and say why if you can...

i saw LOTR, Jay & Bob Strike Back and Monsters Inc all very early in the year and they all still stand out as being probably the most downright ENTERTAINING movies of the century let alone the last 12 months (and say what you like about Episode 2 as well but it was superb as an audiovisual experience if nothing else)...i know they're not cerebral avant-garde flicks but i cant seem to remember any of those right now

blueski, Thursday, 7 November 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw donnie darko yesterday. i couldn't see what all the fuss was about. it's OK, but not a major movie. Best movie I've seen this year was probably Y Tu Mama Tambien, however I was in a horrid place mentally at the time, which was only compounded with the film's content. i will go and see it again under normal conditions.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

those two films are next on my list incidentally

blueski, Thursday, 7 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm going with J&SBSB too.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 7 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It has to be the Royal Tenenbaums, just for so many reasons. For a start, it totally wrongfoots you the first time you see it, because it's not really a comedy, yet some of the stuff is actually pant-wettingly funny ("But I'm gonna live!"). The soundtrack is great as well, the fact that every single scene is soundtracked perfectly, there's hardly a moment without music in the film. The suicide scene. The fact it has Owen Wilson in. The "You wanna talk some jive?" bit. Everything about it. Third best film ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some faves

* XxX
* Mr Deeds - poor winonna *sigh*
* Y Tu Mama Tambien
* The Eye
* Spiderman
* Crossroads

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the Royal Tenenbaums, I just forgot it came out this year.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all in some sort of timewarp!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm with dom and je1. although i have to qualify by saying that i'm consistently underwhelmed by almost every film i see.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen that one Melissa, what's it about? With that title it sounds like some sort of Back to the Future rip-off :)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite film I've seen this year is Ocean's Eleven, but I think it was actually released in the UK at the end of 2001 so maybe it doesn't count? Joint second place to the Royal Tenenbaums and Donnie Darko, fourth place to Sweet Sixteen.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Love The Royal Tenenbaums, DD, and Monsters Inc. but I saw all of them last year.

I can only think of Spirited Away as something that really moved me -- I think it will be one of my all time favorites. Bubba HoTep was entertaining. I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh, gotta be careful here as we all know films (esp. the ones i listed) all came out before last christmas in the states so count as last year for them

blueski, Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

A Walk To Remember
Crossroads
Queen of the Damned
Hablo Con Ella
Slap Her, She's French

I think almost everything except 24HPP I've seen this year has been fantastic.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my problem is that when it comes to films I'm not very discerning, I just love going to the cinema. Even when a film is bad, like Swimfan, it still made me laugh.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

haha EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (not). i know that my favourite film of 2002 will be LotR: The Two Towers before it even comes out! but i v much liked the royal tenenbaums and ocean's eleven.

katie (katie), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Royal Tenenbaums
Donnie Darko
Punch Drunk Love
Red Dragon

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

pasolini's salo hehe.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Risking my ILX skin being forcibly ripped off:

"The PowerPuff Girls Movie", if only for the line, 'We've been under the thumb of humanity for far too long. Now it's time to OPPOSE THAT THUMB!' - spoken by monkey. Oh yeah.

"Donnie Darko" v good but not a complete stunnah.

I don't go to the cinema very often. But that may change because the Evening Standard are giving away Odeon tickets with their magazine tonight.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Powerpuff Girls movie was brilliant!

24 Hour Party People was alright

it has actually been a pretty good year for the major motion picture

blueski, Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Risking my ILX skin being forcibly ripped off: "The PowerPuff Girls Movie"

b-but, ILX is all for the PPG.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

(except the movie)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

and it _still_ hasn't opened in ireland. grrr.

angela (angela), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and BAD COMPANY.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can only think of Spirited Away as something that really moved me -- I think it will be one of my all time favorites.

I'll have to go with this now -- the second viewing was even stronger than the first. It is definitely a film that grows in impact.

But that said and all:

i know that my favourite film of 2002 will be LotR: The Two Towers before it even comes out!

