Sorry for the terrible title.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:47 (five years ago)

My head says Truffaut, my heart says haunted house in space.

I don't get wet because I am tall and thin and I am afraid of people (Eliza D.), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:52 (five years ago)

Either 400 Blows or Serious Man. Weakest is Midnight Cowboy.

o. nate, Friday, 23 August 2019 14:58 (five years ago)

Ooh tough selection

Regles tho

what's wrong with being centre-y? (Noodle Vague), Friday, 23 August 2019 15:02 (five years ago)

voted for 4 of these in the original polls. my favorite is Late Spring

Dan S, Friday, 23 August 2019 15:04 (five years ago)

Well these aren't very XXX.

jmm, Friday, 23 August 2019 15:16 (five years ago)

Agreed that Midnight Cowboy is probably the weakest one here. It just barely beat out Kes and The Color of Pomegranates.

Règle du jeu - madness always wins the day. It’s close between the first four though tbh. And I want a Balzac shrine.

tangenttangent, Friday, 23 August 2019 19:07 (five years ago)

1. The 400 Blows, 2. Midnight Cowboy or The Straight Story

Poll results: 1. The Rules of the Game, 2. Tokyo Story, 3. Do the Right Thing

Love: The Rules of the Game, Late Spring, Alien

Appreciate: Man With a Movie Camera, 400 Blows, Do the Right Thing, A Serious Man

I haven't seen the remainder.

jmm, Friday, 23 August 2019 20:08 (five years ago)

Alien still sucks as much as when it bored and disgusted me 40 years ago

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 24 August 2019 03:14 (five years ago)

Gonna be the asshole who votes Vertov

Simon H., Saturday, 24 August 2019 03:47 (five years ago)

A Serious Cowboy Alien

... (Eazy), Saturday, 24 August 2019 04:09 (five years ago)

Well these aren't very XXX.

― jmm, Friday, August 23, 2019 3:16 PM (yesterday)

yeah, midnight cowboy was only an X!

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 24 August 2019 18:50 (five years ago)

man with a movie camera because no one else is going to vote for it

flappy bird, Saturday, 24 August 2019 22:41 (five years ago)

Same reasoning, although It'll make me vote for Beau Travail

Frederik B, Saturday, 24 August 2019 23:59 (five years ago)

people will vote for beau travail

flappy bird, Sunday, 25 August 2019 01:14 (five years ago)

I like the most recent films on the list, especially Beau Travail, but the films of the first four decades are really the ones imo

Dan S, Sunday, 25 August 2019 02:11 (five years ago)

i barely remember a serious man.

Possibly the wrongest opinion yet from a master of wrong opinions

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:15 (five years ago)

you hadn’t encountered it yet? he repeats it so often

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:55 (five years ago)

out of all his wrong opinions that one is probably the most objectively wrong

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 03:05 (five years ago)

I fucked up and never saw Alien in a theater before Disney sealed the vault

flappy bird, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 04:58 (five years ago)

Alien is screening at the AFI Silver in Silver Spring this weekend, probably as a DCP.

Chris L, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 06:57 (five years ago)

Morbs has had way wronger opinions than that, come along.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:58 (five years ago)

I'd probably rank them ...

THE RULES OF THE GAME (Jean Renoir, France, 1939)
DO THE RIGHT THING (Spike Lee, USA, 1989)
LATE SPRING (Yasujiro Ozu, Japan, 1949)

A SERIOUS MAN (Joel & Ethan Coen, USA, 2009)
BEAU TRAVAIL (Claire Denis, France, 1999)
MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA (Dziga Vertov, USSR, 1929)
THE 400 BLOWS (François Truffaut, France, 1959)

THE STRAIGHT STORY (David Lynch, USA, 1999)
ALIEN (Ridley Scott, USA, 1979)

MIDNIGHT COWBOY (John Schlesinger, USA, 1969)

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 16:01 (five years ago)

Those are in groupings of roughly equal merit.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 16:01 (five years ago)

haven't seen the Coens or Denis, but that looks otm

rob, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 16:05 (five years ago)

Midnight Cowboy was great I thought.

just watched The Straight Story for the first time. I liked it a lot but didn't think it was as great as the films of the earlier decades

System, Thursday, 5 September 2019 00:01 (five years ago)

you horror-film pantswetters should read more carefully

that The Monster On the Spaceship bored and disgusted *me* is a fact, not an opinion

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 September 2019 00:47 (five years ago)

you find the movie boring and disgusting

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 September 2019 00:48 (five years ago)

overall the results seem pretty good

Dan S, Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:17 (five years ago)

It's a fact based on your opinions, you ninny

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:38 (five years ago)

xp didn't vote for The Rules of the Game (went for The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums, would have picked The Wizard of Oz second), but can't argue that it is one of the greatest films

Dan S, Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:41 (five years ago)

overall the results seem pretty good

Great, even.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:46 (five years ago)

yes

really like Midnight Cowboy but My Night at Maud's, which came in 8th in the 1969 poll, is one of my favorite films of all time
