Is there a thread like this for all the various movie polls? I know the detritus thread each year has links to all the other ones, but I meant the genre and decade polls.― clemenza, Thursday, February 6, 2020 10:24 PM (nineteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglinkI realize the movie polls don't follow back-to-back like the artist ones do, but it would be nice if there were some place where we could float ideas about movie polls and gauge interest (and let folks know they're going on). There's one I've been thinking about for a while, and it will be some time before I can even entertain the idea, but I wouldn't currently know how I would even go about seeing if people would be into it.― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Thursday, February 6, 2020 10:32 PM (eleven minutes ago) bookmarkflaglinkGreat idea--start a thread. Anyone with an idea can test it out there--hopefully limited to whether there's interest or not, saving the this-belongs-no-it-doesn't arguments for the actual poll. I think a cumulative results thread would be useful too; some of those movie threads, like the comedy and horror, are really hard to load when you want to check something.― clemenza, Thursday, February 6, 2020 10:40 PM (three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

The idea I was interested in eventually floating is a Teen/High School movie poll, but I'm completing-a-dissertation away from having the time to do that now. Would still be open to hearing thoughts on it, though.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 03:49 (five years ago)
There was a decent documentary on the genre a few years ago (can't remember the title)...At least a couple of my favourite films ever fit, so sure. There'd have to be school scenes, though, to keep eligibility manageable.
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 04:01 (five years ago)
Yeah, I feel like I'd be willing to open it up to anything with an adolescent protagonist. This would cover not only the usual picks--Rebel Without a Cause, John Hughes, Clueless--but also things like The 400 Blows, The Last Picture Show, Halloween or the Little Women of someone's choice. Lotsa recent quality films fit the bill here, too.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 04:13 (five years ago)
Take a couple of nights, finish the dissertation, start the poll.
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 04:14 (five years ago)
My supervisor wishes.

Best horror movies!
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 7 February 2020 05:17 (five years ago)
Best directorial debuts
Best depictions of (city) on film. We could start with NYC maybe since there's such a wealth of material there.

I'd love to see maybe like a more restrictive 'sci-fi/horror from the advent of cinema through the 1950s' poll but I feel like it might suffer from lack of interest.

I'm going to start pitching polls like they do in The Player: "It'll be like the horror poll meets the road-movie poll, but funny, and with flying saucers."

Just gonna throw these out there (I don't wanna run any of them):

Would Marx Bros. comedies count as musicals?
― Miami weisse (WmC), Friday, 7 February 2020 16:54 (five years ago)
I don't see why not
― Οὖτις, Friday, 7 February 2020 16:57 (five years ago)
I'd say any fictional film where members of the cast perform two or more songs would qualify.
― Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 7 February 2020 16:58 (five years ago)
Green Room? Total musical.
(I knew it would take me like thirty seconds to think of examples that nullified my criteria.)
― Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:00 (five years ago)
Musicals, yes please! That would be a great combo of old and new stuff to discover or rep for. And tbh I don't mind including things that are a bit looser in it.
― emil.y, Friday, 7 February 2020 17:04 (five years ago)
Political thrillers
I'd have to check, but I'm guessing at least a third of the films that placed in the political-films poll could be classified as such--not sure the results would be appreciably different (and it was a struggle to get 20 voters).
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 17:05 (five years ago)
movie stars.

political-films poll
ah sorry I forgot about this one. I didn't participate cuz it felt like too broad a category to me
― Οὖτις, Friday, 7 February 2020 17:14 (five years ago)
It was...maybe narrowing would actually generate more interest.
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 17:23 (five years ago)
I'd love a musicals poll.

I would also second a musicals one.
Also: cinematographers.

Individual directors' filmographies? (A brief search turns up previous George Cukor and Orson Welles polls.)

Noir is a good one
― Οὖτις, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:45 (five years ago)
The three I'm most interested in are cryptsicko's high-school poll, omar's film noir/crime poll, and Eric's cinematographer poll (most interested in individual films, rather than individual bodies of work, which I'd have a hard time weighing). Objectively, musicals seems to be the most popular (no feel for them at all, I'd have to sit that one out).
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:51 (five years ago)
I'm confused as to how a cinematographer poll would work - best cinematographers, or a films with best cinematography?
― Οὖτις, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:56 (five years ago)
musicals yes!and please revive the crime poll, there was good energy in the noms thread!

Not film, and yet another thing I currently in no position to run myself, but the current Modern Family poll just made me wonder if ILX has ever done a sitcom poll.
