Turtle Escape!

an old housemate stuck me and current roomie with a pair of illegal chinese turtles. we have been trying to get rid of them for months. the larger one eats parts of the smaller one's shell and they both have a fecal infection that turns their water noxious within a week of refreshing it. today i came home and went to feed them and could only find one. i was stumped, but occam's razor told me that the larger one had just died and my roommate had disposed of it without telling me. then i took a shower and contemplated the scent of vanilla and i realized that it had just escaped. i towelled off, and using deduction, was able to determine the vicinity of an errant turtle. i found it hiding behind some parts of my roomies car (they live in our living room[the car parts(the turtles also)]). it was inching towards an unprotected electrical outlet. as i picked it up, it hissed at me. haha, back in the tank, jerk. what does it all mean?

You should call animal control and say that turtles somehow got into the house. It would be good for you and the turtles.

I would try the department of conservation or wildlife department (failing that zoo) because they usually deal with trade in endangered species stuff.

Learn to love them. I have a house mate who is a turtle. Her name is Lucy and she is quite likeable.

What about the wildlife dept. or a museum? if you are in NZ I can tell you who to call.

isadora (isadora), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

yep they need a good home. if you are in australia you could try WIRES, they deal with all sorts of animals not only native or sick / injured ones i think?
otherwise i think mike is right, learn to love them. we had a pet long-necked tortoise for years, called brian. he was pretty cool as a pet, not exactly loving but definately interesting.

i actually came into the deal thinking i would quite like having them around. turtles used to be one of my favorite animals, when it was theoretical. these ones are just beyond my means to care for adequately, plus they are nasty, diseased, and clearly unhappy (see: jailbreak, attempted self-electrocution). we have tried to handle this situation before, but the ex-roomie (an asshole) has pleaded with us to not get rid of them before he gets a chance to come back and pick them up. as a result, we've been stalled several times and can't commit to any kind of action that would benefit the turtles. they need a much bigger tank (they are supposed to grow quite large) and may need seperate tanks as there is one that is quite hostile. also, the fecal infection is not helping things. i would like very much for them to have a good life, it just has to be elsewhere. i am sick of these things.

i caught that turtle like a duck in a noose.

forget the ex-roomie who is obviously going to be too late to save the poor things.
they deserve a LIFE !
ring some vets, see what they can come up with in the way of possible turtle saviours.

The very night I got my first hermit-crab, it somehow escaped from its cage while my parents and I were out, survived a drop of a table (unless it was able to climb down, but that seems doubtful), and was found walking around the apartment we were staying in down the shore. I was incredibly upset when I discovered it was missing. I even stopped eating my ice cream cone with punpkin ice cream* in it, and put it into the sink, I was in elementary school at the time. I can't quite fathom being that attached to a new hermit-crab from where I am now.

*An ice cream store selling flavors like green tea and pumpkin had opened up. Very exotic for a mid-70's east coast family resort.

Expose them to intense radiation and then train them up into a hard-as-nails crime-fighting squad.
