Barbara, Jerichow and another about to expire from Criterion, I think.

Yella, I think.

Gespenster is the best

I've seen 6 of the features; the four (beginning w/ Jerichow) that are well known globally, plus Yella and Wolfsburg. No bad ones there; I think Barbara and Transit are best.

I've seen the last three and loved each successive one a little more

Really like Barbara, but then again I’m a sucker for Ostalgie.

Phoenix I care for least because Vertigo politics bore me

Phoenix will be the only left on Criterion tomorrow.

Something really special about Barbara. Love the pace of it. Reminds me of some of those slow and steady Martin Beck novels.

one year passes...

Watched Undine last night. It was good. The magic-realist elements were an interesting move away from Petzold's (deceptive) naturalism, but I thought were integrated fairly well. Reminded me tone-wise a bit of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, in integrating the fantastical with the matter-of-fact world. My favorites of his are still Phoenix and Transit, although I haven't seen Barbara.

The only one I’ve seen is “The State I Am In”.

I went to the movies to watch Transit and somehow missed one crucial detail and thereafter didn't have a single clue what was happening :) I still liked it though. I adore Franz Rogowski.

I should re-watch Undine, which I htought his only disaster .

Finally saw Transit.

Seems like Gespenster/Ghosts is not available at all for streaming as far as I can see, although most others are.

Hmm, haven’t seen Yella yet.

Really liked Yella, plan to watch The State I’m In before it leaves MUBI.

Something really touching about the fact that Jeanne is often seen wearing a shirt that says Diego Maradonna in The State I Am In.

Went straight into Jerichow without any prep - what a great movie! I immediately went into Transit and felt letdown but I think that's my problem, should I immediately try again or try another movie first?

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 11 March 2025 07:17 (five months ago)

Go for the earlier ones - they are really wonderful.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 11 March 2025 08:42 (five months ago)

My favourites are 'Die innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In)', 'Jerichow', 'Barbara' and Petzold's most recent film 'Roter Himmel (Afire)'. Didn't like Undine very much.

Wry & Slobby (Portsmouth Bubblejet), Tuesday, 11 March 2025 15:56 (five months ago)

Afire was my introduction to him, i loved it and sought out Undine which greatly disappointed by comparison. I take it I shouldn’t be put off?

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 11 March 2025 19:43 (five months ago)

Just watched Undine and I liked it, although I can see why you might not, the plot and the symbolism were perhaps a bit overdetermined. The leads were charismatic enough to hold it all together though, I thought. Have seen and liked Transit and Phoenix, will continue with my Petzold journey.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 12 March 2025 10:32 (five months ago)

Undine is my least favorite Petzold. I got a kick out of Afire, though.

So nasty.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 12 March 2025 13:15 (five months ago)

I liked Undine and Afire, but the "Love in Times of Oppressive Systems" trilogy is probably his peak. (I haven't seen his earlier films yet to be sure.) And that trilogy just got better with each film - Transit alone is one of my absolute favorites in recent years.

Went with Phoenix next and it feels like a minor masterpiece.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 16 March 2025 05:01 (five months ago)

I told my wife the premise of Phoenix once and it sounded so stupid coming out of my mouth, but I loved the movie.
