Robotech, Starblazers & Voltron: C/D?

I just bought a DVD set of Robotech, officially beginning the first stage of my mid-life crisis, and was surprised at how quickly it brought back memories/mindset of me as an 11-year-old. Were these any good, and what does it mean to be getting a kick out of them at this point?

I still think all the haircuts and haircolours have had a lingering impact stylewise. At least around UCI they sure do!

Did you knwo that all three Robotech series were actually three different sci fi cartoons in Japan that they pretended were all the same story for american audiences?

That's what made it so great. They probably do the same there with, I dunno, Friends, TekWar and 20/20.

I'm buying one Star Blazers DVD per month. It is soooooo good. The whole obsession with "Mecha" (i.e. human-like machines/giant robots) was not really my cup of tea. I think I reject it because my father has always scoffed at martial arts and Mecha is a real extension of that obsession; and Star Blazers and Captain Harlock seemed more about psychedelia and space-ships. I'm still waiting for those Yamamoto directed Daft Punk videos to come out on DVD too.

Oh man when i was little i used to watch Robotech every day and i cried when Rick left Minmae for Lisa that was messed up.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 8 November 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki, Lisa Hayes is the hottest animated character ever (except for Nova on Star Blazers). If you don't agree you can Chow on my nuts!

When are those GoLion DVDs coming out? They changed a lot of shit for Voltron, it's like a Macross-->Robotech type thing.

I finally saw all of the Yamato movies. They're just incredible. The animation on the last one is amazing.

Man, that would be great! So it turns out Carl Macek invented video mash-ups, I guess.

the concept of protoculture is pretty woah

chaki, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

isn't "protoculture" different in Macross and Robotech? I've just recently watched Macross but I haven't seen Robotech since I was little.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

yah in macross it was the ancient race that created humans and zentradi. in robotech it was this energy source they found on the sdf when it crashed. its ancient stuff like the spice from dune and it comes from the flower of life! also it makes the airplanes turn to robots and helps people find LOVE through the songs of minmei!!

chaki, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

yah but the zentradi basically being crippled strategically because minmei gave them bonerz and they didn't understand why in Macross was some pretty funny shit.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

how did that work out in Robotech?

marmotwolof, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

same way. she started singing and un spacey broadcast the song all over the space war frequency and the zentradi surrendered. then they shrunk down and became friends with the humans and max and that one hot blue haired zentradi had a kid. also the zentradi started carrying around minmei dolls and trinkets like little japanese girls.

Her name is Milia in Macross. She was the hottest.

Are any of Minmei's songs better dubbed in English or were the Japanese versions the best? I swear they made you listen to "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" like 20 times.
"Kyuun, kyuun! Kyuun, kyuun! Watashi no kare wa pailotto!"
