everyone who loves mr twin sister get in this thread
it's very long but 1) every song is good 2) it's a really beautiful shimmer to live inside of for an hour

OH MY GOD I POSTED THIS TO ILE BY ACCIDENT
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 19:34 (five years ago)
hell yeah ive been listening to this one a lot
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 19:38 (five years ago)
So many ways to go wrong with this sound, but this is 100% correct.
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 19:39 (five years ago)
Kinda reminds me of the last Rhye album
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 19:41 (five years ago)
listened to "tailwhip" yesterday via saidthegramaphones eoy list, top stuff
― nxd, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 08:45 (five years ago)
Picked this up today. Such a gorgeous record that totally justifies its length. Looking forward to getting to know it more.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 12 December 2019 03:30 (five years ago)
extremely surprised by how much I like this (Jordan otm about "ways to go wrong")
― rob, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 16:58 (five years ago)
when I put this on my boyfriend said it sounded like it was made in a lab to be exactly to my tastes, and he was right. I do wish the songwriting had a little more oomph to justify its long length but I think that would also be missing the point - it's meant to be textural and dreamy more than anything.
How legit is the story of their career as I've read it? They barely do press, they self-release everything and they've just toured hard to build a following and become successful by being so good at what they do. I'm sure I saw that they don't even have a manager.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 December 2019 10:02 (five years ago)
it's all very pleasant sounding but nothing really stands out to me about it despite being very fond of this sort of sound.

also can a mod move this thread to ILM? do we have that technology?
― the typo doer (Simon H.), Friday, 2 October 2020 17:11 (four years ago)
Sounds like more of the same. Can't say I mind.
― pomenitul, Friday, 2 October 2020 17:11 (four years ago)
after i made this thread a mod explained to me that moving threads across boards is the thing that breaks the entire borad
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2020 17:26 (four years ago)
I was the unwitting catalyst for such a seismic event once. I don't recommend it.

So smooth

Stoked for new stuff, Oncle Jazz is amazing
― brimstead, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 17:09 (four years ago)
"Tailwhip" initially obscured how mellow and strong the rest of the album is. Fun to play and have appreciation grow for other tracks.

ooh, sounding lovely so far, thanks! funny to release this right before going on tour (hoping that can be one of my first shows back)

the new album is incredibly awesome
i should make a thread for them that's actually on ilm
― STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 18:38 (three years ago)
thinking "Tree Among Shrubs" might be the one (they're all the one while they're playing, but still)

album is indeed really really good.
seems kinda tourable, too!

― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 17:23 (three years ago)
“5am Waltz” is probably my favorite one from this year’s album. It’s short, beautiful on the right headphones and kind of sounds inspired by Boards of Canada.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 October 2021 03:12 (three years ago)
Oh wtf this is not ILM, where am I?
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 October 2021 03:13 (three years ago)
I love this new album, more than the debut, and I've found it a real comfortable, relaxing listen - if this had came out a year earlier it would have probably been my lockdown go-to.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 7 October 2021 07:24 (three years ago)
found out about this band on here, the new album is a superfun synthpop delight, love it. 'carmen' is a tune of 2021 for me.
― Swanswans, Wednesday, 29 December 2021 13:59 (three years ago)
oh..and 'beezle', 80's electropop ripped in 2021 never sounded so good.
― Swanswans, Wednesday, 29 December 2021 14:06 (three years ago)
Their Tiny Desk Concert kind of blew my mind. Something about the way they sound made it very hard to visualize them as a band playing in a room. I imagined that there were a lot more electronic or programmed elements, but no, they are just very skilled yet supremely mellow musicians.

― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 29 December 2021 14:18 (three years ago)
cool, just listened to the intro track, supremely laid back, Air meets The Internet vibes. So polished, everyone finding the space in the groove, like you said, great musicians, completely on the same wavelength.

love both men i trust and mr twin sister but it seems like you’re talking about the latter, double swans
― grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 29 December 2021 15:32 (three years ago)
Goddammit, yes!! sorry about the confusion, fuckbiscuits!, both bands are great, true dat, lol...
― Swanswans, Wednesday, 29 December 2021 15:44 (three years ago)
I'm digging back through their discography... Headroom is also pretty great! A different vibe given the variety of singers, and it's more upbeat, but tracks like "Morse Code" and "Again" are as strong as anything else they've done
― Vinnie, Saturday, 16 July 2022 03:37 (two years ago)
Their show at the end of November at a large club in Austin is already sold out. I had no idea they were so popular. Pondering if I should buy a resale ticket.
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 05:05 (two years ago)
Still wondering how this happened. Show Me How has 172 MILLION listens on spotify. Was it featured on a TV show or put on a really popular playlist?
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 19 October 2022 00:42 (two years ago)
That's crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if they were ideal pandemic-era playlist fodder. Their Tiny Desk concert has over a million views.
I've lost count of the amount of times I thought a band was at the same level as similar niche, semi-underground artists, then I turn around and they're fucking huge (see also Khruangbin, Mitski, many more).

