This is Important. I know we've had one day's worth of action, but it could be deceptive. I suggest everyone who's interested mails their complete list and we have it to look at for comedy value in future.

the pinefox, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1 M Utd
2 Leeds United
3 Liverpool
4 Arsenal

Best of the rest: Chelsea.

The rest? Dunno. I'm shit at predictions anyway. Will everyone tip Bolton to stay up now? Probably. Cardiff to win Division 2. Leeds for the UEFA. First division? Bratford. The rivalry's all on their side (they think they're competing with us) so I've got no problem with saying that their luck last season didn't always reflect the way they played.

Greg, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"M Utd"? I'm mental.

Greg, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, division 23 surely goes to west chestershire. leytonburg is going to win second in the first series of division eight, and of course queef is going to get the UFAEEAUA on the side of royal merseyfield. division six probably will go to stigwood, and stoneford is going to be swept at the last moment by whicky-do. but i could be wrong.

ethan, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd go with Greg's predictions. Hopefully Liverpool will be higher, but I doubt it...

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've changed to Ethan's predictions. Surely Barnsford are in with a chance in Division Right?

Greg, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm putting all my pounds sterling on whicky-do actually, their plaid-wearing forward kickerman must weigh at least 48 stone so they're sure to win the royal trophy.

ethan, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I admit I like the idea of Queef as a team name. But surely Ethan's predictions on the whole shows that he can only MAKE FUN. So we need to talk in turn about how many NASCAR racers will die from a combination of fiery engines and guzzling tobacco juice or something.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And this is the same E. Padgett who wants us to believe that he believes that hip-hop exists in Britain :). That country just isn't there anymore: even the non-league games are in the same meeja empire as the Simpsons (and, on balance, better for it). Nobody under 30 cares about or venerates the royal family anymore. It's a different world.

Man Utd for the title but closer than last season by far. Leeds will win a trophy but I cannot say offhand which one, though it could well be the UEFA Cup. No British club will win the Champions' League (actually, though I have nothing against MUFC per se, I don't think I could stand the "Fergie's farewell in his home city, shipyards blah blah" stuff if they get to the final in Glasgow). Leicester might not fully recover from today. Bolton might come to earth sooner rather than later. Bristol Rovers the team most likely to in the Third Division.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is fucking great, now everyone has to acknowledge my little pisstake before they get back to all the funny words and stuff. and yes, hiphop does exist in britain, i saw bob tha builda and mc thatcher popping shit about p-to-the-r-to-the-o-to-the- gressive ruralizm on bbc2's 106th and park the other day. it was quaintly fly.

Haven't made up my mind yet but I would guess something like

1 Man U
2 Liverpool
3Arsenal
4 Leeds<5>Sunderland, all depends whether or not Bowyer et al gets sent down. Not that I really care, as I'm just gutted that Berwick Rangers have lost the opening 3 matches of the season (and they were 10/3 favourites to win the league).

Billy Dods, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I reckon Derby and West Ham will get relegated.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have been out-Pinefoxed: *Middlesbrough*.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox is thorough. I'll just give a top-5

1. Man U. 2. Liverpool 3. Arsenal 4. Leeds United 5. Chelsea

10. Spurs. Again, new season, new hopes, another midtable position ;)

Omar, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox: we never did establish who won our little prediction comp last season, did we? It was Stevie T in 99-00, wasn't it? Lixi put EFC at 4th, bless her.

Anyway:

1 Manchester United 2 Leeds United 3 Arsenal 4 Chelsea 5 Liverpool 6 Sunderland 7 Ipswich Town 8 Fulham 9 Tottenham Hotspur 10 Southampton 11 Everton 12 Charlton Athletic 13 West Ham United 14 Newcastle United 15 Aston Villa 16 Bolton Wanderers 17 Derby County 18 Middlesbrough 19 Leicester City 20 Blackburn Rovers

One Cup goes to the North-East, the other to London. No Euro success for English clubs this year.

Michael Jones, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blackburn bottom? You're absolutely joking. Blackburn should finish top half really. They play better football than most of the mid-table rubbish in the Premiership at the moment.
