HALF IN DREAM is an experimental documentary about dead turtles, crab swarms, decaying tennis courts, and microscopic histories. The filmmakers shot their explorations into the abandoned golf courses, factories, and resorts of Sarasota, Florida and spoke to local youths who are using them for new and strange purposes. What would the Surrealists and Situationists think of a suburban, subtropical tourist town? What goes on in a storage unit in the dead of night? What is the afterlife of a decommissioned train car? What ghosts haunt a ruined hotel? What is the life cycle of a city? When will waters wash it all away?
Hope it's not too gauche to post my own film, but I think y'all would dig it.

Someone else can start a 2020 thread if you think it's necessary...Saw Making Waves today, a history of sound design in the movies. Good, not great--I felt myself shutting down during the 10-15 minute Star Wars segment. Almost no one I'd rather listen to on anything to do with film than Walter Murch, though, and he talks a lot here. I liked his description of the killing-Sollozzo scene in The Godfather, where sound is so crucial: "the murder of Michael's dream of having nothing to do with his family." (Even if, strictly speaking, that dream is already over before the murder.) Good segment on the airport scene in Nashville, too.
