Granted I'm only like 13 hours into this thing but it's possibly one of the best comedic achievements of the 21st century

Worth looking for: the episode of The Best Show from a couple years back where Tim and Gregg take up about an hour of the show arguing over whether or not Tim actually saw the Tom Cruise remake of The Mummy.

I never really gave a shit about the Tim & Eric show but I am 100% on board with this as pure genius, Turkington hooking up with him was a godsend.
I'm on season 9.

feel like I'm doing a marathon to catch up but even then I can only watch like a handful of these in a row otherwise I will succumb to severe couchlock hypnosis

I think the guys using the mailbag to passive aggressively torment/spring surprises on each other is my favorite gag

I don't know how to explain this to you but the "Stump the Buff" segment where Tim nails Gregg on the Star Trek/San Francisco trivia question is just as dramatic as the scene in Breaking Bad where Hank figures out who Heisenberg is

Popcorn Classic is a really useful term for a certain kind of movie.

I thank u, sic, although I spent a long while watching a different, much less complete YT playlist (after starting on the even less complete playlist on that one website) so I just wanted to make sure no one else made my stupid mistake. I give this latest playlist five bags of popcorn and a hundred cups of soda.

The later seasons of Decker aren’t on youtube btw, but iirc they stop interacting directly with On Cinema episodes so it doesn’t stand out badly

(The two Ant-Man movies also don’t appear in the playlist, but do very much affect On Cinema video and twitter content )

a couple of my old acquaintances recently started a video game podcast. I listened to one episode and thought about On Cinema the whole time. one of the guys has probably played 20,000 hours of video games but has absolutely nothing insightful to say about them, it's so spot on that I've almost come to view Tim & Gregg as real people

like I think some of the people they have met not through only casting calls but just in real life, like I think Tim said he met Axiom at a Guitar Center for real

i agree with this, it's not black and white. i think manuel gets that he does a comedy show with tim and gregg, he probably even finds some or much of it funny. but i do think there's just something about who and how he is, and how he exists in the world, that is a perfect foil precisely because he's not on precisely the same comedic wavelength and almost seems indifferent to a lot of what is happening. if it wasn't for this element, the show would feel more like The Office or something and it wouldn't be anywhere near as funny. like it's almost a structural type of humor that exists in the collision of worlds between types of people who are just so different from each other and from tim and gregg

right I feel like they explicitly tell the actors not to match their energy or think too hard about what's actually going on, which is what made the Joey Patron character so funny, because he was the one guy who actually paid attention to how little sense they were making and called them out on it

even the relationship between Tim and Gregg is kinda like this. on a lot of sitcoms like say It's Always Sunny the main characters are all basically different versions of the same sort of person, because the same people are writing them all. but Tim and Gregg are nothing alike and care about none of the same things, other than being in front of a camera. their only real common trait is how inept they are at basically everything. hard to think of another show that has two very separate things going on like this

they’re both also selfish, cruel, have big egos, and crucially, will also inevitably drag anyone they come in contact with into ruin with them. tim can mask it better at first and is more aggro when the mask comes off but it’s a similar outcome for anyone unfortunate enough to get pulled into their orbit.

I've recommended Lee Chang-dong's Poetry to pretty everyone for over 15 years now - one of the greatest films I've seen this century by one of the world's greatest living filmmakers and my personal favorite among Korea's auteurs - and I've been especially vocal about it the past two weeks because of his visit to the NYFF to present his latest film, Possible Love, his first film in way too long. But it's especially sad and infuriating to watch now because of 1) the gang rape revelations out of Cornell and the people who covered it up - the film may be an indictment of the Korean patriarchy, but it applies universally - and 2) with Richie Rich now consuming both Paramount and Warner Bros. and exclusively making movies for meatheads, it's a sad reminder of how short-sighted the outcry was over Netflix's potential ownership because it's Netflix that's distributing Lee's latest film worldwide - if you want good art that actually confronts what's wrong with the world, that was the company to back.
