say something nice about moths

is it possible to get lyrical about little insects that sleep by day and at night eat the best bits of your shirts and sweaters?

"Over this odd world, this half of the world that's dark now, I have to hunt a thing that lives on tears"

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

moths are CUTE! and not half so flashy as butterflies, of course

Gordon (Gordon), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

No, sorry. Our old keyboardist used to be almost pyschotically afraid of moths, and I think she infected me with her phobia. Especially when Frannie from Travis start blubbing on about how much he hated them on the VH1 Storytellers thing. "They KNOW!!! They KNOW when you HAAAATE them, so they come AFTER yooouuuu!!!" {cue much swatting around his head)

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

they are better metaphor insects than cockroaches!! (NB. kafka's story is about a beetle, as any proper translator fule knows)

jones (actual), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but one man's DUNG BEETLE is another man's SCARAB, GOTH SUPREME EGYPTIAN RULER OF THE UNIVERRRRSE!!!

Every summer Colorado is attacked by a flock of moths from Kansas. I hate the little buggers. Let them die. However, something nice about them--they are fun to kill.

Mandee, Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm w/ Kate - moths give me the creeps. Most terrifying film ever made - 'The Blood Beast Terror'!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

This flat is stupidly full of moths. Though they haven't affected my grannie's KILT yet, which is the first thing moths usually go for. They're too busy working on Landlady's JUNK collection. I fear for her books... They do not provoke homicidal killing rages like sight of spiders and my mum, but I usually have to put them out of their (read: my) misery. Yuck.

(It took me quite some time to realise post-loo break that i had switched the CD before I left, and was nolonger listening to DDB's but actually Crystals.)

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the big hairy ones always dive bomb me, which kind of puts me off them as 'nice' creatures. plus my friend told me when we were 10 that they go in your ears so for years i had a 'moth in the ear'phobia. ( we were 10, ok )

but apart from the ear thing and the dive bombing i like moths. unless they get in the car and fly at me when im driving.

donna (donna), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

What about June Bugs? AKA, those big black crunchy bugs which fly in through windows to terrify Kate... not cockroachs, even bigger than cockraoches and scary and WINGED and black, and head straight for goths' decolette, as happened to my poor girlfriend when some lardass redneck boy was taking her home ... ooh, ooh, icky, her breasts crushed the poor bug, didn't know who to feel scaried for, the crushed bug or the goth girlfriend for having bug down bra... YUCK!!!

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

There were a brace of moths hiding in the pantry, so alas they had to be slain and their eggs destroyed. Our lovely food, ruined by them!

Irene Moon likes moths, so they must rule.

who is she then?

this just don't work. And now that Stephen Jay Gould's dead there is no-one to tell us why. Damn.

But anyway, they have nice feathery antennae, in contrast to butterflies' horrible knobbly ones.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 10 November 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

and if you touch them they leave magic glow-dust on your fingers (which actually saddens me somehow - I don't want to take it away from them)

Irene Moon does performance art science lectures, generally revolving around insects.

Dave Fischer, Monday, 11 November 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

the big problem with moths is that they come from caterpillars, which are the worst things in the world. and then they turn into moth and LAY EGGS TO MAKE MORE CATERPILLARS. they are evil embodied and the only nice thing about moths is that they, themselves, are not caterpillars at the same time as being moths.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 11 November 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, caterpillars are not the worst things in the world. When I was little I though those big fuzzy Wooly Bear caterpillers were the cutest things ever. If we're talking Tomato Horn Worms on the other hand, you may have a point.

this is my bedroom light:

http://www.dirty.org/~minna/images/light-new.jpg

i've had a big moth living in my room for the past few nights but it doesn't come and bother me by swooping around my reading lamp, it stays and cavorts with its friends on my ceiling light.

Jordan, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

i dislike the ones that eat my sweaters, but other than that cool and fluffy. The man who lives opposite my step-mother's holiday cottage is a moth expert and he has a number of no-kill traps hanging outside and is only too happy to show you all kinds of exciting moths.

Ed, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

They seriously skeeve me out. Least favorite insect next to roaches. They have a habit of flying right into you.

jordy (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

Did that "say something nice about morbs" thread ever happen?

StanM, Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

don't think so.

my parents' house has a hidden colony of clothesmoths, despite various different kinds of mothball - and spray cans of DOOM - in full employ. They are very flat compared to the more photographed moths - they seem to jump more than fly - and their wings dissolve into gold dust on your fingers. i quite like them, despite the holes in my woollens, how little and drab they are.

lotta moth hate here, bu i kinda think these things are bros. i mean, they don't really do much good around the house or anything, but they can chill on the wall like few other and generally have pretty dope fashion

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i've always been weirded out by moth fear. they seem to be okay. some people get all freaked out though. i would like to have them hang out without it being a big deal. they could even eat some wool or something.
