i have had "friday night" stuck in my head for weeks

Only about 1/7 of this show worked for me but man that 1/7 killed

yeah it reminds me a lot of Key & Peele in that regard - K&P had a better hit rate but they both did the "take a goofy SNL-style comedy premises and dial it up five extra notches" sorta thing

I will say this show's good sketches nail the landing more often than K&P's good ones, which generally just petered out

one that i love that no one talks about is the faux-elvis guy trying to record his rock song who makes the mistake of telling his backing band to "just wing it"

of course after i post that, i see that sketch is listed in the ringer's "best tv moments of 2019 so far"

yeah that one was my fav sketch.

i also have a soft spot for the sketch where the ghost of sam richardson future screams at scrooge and recruits him into the skeleton war

i think the honk if you're horny/"friday night" sketch is perfect. after that my favorite is probably the overwhelming dark energy of the howie sketch. i have met that guy... many times

Speaking of the skeleton war, there's something very dril-ian about the Robinson persona often used in these sketches

i can see that. it has a similar absurdist ethos, scatalogical focus, and disregard for polite society.

for me this show is like the center of a venn diagram between mr. show and tim and eric. the great sketches are highly rewatchable

I've only seen CO'M in this and his series of videos aimed at Howard Schultz but he uh certainly makes a quick impression

His “perfect egg bite” scene from Joe Pera Talks to You is another all-timer

Also his appearances as the beast masturbator during the public access run of the Chris Gethard show

didn't realize he was the guy behind those "what kind of player pimp drives that" vines, but he's a unique talent.

i use the quiet flabbergasted "whaaaaat??" from loaded nachos in just about every meeting now

gotta say this is definitely a show that gets the most out of its guest stars. I'd imagine pretty much all of those sketches were written with someone in mind.

So it seems one of this show's best tricks is to suddenly reverse the peripheral "straight man" supporting/side characters into active participants in the silliness.

This show has some real good bits but I can 100% do without the lazy, post-Tim & Eric wacky edit stuff.

yeah I love this sort of thing, sketch comedy is inheritably predictable so I like that this show really isn't. though this is also sort of a Tim & Eric thing.

well that one felt like a series of ITYSL sketches more than any episode so far but also things actually happen

prob the best episode yet, I mean I gotta watch it again it was so crazy

saw this show described as "anti-Reddit" as in it's so unpredictable that you can't even bother to speculate about what's gonna happen next and every trope it uses is instantly subverted. only thing I can think of that reminds me of it is maybe seeing The Big Lebowski or Pulp Fiction for the first time

thought this one was kind of weak. nothing happened and there weren’t really any gutbusting moments

ok I completely didn't realise last week's was the finale?! i feel at a loose end now

same. was hoping for some kind of resolution. didn't need a perfect bow on everything – but was hoping for something more than whatever... that was!

i'm just wrapping this up now, i have enjoyed it. it does feel like a sketch show thinly disguised as a narrative show but i don't mind, lots of great weirdos.
also nice to see lou diamond philips again, haven't seen that dude in forever.

in retrospect I do find it interesting that the advance screenings didn't show the finale. maybe that's just because they didn't want to risk the big twists getting spoiled but I wondered if how E8 went was dependent on whether or not the show got picked up for another season. because the 7th episode felt like it should've been the finale but obviously the show is too weird to let that happen

I finally got around to watching Friendship and really liked it, much more than I was expecting. I was surprised by how many plot points it had in common with The Chair Company, but at 1hr 41m, it was a much tighter, focused experience.

I thought Friendship was kind of a dud

It had its moments but the writing felt a bit Robinson by numbers (probably because it wasn't written by him and Kanin)

Yeah the drug trip was the highlight for me. I thought the movie was funny but you do kind of have to grade it on a curve. I wonder if it would have been received differently if it was like a special feature-length ITYSL episode or something.

Also I love how he sets up these ominous scenes like the lady from the records dept where you think they’re on to him then “she told me to go home and take a shower”

or the shots of people sneaking onto the construction site in the dead of night which you think is going to be a major plot point only to find out it's a bunch of people racing RC trucks. but it becomes a major plot point because it causes Ron to snap and shove Jeff.

In a similar vein, all the Chekhov’s guns which never resolve - like the concussion thing which actually does pop up again but is completely ignored

(Which apparently people are using to theorize that all the lunacy is the result of Ron hitting his head one too may times) I dunno, I can’t ever imagine trying to elaborate grand theories to explain any of the ‘mysteries’ of this show

haha anyone thinking that there are hidden clues that will eventually tie it all together are like charlie brown kicking the football. i'm not a betting man but i'd be pretty comfortable wagering that season 2 of this show will just feature more and more threads spiraling off into more and more absurd directiones

yeah among other things the show is clearly satirizing the format of those kind of longform mystery/puzzlebox shows and the way that viewers are conditioned to engage with them

I think the head injury thing messes with the show's central premise, that yes Ron is nuts but these things actually are happening? Granted the supernatural elements introduced at the end may need to be explained away somehow. Though I suspect Lavator is right, shows like this don't often get *less* crazy in Season 2
