Coint & Plick 2018 - ILX's best video games of the year - CAMPAIGN and VOTE here!

What are the best games of 2018? In ILX's twelfth (?!) Coint & Plick poll, ballots work similar to Pazz & Jop; you have 100 points to allocate, and may give as few as 1 or as many as 30 points to any game. Ballots are due in a little over three weeks (Tuesday, April 2) and the rollout will begin shortly after.

There are three ways to vote!

a) Make a copy of this spreadsheet, fill it out, and e-mail me the spreadsheet (ps2ilxⓐgmail.com)
b) Use the spreadsheet (above) and enter the "copy/paste" line into this Google Form.
c) Manually make your ballot, spacing your number of points and your game with " /// " (e.g. 30 /// Minesweeper), each game on a new line, and e-mail it to me (ps2ilxⓐgmail.com)

You can find the complete list of titles in the second tab of the spreadsheet. PLEASE ONLY VOTE FOR GAMES YOU PLAYED ON THAT PLATFORM. As much as I want to vote for Yakuza 0, I just played it late on PS4, not on PC. Having a game place top 5 multiple years in a row because it was slowly rolled out on multiple platforms and people forgot they voted for it the year before was bad!

Please also include, if you choose, your disappointment of 2018 and your non-2018 game of 2018, as well as your top 3 platforms of 2018.

Write-ins are fine, but I'll look at you like a stern and disappointed authority figure. Make a post here so I know you'll vote, too, even if you are gonna be a last-minute lemmy, because I wanna know there's gonna be more than like 8 of you.

the only campaigning i will do is to remind everyone about Yoku's Island Express. it only takes like 6 hours to complete so you still have time to play it

I'm trying to figure out the best/lolziest way to include MPQ into my ballot.

I think I only played two games from last year, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire and Pathfinder: Kingmaker, so I don't know if I should vote.

Good games to consider, you mean? Or platformers? I’ve played a bit of yoku (the demo) but it’s more like pinball than a platformer, right? Maybe I didn’t play far enough into it.

the four mordy picked out are good enough that people will still be talking about them a decade from now ... yoku as more of an aficionado's pick but still. All four are on my ballot.

Celeste is much more rage quit inducing than Hollow Knight (except for the very, very last parts of Hollow Knight which are Celeste-like in the demands they place upon the player)

celeste will hurt you but if you quit soon enough or hang on long enough it is a thing to love

I quit Celeste because it was too challenging, but not in rage, which sort of captures how great a game it is.

This has happened to me in a lot of games recently! There's the "ending"-- which is usually p.easy to get to--followed by tons more content that I end up playing until I hit the wall beyond which my reflexes/ability/dedication won't allow me to proceed, so I just kind of stop playing. I'm not criticizing games for this, though! It's a lot better than the alternative, which is finishing a game you love and wishing you had more of it (e.g. Steamworld Dig 1 & 2)

just getting to the top of the mountain is 'beating' but yeah there's way more stuff after that

I have a feeling I'd vote for GRIS but it's not on PS4 and I don't like playing on my laptop.

the best 2D platformer and best game i played that came out last year is La-Mulana 2. it's a very open metroidvania similar in vastness to Hollow Knight, except centred around very very elaborate puzzles. it's one of the best games i've ever played and took me something like 50 hours to complete

Actually, it's a not a terrible idea to do anniversary polls, if someone is willing to do the legwork. (Not me, cough)

I'm in a movie club that does this all the time, going back 10 years, 20 years, etc.

Considering the noise I made about doing a HOF, I am totally willing to do this.

I'll be putting mine in at the very last minute, same as I always do! Wanted to play as much of Yoku's Island Express as possible before I finalised my ballot.

sorry, i'll sit this out because the only 2018 game i played was yakuza 6 and i'd rather not skew the results with 30 points for a single title (plus 0 was much better anyway but i already voted for that last year, same for edf5)

Well I had no compunction giving 30 points to one game, 25 to another, and then 6 total points between three other games.

yeah I did like 30 / five 12s / two 5s, everyone throwing their hobbyhorse game 30 points is a lot of the fun of these results

i've been doing 15s 10s and 5s in some arrangement, there hasn't been a game i felt 20+ about at the time of voting either time i've done this

agreed, i don't regret skewing the 2017 ranking with the edf5 write-in but despite liking y6 well enough it's not 20+ point-worthy like y0 was imo.

if only i'd gotten around to playing monster hunter...

I started playing Two Point Hospital again after giving it up on it for months and I love it; strong recommend. If you haven’t played it in a while, you can now rename your doctors, which ofc has potential for endless awfulness.
