sorry, i realise its not really a funny topic but i still cant help this silly smile at the thought of millions of americans lining up at the local post office or something, kind of like a weird noahs ark vision.
or isnt it going to happen after all, i havent heard of it for a few days since the idea was spoken of on the news here.

i am proud of my smallpox innoculation scar. it meant that i couldn't get a tattoo on my left shoulder.

I have that big scar too, but I understand that people around my age were among the last to have that...wasn't there some new way of administering it that was less, uh, damaging? Or, did they just stop administering it?

I never post on the political threads for a real reason, but anyway, here goes: hell no, I'm not going to get an innoculation. What the hell do you think is in it? Of course smallpox was wiped out, you don't need a "boost". If the US govt thinks a smallpox outbreak is coming, who do you think will be the ones starting it? Terrorists???

Supposedly the U.S. government has drawn up a plan for mass smallpox inoculations that will involve massive lineups at stadiums and similar large public arenas.

I also was vaccinated against smallpox as a child -- in the U.S. doctors stopped routine inoculation some time around 1970, but my family and I were going to live in West Berlin for a year and a half.

They HAD just stopped doing it, but my dad apparently insisted that I have one and even went as far as to sign some kind of release papers before they would go ahead. So I do have the scar on my left shoulder. It's weird though - instead of the little 'crater' it usually leaves, I have a raised bump. Supposedly that means that I'd have had an especially bad reaction if the real thing had ever come along.

I remember reading that Richard Preston article a few years ago about a possible smallpox outbreak and freaking right the fuck out. So, yeah, I'd line up, although the plans I've read about have indicated they'd simply treat it like any other hot zone, although possibly emergency room workers might be vaccinated, since they'd be the first (well, second) to come in contact if it ever did come down. I never quite get the impulse of anti-vaccination people, it reminds me of people who are convinced that barcodes or social security numbers are the mark of the beast. I got my anthrax shot, although apparently the way it works it's been so long that it's irrelevant.
