Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 2 August 2019 03:00 (six years ago)

lmao at Avatar still being that highly rated

of what I'd seen I'd probs go with Dogtooth

Simon H., Friday, 2 August 2019 03:02 (six years ago)

To clarify, the ratings in this go-around aren't from the overall top 1,000 but rather the top 1,000-ranked 21st century films. Only 2 of these actually make the all-time list.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 2 August 2019 03:04 (six years ago)

ok but I still think they missed a digit

Simon H., Friday, 2 August 2019 03:04 (six years ago)

of those I've seen, Bright Star, which I love in spite of Ben Whishaw. I should see Mother and Police, Adjective.

Funky Isolations (jed_), Friday, 2 August 2019 03:12 (six years ago)

I love I Am Love, Dogtooth, and Fishtank, but The White Ribbon is no question the most amazing film on this list imo

Dan S, Friday, 2 August 2019 03:20 (six years ago)

Fish Tank--haven't seen very many of these.

clemenza, Friday, 2 August 2019 03:23 (six years ago)

Really liked at the time; should probably watch again:
Inglourious Basterds
A Serious Man
Up

Liked then, and still liked upon a recent rewatch:
Coraline

Liked well enough at the time, but no real desire to watch again:
Bright Star
District 9
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Mother

I get why people like them, but they just weren't for me:
Dogtooth
I Am Love
In the Loop

Saw at the time, but have retained little memory of 10 years on:
Fish Tank
Moon
Up in the Air
Vincere

Fuck off:
Antichrist
Avatar

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Friday, 2 August 2019 04:03 (six years ago)

too many candidates

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 August 2019 04:10 (six years ago)

In the Loop is a good candidate, there have been almost no better comedies since

Simon H., Friday, 2 August 2019 04:14 (six years ago)

re: The White Ribbon, the story seemed benign at first, but the malevolent undercurrent that surfaced in it was really something else. also it had the best voice-over narration of any film I can remember

Dan S, Friday, 2 August 2019 04:52 (six years ago)

psst the kids become nazis nudge nudge get it? fuck a haneke

adam the (abanana), Friday, 2 August 2019 05:15 (six years ago)

I liked Ebert’s conclusion that maybe “Haneke's point is that we grow so disturbed by danger that we will surrender freedom” and that if we are to prevent evil, the people most concerned with enforcing order will end up in charge, and the interests of the state will become more important than the interests of the people

it’s the adults with their small-mindedness and scapegoating who are scary, not the children

Dan S, Friday, 2 August 2019 06:03 (six years ago)

haven't seen anything by Porumboiu, looking forward to 12:08 East of Bucharest and Police, Adjective

Dan S, Friday, 2 August 2019 06:20 (six years ago)

Come on everyone, clearly it's Police Adjective by a wide margin.

Frederik B, Friday, 2 August 2019 07:16 (six years ago)

A Serious Man, which is at least as enigmatic as White Ribbon.

Chris L, Friday, 2 August 2019 08:59 (six years ago)

5/5
Dogtooth
A Serious Man

4/5
Mother
Up
The White Ribbon (although I suspect it'd lose a star on rewatch)

3/5
Moon
Up In The Air (probably a 2/5 actually, doubtful I'll ever see it again to find out)
Coraline (just about)
Fantastic Mr Fox
District 9

2/5
Avatar
which I always think should be written with an exclamation point a la Airplane!, so:
Avatar!

crumhorn invasion (Matt #2), Friday, 2 August 2019 10:33 (six years ago)

I'm surprised The Hurt Locker isn't here.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 August 2019 11:12 (six years ago)

It's technically from 08. Premiered at Venice.

Frederik B, Friday, 2 August 2019 11:15 (six years ago)

Yup, ranks #51 on the 21st century list.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 2 August 2019 11:26 (six years ago)

Generally unmoved by Haeneke but remember being really impressed by White Ribbon, have been meaning to rewatch it ever since but never got around to it, maybe this is finally the weekend.

Recently saw Police, Adjective and while I love 12:08 East of Bucharest I found Police to be a bit of a letdown in comparison.

For me this probably comes down to Dogtooth/Serious/Prophet.

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:00 (six years ago)

Why does Avatar feel a lot more recent than the rest of these films? I saw it at the cinema, so it can't be a matter of having seen it more recently.

