big fan of the varve, love this description of them:

a pair of thin layers of clay and silt of contrasting colour and texture which represent the deposit of a single year (summer and winter) in a lake

chlorite is downright smut:

chlorite minerals are green in color, have a foliated appearance, perfect cleavage, and an oily to soapy feel

kaolinite feels like the rockist answer

Dunty Reggae party πŸŽ‰ (Noodle Vague), Monday, 2 March 2020 12:43 (six years ago)

probably acceptable to be rockist in a geology poll tbh

ymo sumac (NickB), Monday, 2 March 2020 12:44 (six years ago)

montmarillionite sounds a bit prog

ymo sumac (NickB), Monday, 2 March 2020 12:45 (six years ago)

Montmorillonite, a member of the smectite group, is a 2:1 clay, meaning that it has two tetrahedral sheets of silica sandwiching a central octahedral sheet of alumina

wankers

The settling of this clay-size sediment occurs primarily by the formation of clay aggregates by flocculation and by their incorporation into fecal pellets by pelagic organisms.

The china clay deposits in Cornwall are the largest in the world and have been worked since William Cookworthy first discovered it at Tregonning Hill in 1746. 120 million tons of china clay have been extracted, but reserves in the ground will last at least another hundred years.

Cornwall has got bare clay!

calzino, Thursday, 9 September 2021 10:26 (four years ago)

I refuse to believe there isn't a bigger deposit of china clay in the ground somewhere in China

calzino, Thursday, 9 September 2021 10:31 (four years ago)

or maybe even in France where in geological time Cornwall used to belong

calzino, Thursday, 9 September 2021 10:32 (four years ago)

hm
