do you reckon famous people use the internet the same way we do? that is, they subscribe to mailing lists and post to discussion boards and stuff like that.

if they do, do you reckon they have to concoct elaborate false online personas to prevent themselves from being buried in fanmail?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

are any ILX posters secretly famous?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. I'm actually Momus.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I am really Winona Ryder, and I never "got" Westerberg.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I know this might come as a shock, but I'm actually famous interweb journalist Tom Ewing.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm famous for fifteen Swedish.

Dickon Edwards (Dickon Edwards), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm world famous in Dunedin.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I was recently outed as Hugh Grant. Which was funny, cos in real life I'm much more famous than that horny piss.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm one of those awful 'local celebrities' they get to come open a new car dealership or such.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always thought that all of the trolls are really drunk celebrities.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

My good mate David 'Dave' Bowie was telling me this morning in the Cafe Gitane that he usually spends about three hours each morning trolling around on the net using such fake ids as 'ziggystardust', 'thinwhiteduke', 'absolutebeginner' and 'tinmachine'. He says the obvious ones are the best because nobody would suspect in a million years it was him. He's usually just posting stuff to various boards about contemporary art, the advisability of botox shots, and the nicest places to holiday in Java. He says Iman is getting a bit pissed off about it because she thinks he prefers the internet to her.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 8 November 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone catch the "Bowie Secrets" on Conan O'brien last night? It was great!

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 8 November 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

after anthony turned me onto the work of mel ramos i added him to my AIM buddy list ("Meljramos") so i can see when he's online. i never talk to him tho. is this "stalking"?

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 8 November 2002 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm famous. Please don't send any e-mail.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 8 November 2002 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear the Inventor of Emo might post on ILx sometimes.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 8 November 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw a TV interview with Johnnie Vegas once in which he admitted that he frequents one of those "virtual bar" type chat rooms using the name "Unabashed"

C J (C J), Friday, 8 November 2002 08:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't tell if Momus is joking.

I hope Tad is joking.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 8 November 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not famous.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 8 November 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i believe johnnie vegas frequents "beauty's castle" although as i am at work, there is *no way* i am doing a google search for it.

also that was possibly one of the funniest things i have seen on telly in a v long time (it was on room 101).

i think it's missy herself starting all those FNV threads...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 8 November 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 8 November 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, you fuckwads.

my real point was, say someone like John Leslie. Do you reckon he subs to mailing lists and posts to discussion boards, and if so how does he stop tabloids running shock horror articles about John Leslie's internet posting shame?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear the Inventor of Emo might post on ILx sometimes.

Someone told me the Bassist for the Hated posts here.

Also, Calvin Johnson frequents the makeoutclub.com messageboard. He was the victim of a Minor Threat reunion hoax perpetuated by YT.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim O'Rourke was subscribed to the Sonic Youth mailing list. He did not sign off with his name, but did SPAM... oh okay he recommended records that he had produced. hahahaha Pretty funny.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

who is the inventor of emo?

can we have him/her dealt with?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

DV (dirtyvicar@eircom.net): COULD YOU LIST 10 EMO BANDS FOR ME?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I am famous but, thankfully, not too.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i hope i become famous some day so everybody can about how they knew me when. i'll continue to post to il*, but just become madder and madder. but then no one will actually have the guts to contradict me, cause i'll be, like, famous, right?

kate, Friday, 8 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

famous internet journalist tom ewing is definitely famous cos he was quoted in new media guardian recently.

Ed (dali), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate: When you become famous, can I be your insane-but-harmless stalker?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

sure, dan. i'd rather an insane-but-harmless stalker than my usual barking mad style stalker...

kate, Friday, 8 November 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm famous, but I don't use the internet.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Specialised mailing groups often seem to include people famous in those areas - I won't bother citing comic examples (anyone heard of Sam Glanzman?), but I was in a soul music group with the mighty Swamp Dogg for a while.
