ITT a 'stan' is a celebrity who is the target of overzealous or obsessive fans

I think maybe this originated with teens (and/or non-native English speakers) believing that a 'stan account' was an account devoted to a famous person know as a 'stan'? as the Eminem song fades from the public consciousness over the next 10 to 20 years, this will become the dominant usage of the term, and anyone who objects will be derided as a pedant/oldster. https://i.imgur.com/2lS548Z.png

if y’all don’t go vote rn- I REFUSE TO LET THIS FANDOM LOOK LIKE CLOWNS HAVING OUR STAN PREFORM AND NOT TAKE HOME ANY AWARDS #BillieonAMAs pic.twitter.com/hGZ2KgjX7G

ok but FR why y'all attacking that joana girl / being rude to her stans literally what did she even so for u all to go out mocking her merch and degrading her in general? isnt emma chamberlain, our stan, the most unproblematic and kind person ever so why do u all feel the need

— 𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒂 (@gIcssiers) June 2, 2019

just a reminder that drama is a big no no and that we should all be spreading nothing but positivity and love <33 our stans would not want to see the fandom fighting!! okay i rest my case byeeeeeeee

i think my favourite part of stan twitter is when one of our stans replies to us and all of our mutuals just replies with our names in all caps

Wait for some fans get mad and angry at #GRAMMYs after this, if their stan didn't win anything. But I think they deserve to at least have one? But also don't mind, cause them will get brave. 🤡

y’all literally talk shit and make fun of jacks mental health and you still call yourself a fan. true fans don’t bring their stan down when they’re going through a rough time.

— dani (@ithurtsIikeheII) January 21, 2020

i don't get why kpop idols have to apologize for dating someone they like/love to their fans. it's common sense for fans to understand that their "stans" or idols' life are not theirs to begin with. they're not your puppets that you can project to, they are actual humans!!

i read this as like... the target of our stanning? like, "our love billie eilish is no saint either." our stans are the ones stanned by us. i don't have the english grammar vocabulary to describe this. i'm not even sure i'm reading this differently from the original post now, but it seems different than just "a 'stan' is a celebrity who is the target of overzealous or obsessive fans." i think a stan account here would still be the account of the people stanning their stan, rather than the account owned by the target of the stanning.

Stan. It was you? Damn..

prouders, Thursday, 30 January 2020 14:51 (five years ago)

I'm a stan for X
I stan X
I stan my stan

I'm a lover of X
I love X
I love my love

This seems sort of analogous, but not quite. The verb "love" denotes a relationship between a subject ("lover") and object ("love"). With this new usage of "stan," the subject and object are the exact same word. That is, someone who stans isn't a "stanner"; they are themselves a stan. Or maybe this will change.

jfc, am I really not allowed to have one thread where I'm free to stan my stans with impunity?

So on this new way of using "stan", Stan from the Eminem song "Stan" stanned Eminem, making Eminem Stan's stan?

JRN, Tuesday, 25 August 2020 01:11 (five years ago)

logic checks out, but you probably weren't aware that the song was based on a true story