Yes and clearly yes. ;-) Got the new 'making of' book Katie?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Royal Tenenbaums
Minority Report

I also saw the Magdalene Sisters last night, which was quite good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

punch drunk love. i forsee this edging out the two towers, slightly, though i would never admit this to my friends for fear of losing all nerd credibility.

amy (amy), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh no i don't have that Ned! however i am going to bugging the living bejesus out of flatmates when the extended version is out next week, and when TT comes out next month, so books might be overkill... though christmas is coming... ;)

ooh and amy posted before me. HURRAH EMBRACE YOUR NERDY TT LOVE! :):):)

katie (katie), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cockettes.

Wow, other than Spirited Away, I really can't think of anything! I'm sure I'm forgetting some stunning flick. Really looking forward to the new Todd Haynes and Brian De Palma movies, though.

Disappointing: Auto Focus. God, it looked like crap.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Really looking forward to the new Todd Haynes

The more I learn about it the more I'm intrigued. But I almost feel like I should watch Magnificent Obsession first or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

been thinking that too ned - i haven't seen a sirk film for years and feel like that would probably provide some tonal background going in. on the other hand, it might also be great to go in cold and see how a contemporary melodrama sits in the context of nothing but shiny blockbusters for months on end (me not you).

jones (actual), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny, I just borrowed Imitation of Life and All That Heaven Allows from a friend so I can be, like, totally psyched for Far From Heaven.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

things I haven't seen yet that I hope are better than most of what I have seen: minority report, lucia y el sexo, spirited away, insomnia, goldmember, red dragon, 10, changing lanes, die another day, LOTR2

signs and monsters inc. probably my favourites so far this year

zebedee, Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now, Tadpole and 24 Hour Party People, but I'm waiting on Far From Heaven and the new Harry Potter.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(yay arthur! IOL is great, iirc)

if the tenebaums picture doesn't count i haven't seen anything i loved yet this year. boo hiss

jones (actual), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked quite a few movies this year (Minority Report, Insomnia, Red Dragon, many more), but I'm still confident that the Two Towers or Harry Potter 2 will be my favorite this year as the prequels were my two favorite movies of last year.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

sex and lucia. it tore me

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha woo that's what happens when you forget yrslef for a sec. twat! nah, i liked it ok?)

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

*cough cough* YEAH IT TORE ME A NEW ASSHEWL D00D i am gruff rilly yes?

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny, I just borrowed Imitation of Life and All That Heaven Allows from a friend so I can be, like, totally psyched for Far From Heaven.

Ah, they are both great! I've seen both way too many times...All that Heaven Allows is probably the one Haynes is borrowing from plotline-wise, but I think I prefer Imitation of Life for sheer melodrama.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Watched All That Heaven Allows last night--yes, it was indeed great! I'm surprised I'd never seen it before. It seems Fassbinder borrowed a lot from it for Fox and His Friends, too. Imitation of Life I have seen, but it's been soooo long.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away. Incredible movie. I love everything Mizaki does. The man is a genius.

Juan (Juan), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

'mulholland drive' without a doubt because it messes with my mind and that's alright by me.

angelo (angelo), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

24 Hour Party People. But then, I haven't seen that Michael Moore flick yet.

Dickon Edwards (Dickon Edwards), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Dogtown and Z-Boys so far (if it is 2002)
I never skated but this film made me wish I had

the combination of the music and visuals
the attitude the personalities
fabulous film!

(maybe Green was right???)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Volcano High!, a S. Korean film The Matrix X Harry Potter..

soooooo goood, m.mm.

nellie (minna), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Dogtown
Tenenbaums
Amelie
Walk On Water
Here Comes Your Man

JM, Friday, 8 November 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Loser.
The New Guy.
Eight Mile.
Here Comes Your Man.
Brotherhood Of The Wolf.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 8 November 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Amelie?? Now you're taking the piss with judgment and release dates simultaneously.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 8 November 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Amelie is brilliant but SO (literally) last year

actually this is a bit like when choosing your albums/singles of the year - do you ignore release dates and just pick the films you saw for the first time this year? i guess not if its something old, perhaps films from 2001 are okay tho - i only saw Harry Potter this year for example (not that i thought it was THAT great)

blueski, Friday, 8 November 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, despite the traditional and increasingly barren summer drought, this has been a pretty good year for films, I think. I liked Mulholland Dr., Royal Tenenbaums, Spider-Man, Talk to Her, Donnie Darko and Morvern Callar. I'm looking forward to seeing The Hours.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 8 November 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Morvern Callar was dull, and stretching, Jeremiah. Donnie Darko was overplayed at the last half hour as well ie stretching. Spider-Man was grebt! The Hours?!!?!?!?!?!!! Details?