it's very popular on tiktok. seemingly used a lot as incidental music, which, who can blame people, it's an exquisite vibe
― comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 19 October 2022 18:10 (two years ago)
Idly speculating (ie hoping someone will do the research for me) how much a Spotify 'phenomenon' like 'Show Me How' - and attendant social media upticks etc - makes for a band? Like, is that enough to take your mum out for dinner, career-changing, life-changing or what?
― Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 19 October 2022 19:18 (two years ago)
Selling out one of the largest clubs in a city like Austin seems like a pretty big accomplishment for a band that is this chill and low key. Sunny Day Real Estate and Soccer Mommy both have shows coming up at the same club on subsequent weeks with tickets still on sale.
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 19 October 2022 19:29 (two years ago)
Was surprised to see they sold out the 930 Club in DC as well. Are they really exciting enough to see live?
― Chris L, Wednesday, 19 October 2022 20:05 (two years ago)
I don't know if exciting is the right word, but that tiny desk video really changed the way I think about them. I had it in my mind that this was maybe someone's bedroom beats project, I didn't really visualize them as a full band playing these tunes, so seeing them perform their songs and realizing the level of skill that each of the members brought to it was really impressive.
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 19 October 2022 20:11 (two years ago)
They sounded really good on their tour last fall. Saw them at a somewhat smaller club but it was packed and the crowd was kinda overpowering in its enthusiasm. Julien Baker probably the only artist I've seen where there was as wide a gulf between the quietness of the tunes and the audience's response.

"We’re over the moon to announce that we’re releasing not one but two full length albums: Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus. This is our biggest and proudest work yet. We will be hitting the road again this year across North America to bring the new songs to you! We can’t wait to share the new music IRL. Looking forward to see you <3"
― nxd, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 18:06 (three months ago)
That's a whole lot of material! It seems like they've been trying to diversify their sound over the last couple years, so hopefully they manage some interesting variety with these.
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2025 18:53 (three months ago)
pressing play on asinus. . .
― Constance Mischievous (Austin), Thursday, 20 March 2025 16:45 (two months ago)
pretty lifeless tbh
― sean gramophone, Thursday, 20 March 2025 16:47 (two months ago)
sounds like excellent am pop to me.
― Constance Mischievous (Austin), Thursday, 20 March 2025 17:06 (two months ago)
I'm feeling it, but it's definitely a sustained vibe of, idk, '70s folk/indie/dream pop rather than the tinges of r&b or uptempo experiments that they've done before.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 21 March 2025 15:38 (two months ago)
I like that they tried to shift their sound a little, but I still think it's pretty similar and not as good as what they've done before. still looking forward to the second album though
― Vinnie, Saturday, 22 March 2025 15:02 (two months ago)
It's really growing on me on this Saturday morning.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Saturday, 22 March 2025 15:32 (two months ago)
yeah, generally agreed: it's good, not great. does suffer a bit from sameness, but nothing is in poor taste. i like the whimsical tone of "heavenly flow" and have very much settled on this album being a modern adult contempo sort of thing. not really motivated to revisit the whole thing regularly but will probably do so sporadically in anticipation of the second half.
it did prompt me to check out their forever live sessions albums, which i had previously neglected. volume 2 it seems just hit streaming in february. no demerit on the new record of course, but i'm finding the live in studio albums a bit more entertaining.
― Constance Mischievous (Austin), Saturday, 22 March 2025 17:31 (two months ago)
The 2nd one is now out.
― whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 03:35 (three weeks ago)
I like Equus Caballus way more than Equus Asinus, seems they saved all the faster tempo songs for this one. it's less a departure in sound than Equus Asinus but the songs play more to their strengths
― Vinnie, Friday, 9 May 2025 15:21 (two weeks ago)
a few of the songs from asinus have wormed their way into my consciousness ("the landkeeper" most notably). i should return to the full album. excited to hear the second half tho
― gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Friday, 9 May 2025 15:30 (two weeks ago)
the standout tracks for me are the same ones that were released as singles last year, not sure if the rest lives up to those, but I don't hate anything here
― whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 9 May 2025 15:45 (two weeks ago)
Wow, I didn't know there was a double album incoming. I guess this is their '80s r&b/quiet storm album, huh.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 9 May 2025 21:02 (two weeks ago)
Ooooh just listening to this one. I’m floored. Wasn’t mindblown by the other album released earlier (it’s pleasant but not really my thing), but this one sounded fantastic on first listen. That bass sound.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 11 May 2025 01:44 (two weeks ago)
yep, this smashes. first one is the outtakes, i reckon. really dig the roller disco/fleetwood pop vibe. don't care that they're revisiting familiar songs, especially when those songs are some of their best post-oncle jazz. any excuse to bring "ring of past" back into rotation is a good one imo.
― Constance Mischievous (Austin), Sunday, 11 May 2025 20:22 (two weeks ago)
So many fast (yet feather light) songs in the second half, I love it.
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 12 May 2025 21:27 (two weeks ago)
Very consistent album but "Another Stone" is killing me today. Might be my favorite song they've ever done
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 13 May 2025 12:14 (two weeks ago)
yeah "another stone" is great. "carried away" too
