So Tower Records shut down Pulse magazine today. My girlfriend had been their production editor (quit at the end of September) and I've been writing for them for several months now. Lots of really great people worked there, but, because of money trouble, Tower canned the whole thing today. DUD!

Oh, is anyone hiring an entire magazine staff right now? Preferably in the Sacramento area? Cause I know some people.

Major dud dud dud. I know so many people who work/worked at Tower who are getting screwed by their money troubles.

Tower closed down their UK mag a couple of years ago, for a freebie I thought it was excellent.

Recently in the UK, Tower have closed most of their stores.

aw jeez. how many magazines have shut down in the last month? argh.

Figured it had to happen sooner or later, unfortunately. I'm still wondering when Tower will just collapse entirely. There was always at least a good article or two in any random issue of Pulse and I still treasure the hilarious mock celebration of "bizjazz" to this day...

I'm hoping the December issue still comes out for selfish reasons. I had four reviews and features on Oneida and Out Hud in there.

Shameless plug: there's a picture of me in the new one with Tori Amos on the cover.

"sacto mag staff sacked"

i just had this sick thought that you could advertise the whole staff on Ebay, Yancey

well me and andrew were talking abt it last night. in the UK only the shop in piccadilly survives. its actually far better in terms of variety of stock than anything HMV could manage. its a pity. on the other hand once it does close there might be a big clearance sale...but that's my 'rec collector scum' menatlity coming out.

I don't want tower to go :(

Yeah, Tower stores are good. And they were excellent long ago, being one of the few places to stock indie stuff.

a question - i thought that Kensington High Street store - survived the recent cull? Does anyone know if it is closed or still open?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

tower was where i bought my first indie label album ever (ultramega ok by soundgarden), and it was my official record store in high school. that said, i think they are sorta overpriced these days, and their selection isn't what it once was (or maybe admittedly the novelty wore off).

maura (maura), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Kensington High St is still there. My best friend's husband works there, so it would be really problematic if it closed...

kate, Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, OK. thought they all had closed up. but it seems to be near the end for tower.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

the big store strategy and sky high prices - seem Tower's downfall.

In the UK medium sized stores such as Fopp and Music Zone are opening new branches - their main strengths are competitive low prices. [Indeed Music Zone (a northern chain of music shops) have plans to open stores in London in 2003.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

it is too bad about pulse, and tower. i like the store they have near George Washington University in DC. They always have loads of electronic music in the listening stations.
for alla the DC locals, the Olssons in Alexandria has become really shitty as well. they used to have a great indie selection.
