Any word on this new McBride show, The Righteous Gemstones? I only literally this moment learned of its existence from a random website ad.

I watched the first episode, it continues very much in the same vein as his previous two HBO shows - same type of characters, same type of dialogue, same type of conflicts/themes. First ep alternated between mildly amusing and artfully crafted disturbing.

― Οὖτις, Thursday, August 22, 2019 9:13 AM (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

well on second thought maybe it was just the very end that was "oh yikes so uh now this is happening"

― Οὖτις, Thursday, August 22, 2019 9:15 AM (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

Second episode was pretty damn good tho I thought Walter Goggles was going to be in it. Edi Patterson is great and Keefe (the ex-Satanist guy) is just about perfect.

Appearance of Goggins in ep3 def kicked this up a notch

We enjoyed the first ep, but it was a bit of a letdown after two eps of On Becoming a God in Central Florida.

I kinda want every episode to just introduce/focus on a new bizarre family member (fingers crossed for stevie janowski appearance)

"let's see those balls ..c'mon!" lol that was p funny, glad Goggins has turned up.

some serious Scorsese/Casino vibes with that opening cash-flow montage in the last ep

Feel like this is better than Vice Principals, the bigger cast/broader range of focal points work in its favor

Damn still haven't even started this. The Deuce came back this week (?!)

nah, (so far) this has a huge serious core topic that is just a hook to hang tomfoolery upon; Vice Principals treated a very tiny unimportant position as massively important, for greater fundamental comic effect.

also more & better Goggins.

next weeks ep looks like a good flashback one from the teaser, with hopefully much more Goggins.

― calzino, Wednesday, September 11, 2019 1:38 PM (three weeks ago) bookmarkflaglink

kinda wanna poll the wigs/hairstyles on this but Goggins would probably take it easily

― Οὖτις, Wednesday, September 11, 2019 2:00 PM (three weeks ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah, hoping the teaser is not in fact merely teasing a whole episode of flashback

Never made it all the way through vice principals, but i’m enjoying gemstones a lot. i’m not finding it particularly laugh-out-loud funny though, especially compared to eastbound and down. the most consistently funny characters are judy and keefe, but even they are more smirk-inducing than anything

Vice Principals never quite hit for me, although I was watching in binge fashion having not watched it as released.

Gemstones is great so far and the existence of a well-plotted backstory and history really paid off in this week's flashback episode

― I'm a board man. Board man gets paid (Will M.), Thursday, September 19, 2019 1:55 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I didn't see Vice Principals, but this new show is one of the most tonally strange things I've ever seen. We're on episode 4, I think, and often it feels like watching a show set in some alternate universe of gangster preachers, stuntmen and raving Satanists. Which ... I guess it is? But it's so ott cartoonish without being funny like a cartoon. Or maybe silly without silly-show laughs, because it's interrupted by violent showdowns and gun waving in place of slapstick? I dunno, it's weird. I think we like it, though sometimes I have to ask myself what the fuck I'm watching.

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 2:20 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

some of it is cartoonish, but have you been following the Falwells lately?

― untuned mass damper (mh), Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:21 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

For sure! But violently feuding with rival preachers isn't cartoonish, it's dark, especially as depicted here, which doesn't seem comedic, or even satirical. Now, preachers as actual crime families *is* perfectly satirical, and I do like the show, but like I said, the tone is all over the place. I don't know what to call it, even though black comedy maybe comes closest?

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:28 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

the satan worshipper rave party seemed pretty awesome imo

― untuned mass damper (mh), Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:43 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

It did! It was insane! My wife was all, wait, what city is this!?

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:45 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

That's why it feels like an alternate universe. There's this cabal of preachers, but there's also enough Satan ravers to fill a warehouse.

wow, that is transparently the inspiration for those scenes. Still, JiC and fam correct in that I don't see an orgy breaking out of it.

― Tart Prepper (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, September 21, 2019 9:53 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

xpost Holy shit!

Anyway, my broader point was not any lack of realism, it's that the dramatic stuff is (and is played) more serious than the comedy stuff is funny, which makes everything kind of discordant. In episode 4, for example, you've got the wife on her assault weapons course, which is ridiculous but not terribly funny, or particularly played for laughs. Or in the previous episode, I think, you've got McBride's crew, who are inherently funny, but the scene with McBride threatening the guy with the stiletto knife to his throat is ... not funny, even of the situation is similarly ridiculous. Or in this most recent one, McBride and his wife in the car chase, also silly, also not funny, or played for many laughs. Tonally crazy.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, September 22, 2019 4:31 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I guess I remember Eastbound being more overlty funny, but I suppose from Pineapple Express to Halloween, this awkward tonal mix has sort of been McBride's and David Gordon Green's jam.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, September 22, 2019 4:44 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I don't know what you're accusing him of, but those are just some guys he does car pranks with.

