The Wire parallels are heavy and many but this is its own thing - sort of a flipped police/streets perspective that minimizes the former to distant sirens and allows the street world to breathe and express its fullness. I’ve binged the first season in only a few days so my impressions are slack-jawed and awed but I suspect we’ll be talking about Dushane, Jamie, Sully, Jaq, Stefan, Ats and Dris et al eventually like we do Avon, Stringer, Bodie, Dukie, and the rest.
Brits, how well can you follow this w/out subs on?

No subs required here, although listening to grime on Rinse FM for a third of my life has probably helped. Great show and I'm glad the Drake backed reboot was less bleak, if only slightly.

ohhh, i have this on my queue and was wavering on whether to start this or Bloodline or finally finish my yearlong Roma project next. Will start Top Boy.

Do I understand correctly that the Netflix series is essentially season 3 which picks up six years later? If so, I’m afraid GRE studies will have to take a back seat for another week.

I am on episode 5 and just realized that there is a Top Boy Summerhouse that is the original season 1 and 2. Regular 'Top Boy' (which I have been watching) is really season 3.

As you mentioned above.

one year passes...

I finished S3 over the summer, but watching Lovers Rock (which shares some actors, including Micheal Ward who appears en route to big things) the other day reminded me how good this was. One of the few reboots I've seen where the passage of time between seasons almost felt more like a deliberate choice than an imposition.

Lovers Rock, the episode of the Small Axe miniseries? Hadn't heard of it, just Googled. Thanks for mentioning.

Aye season 3 was great.

yeah that's the one! I won't mention the other TB actor who appears in Lovers Rock, but both are great instances of non-typecasting.

two years pass...

Not with a bang, but a whimper. Major fumble this final season. Entirely too rushed and an ending unearned. So much so that I can't even speculate as to who pulled the final trigger (though i have solid reasons to believe it wasn't either of the two who seemed most likely). I'll wait for others to chime in before spoiling.

two months pass...

Final season was daft but I still enjoyed it. Daft because of how far it floated free from reality and effectively became like a play in a self-enclosed world. And yeah, agree it was rushed.

I liked how the final scenes between Sully and Dushane echoed Pacino and DeNiro in Heat but that might just be me. I think Jaq is the most satisfying answer for the final scene. Gives her closure (of a sort). Telling that whoever it was didn't take the bag?.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 23 November 2023 22:17 (one year ago)
