I started watching Utena with my partner like three or four years ago but she tapped out and I didn’t go on on my own but even the 6 or so episodes I watched are sufficient for me to say: yes, of course, Utena, my god

what finally got me to pull the trigger with this show was discovering the creator/director was also the director of sailor moon s (and super s, he left the show after that bc of creative frustration with the studio, which bears out in the final product)

i bought a subscription to funimation ($7.99/mo) just to watch the recent remasters, it looks reallllly good

better than eva imo, then again i've only watched like 5 anime series total so...

I watched it ages ago and liked it, but it wouldn't be in my top tier like Eva. The world-building and costumes and fights and music and the overall style is great, but like a lot of anime series, I wish it were pared down some

the repeated sequence of utena ascending the stairs to that weird choral metal song... so sick

and then the trip-hop beat when utena pulls the sword out of anthy

it's like everything i've ever loved all mashed up together

what's the gist of this one

the repeated sequences for effect is ikuhara's trademark thing as a director yeah. kinda the same root idea as magical girl transformations but expanded further

i have no idea how to elevator pitch this series so someone else will have to try, sorry xp

lush artistic reimainging of shojo anime, the framing of which is this weird arthurian power struggle among the gorgeous genderfucked members of a student body council. it is gaaaaaAAAAaaaaAAAAyyyYYYyyy from the very jump; utena wears a boy's school uniform because she both prefers it and wants to become a prince who saves beautiful princesses. but also the staging is so gorgeous, there are scenes in this that make choices regarding camera and perspective that i'd expect more readily from idk powell and pressburger films. director kunihiko ikuhara is a self-professed david lynch fan, etc. five episodes in and i can already tell it's a magical girl anime in the way eva is a giant robot anime

i tried. it's hard. it's very enigmatic; it plays with tropes but from a great distance, as it's totally off in its own fucking world

i've only seen the movie, which was wild. this is on my forever TV to-watch-list, like Twin Peaks

i mean i basically understand the plot mechanics but the storytelling is very oblique and unyielding and i love it

i so look forward to the shadowplay sequence in every episode. always hilarious

ok i've got two episodes left. i don't think i could ever like a show "better than eva" but i certainly accept that argument, it's at least as great

my only gripe is that out of 39 episodes, three are recaps, albeit the framing of the second is entertaining (a nanami-only recap episode is sort of a hilarious idea on its own), and the third recap episode is extremely important to the narrative and contains some of the shows most... harrowing scenes? let's just say i do not like being in akio's perspective

otherwise every episode and plot development has something going for it

comparing this to eva makes no sense anyway other than to say they're both classic 90s anime that have aged well

nah it makes total sense to me

they ARE very different still

but there's a similar subversion going on and they have similar depths. both are ultimately about reasons to exist + the complexity of relationships with others and how these relationships reflect one's self-worth, albeit maybe not as forcefully as eva

i watched the movie while very stoned and i have to say it's my favorite piece of art in human history

the emotional and sexual manipulation in this show feels extremely real and harrowing despite it taking place in a complete fantasy realm

Has anyone seen the new Gundam show, The Witch from Mercury? I just watched Episode 1, and never mind allusions or references to Utena - this was practically a goddamn remake of the first episode!

Anyway I recently rewatched the middle story arc and it still completely rules

yeah its v intentional & cheeky to make it clear what type of story it is but it doesnt really have much in common after that first episode. fun show though