But violently feuding with rival preachers isn't cartoonish, it's dark, especially as depicted here, which doesn't seem comedic, or even satirical.

Violently feuding high school teachers also isnt terribly realistic, and some of the shit those 2 did to the other principal was HORRIBLE and dark. Thats the point of the stuff McBride does, right? Yer on board with it or not, I guess.

Just to reiterate, I like this new show! Just hard to get a handle on. Dark crime family drama heist comedy satire?

BTW, I know he's getting older, and playing a character, and has lost a lot of weight, but Goodman just seems so kind of last-role tired in this. Like, literally tired. Hope he's ok.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, September 22, 2019 7:24 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

It’s called acting

― untuned mass damper (mh), Sunday, September 22, 2019 7:36 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I think, outside of making everything over the top, what the McBride/Hill shows do is a caricature of excess that is ridiculous on its face rather than crafting an intricate plot about white collar crime or an intrigue about minutiae. And then they smash all the caricatures together. Do megachurches do things to lure people away to their own congregation to the point of sabotage and rumor? Sure, but that’s not nearly as obvious in screen as just smashing things, or as ridiculous and funny

The theory posited elsewhere that their shows have a deeply Protestant feel, that all sins are forgiven if you repent (or repeatedly have to repent) or that you’re one of the chosen because you’re moneyed, works for me. It’s like a guy in a hole who isn’t getting any closer to the surface but occasionally runs into a gold nugget as he burrows deeper. You can’t be both successful and wrong.

― untuned mass damper (mh), Sunday, September 22, 2019 7:45 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

a deeply Protestant feel, that all sins are forgiven if you repent

surely this is more a Catholic point of view?

Luther believed that redemption was already baked into humanity. Jesus died on the cross FOR you. Calvin believed in predestination. doesn't matter how much you repent.

― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, September 23, 2019 2:57 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I do like the idea of ott caricatures doing regular things. Usually in shows and movies it's regular people doing silly stuff. In this it's silly people doing serious stuff. Like, McBride is innately funny and funny-looking and his arrogant line readings are funny, so when you see him waving a gun you expect it to be funny, too, but it's not, not really. Same with Goggins, a kind of goofy looking dude on a good day magnified to 100 in this, but then his behavior, while still ridiculous, is nowhere near as ridiculous as the way he looks. Or Kelvin, that character is such a cartoon, but he's (so far) almost the most sincere of all of them, and Keefe (!), for being a big weirdo, is at least something of a real success story in this preacher world.

And yet even beyond that the show has no problem with good old dumb humor, too, like making fun of Mrs. Baby Billy's teeth, which is a real Farrelly Brothers thing to do.

Re: religion, this world is straight up prosperity gospel, right? Which is Protestant.

(Back to Goodman, btw. Yeah, acting. I hope! Because when he was overweight and breathing heavy in every scene, that sure wasn't acting.)

― Josh in Chicago, Monday, September 23, 2019 5:03 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

xp I think it's more that the "repenting" involves public self-flagellation and has absolutely nothing to do with personal moral clarity. Catholic repentance is between you and God, with a priest as a mediator in confession. The more evangelical position is that you have to do it in front of everyone.

one month passes...

I know it's the McBride/Hill/Green stock in trade, but by the end I had trouble sticking with the radical tonal shifts back and forth from melodrama to silly to bizarre. I did like how it all wrapped up, but it's just so odd to watch these outright lunatics and weirdos in a "real world" story of redemption and family. I mean, when Kelvin goes full Danzig? That's amusing, but also totally ridiculous, just like the return to the ott sex club goth dance party dungeon rave to rescue Keefe, though that did contain my favorite joke, when Kelvin talks to the head goth and threatens him with his "seven years of Taekwondo" and the guy immediately backs down, intimidated. Lots of great moments like that throughout the whole show, of course, just felt like broad sketch characters dropped into the real world. My wife loved the whole show, though.

Definitely some funny moments last night, though I'm really not sure I like the storyline getting set up for Eli this season. We'll see.

My wife thought it was funny that they cast such a good looking guy for a young John Goodman, but such a, well, unique, looking guy for a young Eric Roberts, when you'd expect the opposite.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 15:15 (three months ago)

I feel like there's been a reverse-correlation where as Jesse has gotten less drug-addled and more mellow over the years, Baby Billy has gotten progressively more druggy and feral

this season just hasn't sucked me in like the ones previous. I guess the ones that were more crime-heavy were more fun to me, though they've obviously set up a little of that here. though Kelvin's defiant comeback made the previous ep worthwhile for me (haven't seen this week's)

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 29 April 2025 17:12 (three months ago)

I would agree, this season has been a slight step down, but there still do manage at least two or three bits that make me laugh hard enough to forgive it. This is a great example of a stellar cast elevating an otherwise weaker written season. Probably a good time to end it though.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 17:15 (three months ago)

actually felt the opener was the high water mark, showing the entire Gemstones 'religious' throughline has always been a grift. Cooper was great too.

all the stuff w/ the kids whining about dad dating mom's friend was driving me nuts. so when they brought in the Kelvin "Top Christ Following Man" subplot it helped alleviate my aggravation with that.

flashback episode was great, I always enjoy those.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 29 April 2025 18:15 (three months ago)

I have also enjoyed Doctor Watson a lot, especially since the monkey content on the back end of White Lotus season 3 was underwhelming.

