Gianduja (Piedmontese: giandoja [dʒaŋˈdʊja]) is a sweet chocolate spread containing about 30% hazelnut paste, invented in Turin during Napoleon's regency (1796–1814).

History

The Continental System – imposed by Napoleon in 1806 – prevented British goods from entering European ports under French control, putting a strain on cocoa supplies.[2] A chocolatier in Turin named Michele Prochet extended the little chocolate he had by mixing it with hazelnuts from the Langhe hills south of Turin.[3] Based on gianduja, Turin-based chocolate manufacturer Caffarel invented gianduiotto in 1852.[4]

It takes its name from Gianduja, a Carnival and marionette character who represents the archetypal Piedmontese, a native of the Italian region where hazelnut confectionery is common.

Hazelnuts, because of the taste which works well with chocolate, the texture and because I have fond memories of picking and eating them when I was a child. Nutella doesn’t count.

Just about all of these rock, but I don't think I've ever had any of the chocolate covered seeds. Am I missing out and can I get them at Trader Joe's?

hazelnuts is indeed a glaring omission, my bad. I am personally a pistachio guy, though all of them are great in my book except maybe sunflower seeds which I prefer as-is.

I only really like chocolate with nuts. macadamias are my favorite but all of them are great

I'm also allergic to hazelnuts, so they're dead out. With milk chocolate, peanuts. With dark chocolate, almonds. These are solely matters of taste, than which none excels mine, but all are equal.

Voted peanuts, but milk chocolate only. It's outside the scope of this poll, but lately I've been buying dark chocolate covered mini pretzels from Walgreens and they fucking rule. I usually buy a bag of dark chocolate ones and a bag of yogurt covered ones and mix them.

yeah milk v dark is very much an important metric here. I don't really care about pistachios in milk chocolate. in dark chocolate they're incredible and in white chocolate they're sublime

for me chocolate is most definitely improved by combination with nuts. I like nuts on their own just fine, but not pure chocolate so much

It's hard to rate the nut combinations, but macadamias, peanuts, almonds, and hazelnuts with chocolate are all really good imo

as filbert for extra confusion.

Almonds, while not unpleasant, are somehow simultaneously bland, oversweet, and overwhelming to other flavours they're paired with. Plus environmental disaster! Few things are more disappointing than buying somehting that claims to be pistachio and ends up being bulked out with almond, which is a totally different flavour.

Having never had chocolate cashew before (favourite 'flavour' is roasted with salt and black pepper) I have just tried some anfd they are awesome.

à propro de honey salted almond Ritter Sport, I just had a Lindt almond-flour de sel 31% chocolat noir & it was excellent. obv different sans honey plus salt but extremely good. Lindt is the chocolate marque that's risen in my estimation the most in the last couple of years.

I took this poll as a Ritter proxy and voted almond too. The marzipan one is also a go-to

honey salted almond, rum trauben nuss (hazelnuts! also I haven't seen a rum and nut without raisins in this country, alas, so I didn't know that was a thing) and marzipan are p. much my top 3 Ritter Sports, probably in that order, but only because for a while the local shop only did marzipan out of those three and I ate so. many.

think I only managed to buy one of them but the limited edition salty tortilla chip one was good too, if rather off-topic for the chocolate nut thread
