I don't like making statements with my brand choices. It's my one concession to the No Logo ethic.

My brief experience of MacOS X has been unsatisfactory, probably because my copy is Japanese. But it also seems slow, and to have replaced a logical interface with big idiot-proof graphic gizmos like the ballooning dock with its pretty 'stamp collector' graphics. But then again, what I'm calling 'logical' may just be whatever I'm used to.
I think the pleasures of the Mac are textural, sensual ones. Macs appeal to the visually-literate and aesthetically fussy, whereas PCs are for people who think style and design matter less than price (and being on the same page as 95% of the rest of the world). I liked Eco's description of Macs as Catholic and PCs as Protestant. PCs are puritan- capitalist the same way it's puritan-capitalist to gobble down a sandwich instead of taking your time over lunch. PCs are about necessity, Macs are about pleasure. Many people who have PCs at work have Macs at home.
One reason my website is so huge and interesting (I hope) is that I love to potter about on my Mac. Today I was editing sound files for a recording project using an excellent shareware program called Felt Tip Sound Studio. Work and play on the Mac are pretty much the same thing.

But I believe some of the laptops are wrongly configured and/or wired, and freeze up a lot, also. You shd look into getting a straight replacement.

I have the new iBook too. I just put a Bjork Vespertine sticker on the back. The screen is a million times better than the old iBook screens, and it's a lot lighter. I do take mine to bed with me, and make it read articles to me (Bruce, High Quality voice) from the New York and London Reviews of Books. Am asleep long before it is.

Little things like this are why I put up with its habit of crashing on startup 90% of the time. Come to think of it, we're not that different that way.