Plotting of the last episode was a total mess but there are always fun goofy character moments that do well to distract.

Evan, Wednesday, 30 April 2025 01:22 (three months ago)

Yeah, my feeling as well. Total mess.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 April 2025 02:08 (three months ago)

So many years down the line and I still can't figure this North Carolina crew out. Danny McBride is pretty funny at the one thing he does (hyper-arrogant idiocy?). David Gordon Green knows how to make a drama (though judged by his cinematic track record, maybe not comedies), and Jody Hill is clearly a solid team player. Yet together the three are just so often slapdash and lazily low-brow, like a better lit Farrelly Brothers. The Halloween movies really underscored that for me. Those reboots were just such an easy lay-up - all they had to do was not be bad - but the team (minus Hill) still found a way to mess them up, making them almost insultingly stupid, imo. The failure of that Exorcist reboot implies maybe people are onto them. And yet, their TV shows serve up such a gleefully ridiculous hodgepodge that they are almost always worth watching.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 April 2025 15:47 (three months ago)

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Saturday, 3 May 2025 19:44 (three months ago)

Who are you responding to?

I thought the storytelling of the last couple of episodes was very poorly conceived and nonsensical, which does kind of clash with the sentimentality they were trying to achieve at the end.

THAT BEING SAID I love the characters and their cartoonishly gifted way with words. So I still had fun and laughed a lot, but was just less engaged with the narrative.

Evan, Thursday, 8 May 2025 16:28 (two months ago)

the plotting was less tight this year than previous seasons but the performances and jokes are dialed the fuck in, so i don't really care.

the finale hit the right emotional beats too, imo

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 May 2025 04:09 (two months ago)

yeah the plot was all over the place this season but it was just as funny if not funnier as previous seasons so I'm good with it.

best joke of the finale imo was the implication that Teenjus gets crucified

frogbs, Saturday, 17 May 2025 13:08 (two months ago)

Finally caught up with the season/series finale and ... man, what a weird-ass show this was. Never much more than half-assed, never really ambitious or even aspiring to greatness, and yet, so utterly unique and bizarre in tone and execution that it transcended qualities of good and bad. Which this finale truly encapsulated, right down to every single totally predictable and totally unpredictable beat.

One missed opportunity? Having Eli quietly die in peace at the wedding like Don Corleone at the end of The Godfather. But gotta keep that door open, right?

Re: "tonal shifts," I mean, come on, this last episode alone had a secret-society duel, a Michael Jackson dance-off, an attempted out of nowhere mass murder that left the three leads shot and bleeding and a fourth person literally spurting blood from a headshot - lots of people shot in this episode, actually - a deus ex helper monkey, low-hanging stripper pole jokes, sentimental speaking-from-beyond-the-grave stuff, the anticlimactic end of "Teenjus" ... like I posted about a bit upthread, Danny McBride and crew are many things, but tidy and focused is not one (two) of them. When in doubt they love going the lazy route for easy laughs or plot contrivance (in both film and TV), but those are apparently features, not bugs, and the look and acting of the thing is always on point even if the story is so often pretty slapdash.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 May 2025 15:48 (two months ago)

I don't think there's been enough appreciation for just how wild the costumes were in this final season

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Monday, 19 May 2025 15:56 (two months ago)

My wife noticed that when the siblings appeared together on their stage, for meetings, their batshit outfits were often often (always?) coordinated. Did you see what Keefe was wearing for a lot of this ep, what looked like a tank-top whose shoulder straps were attached with see-through wire?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 May 2025 16:02 (two months ago)

In this last season probably like 50% of the laughs I had came from the costumes - and I mean that as a compliment. Keef's tank top was 10/10, I laughed every time I saw it

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Monday, 19 May 2025 16:32 (two months ago)

yeah I've always thought this show deserved an award for costume design more than anything, so many insane/incredible fits in every season but especially this one.

I thought this season was pretty good overall, as mentioned it was at least as funny as previous seasons if not moreso, but the show itself did seem to be coming apart at the seams somewhat. it felt a bit like the Netflix Arrested Development seasons where you could tell how much they had to work around everyone's schedules. it was kinda weird seeing some of the main cast from S1 barely appear at all this season. Amber and Gideon had what, 10 minutes of screentime total?
