I see 16yo wildcard Zachary Svajda (ranked 1400+) eventually fell in 4.5 hours to Lorenzi after being two sets up (Lorenzi being a LL replacement for Anderson). I remember teenage Murray and Edberg suffering similar reversals in their early Slam appearances. Character building, yada yada.

Fed had already got over the hump when I tuned in - up 3-6 6-2 3-0 and threatening a double-break. Dzumhur was pretty good from then on. Courier and McEnroe discussing Slam totals, and the usual talking point about no-one playing Australia in '70s/'80s, the pre-Open era, yada yada. JC: "How many would you have won if everyone had committed to all four Slams?" JMcE: "Er, 26!" He later said "I'd have hoped to make the teens." So, er, six straight Aussie titles from '78, yeah? still think we're ~90% likely to get med/novak; medvedev is gonna get thru this guy, and while ill be rooting stan, its too big an ask; i havent been overly impressed w stans level the first 3 rds, he'd have to really level up

stan is still super solid, hes pushing novak back early on here & just broke

Was golfing this afternoon and wasn't able to watch, but way to go, Bianca. I want Serena to pass Margaret Court, so either result would have been okay, but this was the better of the two.

Andreescu has not lost a completed match since March 1st(!), is now 45-4 this year and on a 14 match winning streak.

What is she like on clay and grass?

I think the fair answer at this point would be: we don't know?

She won a $25k ITF event on clay in Italy in Mar 2017, and she's racked up a few match wins in $100k ITF events in Ikley and Manchester on grass, and some WTA qualies. Barely played a WTA main draw on either surface though. She's almost having a late-period Nadal year: almost unbeatable, except when she can't physically finish the match, and misses entire months with injury.

I think this was a fairly major dip in Serena's form, especially serving, compared to her run to the final. Each of these Slam final defeats in isolation looks like just a case of running into someone playing lights-out great, but SW's fall-off on the final weekend is a pattern now.

Andreescu is phenomenal though. She's not even surprised by her own success. I was on the fence before the match but couldn't stand the idea of BA (or anyone) losing from 6-3 5-1 mp, so I was cheering her home.

meds has hit some costly errors on m/l rally balls that have really hurt him

I think this is about where I bailed on last year’s final, and Delpo was a little closer to Novak over those two sets. Medvedev won’t go away easily but Rafa is so dialled in it’s ridiculous.

Given the outcome probably best that I missed half a classic for sleep. Weirdly, I did wake up at 2:10am and checked the score. That would have been pretty much exactly when it finished, right?

Shame that Rafa appears be playing such a light schedule from here (though autumn is rarely his best season) as he could pass Novak for #1. May still do so.

But it’s Carousel time now. No one born before 1990 is allowed to win any more Slams. Come on.

I think that will end soon enough (lol at this post next year all you like) but I went to bed with Rafa 2-0 down and it was great to see Med fighting back. Get a great feeling that he can win a few, and start on that soon.
