To really force a feeling of belonging, probably. Think of the whole Nicolas Cage obsession. Everyone that made pillow cases out of his face or whatever... I mean they obviously found it funny on some level but the whole exercise was just people competing with each other about how far they could take it for the reward of validation from a group made up of tons of people trying to do the same thing. Do they REALLY care about him that much? Bacon? Sriracha? Chuck Norris? It's about as shallow and needy and low effort as when you see people shouting Anchorman quotes at each other.