My fave film of the year: Eureka (Shinji Aoyami) - came out in 2000 I think but it only got a UK release this year.

david h (david h), Friday, 8 November 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Fite Club is my favourite movie every year.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 8 November 2002 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hours is a Nicole Kidman film that I have somehow managed to miss.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Royal Tenenbaums for me too, though I've tickets for some promising new ones in the London Film Festival, including Punch Drunk Love and the new Moodyson.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Storytelling - everyone needs a Consuela.

Queen G (Queeng), Sunday, 10 November 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away! And I think Mulholland Drive came out last year, but that movie was underrated no matter how highly rated it was!

Dan I., Sunday, 10 November 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck that shit!! do you people live in some world without austin powers: GOLDMEMBER?!

ep, Sunday, 10 November 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Moonlight Mile, the first thing I've really loved Dustin Hoffman in since The Graduate -- and Secretary, which I saw the same day, would be somewhere in my top-ten-thus-far list.

I've got the commentary track of the Royal Tenenbaums DVD playing at the moment, coincidentally ($9.99 at Blockbuster, woo).

Spider-Man is super-high on my list. My mother came to visit me -- one of the only times she's done so, and at the drop of a hat because I'd been hospitalized after six months of "I feel like crap, but -- oh, is THAT why?" sickness. She never goes to movies, doesn't like them, but Spidey came out a few days after I'd recovered enough that I could walk around and stuff, so she took me to see it and I sat there in the front row, high on morphine and Mr Pibb, and was well-pleased.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 10 November 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

probably "gosford park", "insomnia", "l'emploi du temps" or most probably "monsters inc" i think. "the royal tennenbaums" was wonderful but hugely self indulgent and as ever with wes andersen a film of wonderful moments rather than a good film. i also have innordinate amount of time for "thunderpants". it may be a ridiculous farce about a child with wind problems, but no other film can have a character say "arse" with such pathos so many times. i loved it. also proves that rupert grint will in fact become the greatest thing in cinema EVER

anyone got any thoughts on the worst film they've seen? i'm sad to say i'd have to go for werner herzog's "invincible" which was just depressing. i love herzog and there were wonderful moments but was hugely depressing. i saw it at the bradford film festival and we had to give it a standing ovation because the lead character's ancestor's were in the audience... very very sad

chris browning (commonswings), Sunday, 10 November 2002 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

pah it's gonna be dead or alive 3

bob zemko (bob), Sunday, 10 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

24 hour party people and cq were my faves.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't say I really liked any movies this year. Red Dragon was passable, as was Good Girl. I wish I had seen In The Bedroom. 24HPP was a shocking letdown after all the critical lauds.

But SIGNS. so so SO bad. M Night Shyamalan has 1/2 of what's good about Spielberg and double what's bad.

Aaron A., Monday, 11 November 2002 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

So far Talk To Her stands head and shoulders above the competition. But that competition includes The Warrior, Monsoon Wedding, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Frailty, Lantana, Donnie Darko, No Man's Land, Morvern Callar, 24 Hour Party People, My Little Eye.

That I can remember.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Avalon. It was grebt in a pointless sort of way. Here's my lazy-journo review: "Ghost in the Shell meets von Trier's Kingdom via Robin of Sherwood, Companion Level Dungeons and Dragons, Ishiguro's novel The Unconsoled, ON (bad brown) ACID."

This is all largely true.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Alan, I think you dropped something.

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

top ten is fine? of those i've seen, haewon makes it feel like it must've needed to be padded out somehow.