Anyway, Dogtooth

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:10 (six years ago)

Coraline is fantastic though

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:10 (six years ago)

A Serious Man over Fantastic Mr. Fox and Dogtooth.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 August 2019 18:45 (six years ago)

The further into the distance all these years fade, the less I care about what year I actually saw them in theaters.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 2 August 2019 20:48 (six years ago)

I’ve seen Fantastic Mr. Fox like 100 times at this point and am pretty proud that it’s my kid’s favorite movie, so that

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 August 2019 21:18 (six years ago)

would love to be able to see DDR/DDR

Dan S, Saturday, 3 August 2019 01:11 (six years ago)

after Toni Erdmann I went back and watched Forest for the Trees, thought it was really interesting. still haven’t seen Everyone Else

Dan S, Saturday, 3 August 2019 01:49 (six years ago)

liked all of these, to varying degrees:

coraline
antichrist
dogtooth
fantastic mr fox
fish tank
moon
the white ribbon
a serious man

couldn't really pick an absolute favorite from this bunch, but voted coraline just cause that seems like the one i'd be most likely to watch again at this point

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 3 August 2019 19:36 (six years ago)

my main memory of A Serious Man was after liking the story so much being disappointed by the abrupt ending and the feeling that it was unfinished. only saw it once though and realize this is a distorted perspective

Dan S, Saturday, 3 August 2019 23:35 (six years ago)

along with Llewyn Davis it’s the film of theirs I most want to see again

Dan S, Saturday, 3 August 2019 23:36 (six years ago)

likely I have Wild Grass nosing out Fox and Dogtooth

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:02 (six years ago)

only saw The Headless Woman a couple of years ago, was mesmerized by it

Dan S, Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:09 (six years ago)

really couldn't relate to Hunger, felt like I wasn't in the same constellation when I saw it, would watch it again though

Dan S, Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:36 (six years ago)

two weeks pass...

In the end, went A Serious Man.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 August 2019 17:28 (five years ago)

really torn between FMF and IB

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 17:30 (five years ago)

oh shit and A Serious Man too?! shit

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 17:30 (five years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 22 August 2019 00:01 (five years ago)

lmao at Avatar still being that highly rated

this rating is equally unfathomable to me:

UP IN THE AIR (Jason Reitman, USA) [#471]

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 22 August 2019 00:04 (five years ago)

I didn’t notice at first that the ranking is only for 21st C films.

Dan S, Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:02 (five years ago)

it's kind of surprising that Avatar would be one of only two films from 2009 that have so far made it onto the all-time list

Dan S, Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:11 (five years ago)

My favorite films:

Summer Hours (Olivier Assayas)
A Serious Man (Ethan and Joel Coen)
Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson)
Bright Star (Jane Campion)
The Headless Woman (Lucretia Martel)
Me and Orson Welles (Richard Linklater)
Julia (Erick Zonca)
Two Lovers (James Gray)
Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola)
Still Walking (Hirokazu Kore-eda)

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 August 2019 12:34 (five years ago)

Mine:

Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola, USA/Argentina/Spain)
A Serious Man (Joel & Ethan Coen, USA)
Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson, USA)
Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos, Greece)
Antichrist (Lars Von Trier, Int’l)
Halloween II (Rob Zombie, USA) [director’s cut]
Enter the Void's opening credits (Gaspar Noé, France)
Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, USA)
Mother (Bong Joon-ho, South Korea)
I Love You, Phillip Morris (Glenn Ficarra & John Requa, USA)

Two Lovers would be in the top 3, but I go with IMDB date.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 August 2019 13:20 (five years ago)

I Love You, Phillip Morris didn't open here until fall 2010 (I should say "was dumped here").

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 August 2019 13:21 (five years ago)

lol gonna assume the 2 avatar votes are trolling

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:20 (five years ago)

better choice than IB

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:22 (five years ago)

jeezus, it's better than MOON

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:23 (five years ago)

At least Moon is over an hour shorter

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:32 (five years ago)

still haven't seen Tetro

Dan S, Friday, 23 August 2019 00:45 (five years ago)

I worked at a movie theater in Buffalo that was playing Tetro, and Vincent Gallo's mom called one afternoon and wanted to know if there was any foul language in it. I told her I knew it was rated R but I hadn't seen it, and she got really mad at me and hung up.

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:55 (five years ago)

I still ahvent seen it, I'm curious but I kind of want to hold out, to spite her

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:01 (five years ago)

lol

Dan S, Friday, 23 August 2019 01:01 (five years ago)

I'm sure she watched The Brown Bunny.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 23 August 2019 12:47 (five years ago)
