no I'm not on there peace, and don't do exclusive clubs. But I would recommenced a pocketful of inch and a half 8's screws and a decent pozi driver. Then just simply screw them in to burst the tyres or get smaller (maybe some 1/2 inch 8's?) screws and angle them into the tread low down as possible so it hopefully the driver won't notice them and it won't burst the tyre until the car moves .. ho ho ho!

my family of three are currently living a fairly typical middle-class lifestyle, not that much different to the typical middle-class lifestyle that i had growing up

a key difference tho is that my current middle-class life requires the income of both my wife and i to maintain, while when i was a kid my dad could support a family of three on his income alone while earning probably about the same as i am today

Welshy's Lean Bulk - ****loads of pics (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:19 (five years ago) link

Obvs in a UK context there's distinction between being materially middle-class and being culturally middle-class and nobody will agree on where the lines are. As BG notes above, the materially middle class lifestyle is highly dependent on multiple incomes or great jobs that are, one way or another, much more precarious than they might have been in the past. You can be materially middle class and not posh, i guess you can be posh and not materially middle class.

Poshness is relative, though. I am probably perceived as posh in Chatham, not posh elsewhere.

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

Growing up I always thought a sign that someone was posh was that they had the radio times instead of one of the cheapo TV guides, daft maybe but so are a lot of the ways poshness is defined - I think some of the area covered by these poll options if I understand them is like posh in the same way that walkers sensations are posh

I grew up on a council estate and today I still live in social housing in the same postcode so I’m not displaying much in the way of mobility upward or down. My dad was a builder and now works in a Tesco, mum worked nights at an old folks home but got a degree when I was in secondary school and moved into the middle class profession of teaching at an fe college (we still never had any money tho). Dad comes from an Afro-Caribbean immigrant family in east London - he’s never really talked much about it but I think he had a rough childhood before joining the army. Mum’s folks come from the Glasgow tenements - to hear them talk, growing up poor but happy chugging mince n tatties in an open midden - and my grandparents came to Cambridge to look for jobs with nothing but the mattress on their backs, and the rest of the clan (a lot of them, they’re catholics) eventually followed them down. Underclass cred side note btw, that side of the family has some dodgy crims and I could tell some calzian stories about the degenerate fucking villains and thugs in my extended family!

Having said all that my current job is the first one I’ve ever had where the pay was expressed to me as an annual rather than hourly figure - it’s just another drone job really and doesn’t pay that well but it’s undeniably a more middle class industry, most of my coworkers are university educated (unlike me). And I don’t feel “culturally working class” I don’t think, I’m pretty sure I eat whatever the wealthy columnists have decided the middle class foods are now, plus I do the guardian xword.

tldr it is stupid to pretend that posh means the same as “a bit middle class in some respects; I’ve no doubt most ilxors are the latter; if I’d voted in this I’d have hovered between not posh honest and scum but like, crème de la scum

my Gran from Tralee use to give me booze and fags from the age of 14, she used to be a chainsmoker with this exotic looking cigarette holder - well I'd seen one before. She was the only family on my dad's side I had much affection for. I can still remember playing her the pet shop boys Disco album and she was saying: this is real grand music is this. (additional wrinkle in the truthbomb digression: radio times ONLY carried BBC-related info before 1991)

This is true – and the TV Times ONLY had ITV/Channel 4. What's more, before that year no other magazines (or newspapers) could print a whole week's worth of TV – only that day's. So more or less everyone in 70s/80s Britain who had a TV bought bought Radio/TV Times if they wanted to know what was coming up. It was amazing when the papers suddenly could print their own TV guides – a big tabloid hullabaloo.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 5 August 2019 10:03 (five years ago) link

It was obligatory, you had to buy both, every week.

When they got to publish each other's schedule, most people (I believe) went Radio Times. TV Times was more about Soap Opera coverage. Mind you, the RT definitely got more gentrified, particularly when you get an indication of the target market via the adverts : Statuettes, ceramic plates, commemorative gold coins of 3 mm wide from obscure islands with suitably "ROyal Minte" type names. (I think it's like this now, innit?)

So, it got to only buying the Christmas edition, then not even that.

Mark G, Monday, 5 August 2019 10:14 (five years ago) link

Yeah, we only had them at christmas, can't remember what we'd do the rest of the year if we wanted to know what was on a few days in advance... use ceefax maybe?

But you tell young people today about the TV Times/Radio Times closed shop, they won't believe you (at least, that's how I interpret the glazed, bored look in their eye)
