Very short ramp on this poll in tribute to this year's insanely accelerated schedule.

🚶‍♂️💨 (Eric H.), Sunday, 2 February 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

I've actually seen six out of nine--percentage-wise, that's gotta be the most for me this century, maybe since the '70s. Little Women and Hollywood about even.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 February 2020 01:38 (five years ago)

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which actually was the best film of the year.
(my beloved Image Book premiered in 2018)

flappy bird, Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

Have seen four; Little Women by a nose over Irishman and Marriage Story.

But not voting.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:26 (five years ago)

I'll go ahead and say it as a non-Brit, 1917 isn't "that" "bad."

🚶‍♂️💨 (Eric H.), Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:29 (five years ago)

But Morbs, if you don't vote, where will the balance be against my vote for the Tarantino?

🚶‍♂️💨 (Eric H.), Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:30 (five years ago)

Parasite should take it. Irishman or 1917 will.

Darth Bambi (Sanpaku), Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:35 (five years ago)

on average a decent crop of movies, by Oscar standards, although a couple that i liked pretty well still seem not quite "best picture" material in my mind. an "anything but Joker" option would basically sum me up.

haven't seen marriage story or ford v. ferrari yet... might be catching the former tomorrow, might see the latter someday. but if it bears even the slightest resemblance to the conversation about it, i can't imagine it being even in the top half here. as of right now it'd be parasite for me but not voting yet.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 2 February 2020 02:40 (five years ago)

the only one I haven't seen is Ford v. Ferrari. this is a pretty good year actually.
1 utterly vacuous prefab 'prestige picture' (1917)
1 horrible, offensive, and naive failure (JoJo Rabbit)
1 weird one: an aesthetic mediocrity that was the most politically salient American film of the year (Joker)
1 masterpiece (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
1 movie that I didn't like but has its merits (Marriage Story)
3 really great movies (Parasite, The Irishman, Little Women)

Maybe I'll actually watch it

flappy bird, Sunday, 2 February 2020 05:10 (five years ago)

Parasite, with zero hesitation

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Sunday, 2 February 2020 05:38 (five years ago)

haven't seen a single one of these yet, no vote from me

Dan S, Sunday, 2 February 2020 05:41 (five years ago)

I don't get the difference between "really great" movies" and "masterpieces."

Little Women and maaayybe Parasite are the only ones we'll discuss next year

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 2 February 2020 05:48 (five years ago)

the saw those three movies once and really liked them. I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 5 times when it was in theaters and last month, at home. I cry every time. A miracle that reaches heights of the medium itself.

xp

flappy bird, Sunday, 2 February 2020 05:50 (five years ago)

I saw 7 of the 9,

would rank em

1. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
2. The Irishman
3. Marriage Story
4. Parasite
5. Little Women
6. Jojo Rabbit
7. 1917

They're all great movies except 1917, which is very beautifully directed/choreographed but p slight in other areas

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 2 February 2020 06:00 (five years ago)

my oscar prediction is that JOKER is gonna be nominated for best picture & I'm gonna get pissed off because there's gonna come a point where I've seen all the other 9 nominees & I'm gonna go "*fine*, i'll watch the JOKER movie" & it will suck ass & i'm gonna get pissed off again

Ash Is Purest White was the best film of 2019

Dan S, Sunday, 2 February 2020 06:08 (five years ago)

I've only seen 3. Little Women, Once Upon, and The Irishman. All 6/10 or 7/10. I suppose I'll watch another Noah Baumbach white people movie at some point because I have netflix.

wasdnuos (abanana), Sunday, 2 February 2020 06:15 (five years ago)

First year I've seen most of these before the Oscars - yet to see Jojo or 1917. Parasite was the best but I was surprisingly impressed by Ford v. Ferrari. Very enjoyable, good pacing. Good list of movies overall. Joker was the only one I didn't care much for

Vinnie, Sunday, 2 February 2020 06:27 (five years ago)

Yet to watch the car one or the Tarantino one. I kind of think marriage story might win - it’s about an actor and a director. Parasite should get it, will probably get best foreign instead.

Semantics aside, I was transported. 6 times. Call it whatever you like, I felt the same way about The Image Book (the movie OUATIH reminded me most of). They both caught me off guard, the Godard less so, but QT hasn't made a movie I really loved since Kill Bill, and even that doesn't even approach how I feel about OUATIH. Nowhere close. The adjectives and superlatives are never-ending, but what else can I say? Not much. I understand why some people don't like, why others aren't interested, but for me, it's an alchemical experience. Call that what you will.

has anyone on the planet actually watched ford v ferrari? could there possibly be any reason to?

$223 million of viewers worldwide. the international Quiet Dad demographic: a very satisfying picture for people who don't need to have anything to say about their viewing experiences afterward. it shoots racecars well, has a bunch of men doing mid-century jaw performing, uses or simulates existing light in a way that's refreshing to see (just checked, and Panavision made bespoke anamorphic lenses for the production's HD cameras), balances a range of buddy / rival tensions just about competently. attempts to gesture at some "maybe underdog narratives only exist because of the strictures of capitalism" themes but is terrified of actually having a point, let alone considering that glorifying motor vehicle production & wildly recreational burning of fossil fuels is plainly endorsing a death cult in 2019.
