The New Pennsylvania Governor

The new Pennsylvania governor is the former Mayor of Philadelphia, Ed Rendell (Democrat). Although I don't like some of the things he did with the city unions, and he's a bit too chummy with business for me, I think this should be a good thing overall. He seems to be serious about increasing state funding for education, rather than having individual cities and communities try to fund their local systems primarily on the basis of local taxes.

Rendell's election was one of the few good things that came out of yesterday's election. He left Philadelphia in much better shape than it was when he was first elected mayor -- so much so that even John Street can't totally fuck it all up (though, bless Mayor Street's heart, he's giving it a go).

As for the Philly municipal unions, he was pretty much forced to take the position that he did to stave off the city going bankrupt. I think he was endorsed by just about every PA labor union (except the Philly municipal unions), so he's obviously not motivated by anti-union animus.

ive always gotten a really genial feeling from rendell. not saying he'll defo be a good governor, but anyone who sits in the crappy layperson's seats at phillies games is okay by me.

Rendell shouldn't be too bad. Maybe things are looking up for The Keystone State.

g, I'm from Philly. I do think that while he'll be a governor for all of Pennsylvania, as they say, he'll be especially good for Philadelphia, and I live here. So I feel pretty good about that. :)

I think he definitely improved things in center city, but not sure how much he did for the poorer neighborhoods of the city. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.

I have to admit I am ambivalent about the business thing. If businesses don't want to operate in your city, well, I guess you're kind of out of luck when you try to find people jobs.

Hopefully he won't be at the center of any sex scandals. He has a reputation for having trouble keeping his hands to himself when he's around young women.
