i'm staring at my Star Wars, Iron Maiden, and Slayer Funkos, and realize I might have a problem.

have the Ghost one on the way.

they're just so much fun and inexpensive.

I bought Marty McFly and Doc Brown several years ago. Meant to pick up the Bob's Burgers ones when they came out, but never did and now they're expensive. I'll likely just stick with the two I have.

These are my “brony” I guess in that I reach for them far too often as a metonym for the wider “nerd culture” of horrible baby shit but... i can’t help it. Grown ups spend money to fill their houses with these ugly ass things!

A few years ago I bought one because they had released a Big Trouble in Little China set. It was me and my wife's favorite movie and I wanted to pick her up the Gracie Law one. So I walked up to my local comic shop and asked "so where are the Big Trouble in Little China bobbleheads?" And the guy said, nicely but still as a corrective, "they're not bobbleheads, they're Funko POP!" And right then and there I decided I was just gonna get that one.

I really hate the black eyes. It's like everybody is turned into the Other Mother from Coraline.

I find them ugly but wouldn't judge other people for it, aesthetic preferences differ, but... ugh, they're everywhere and so fetishised by people who like them. There's definitely a funko pop type of person and they're terrible.

On a related note, I was at my local comic shop and saw some Misfits action figures and had a fleeting thought that if I was going to shell out for some useless plastic crap, these were pretty cool. Then I saw the price tag was close to $20 so I kept on walking.

They are bad and u shd feel bad, sorry

i don't mind them that much but i do wish that the base style was better, since we have to see it in thousands of variations. hate the black eyes and lack of articulation

Nendoroids are much better - they also cost about 5x the price

Although the funnies, which I like, always tilted toward macrocephaly, the benefit lay in a broader canvas for facial expressions. With these thingamabobblehead breathren, that benefit recedes into cubed monotony. Dud!

have to say that part of my annoyance at these things is that other people have this sort of disposable income, and i really fucking don't.

the real magic of Funko is that they've managed to license every possible thing anyone could like in the history of time. hard to resist!

Largely, for me, it's the absolutely egregious uselessness of them and all other action figures not designed to be used as toys. If you are spending your money on a pricey, distorted likeness of a character from some show or movie, whose sole function is to be owned and sit on a shelf, you really ought to question what you're doing with your money. Apologies to those this view will offend, but I don't back away from it.

The existence of chase figures is a strike against these - I've met people who set up businesses so they could buy cases wholesale from NECA to try to score the rare ones.

10 bucks can buy enough books, music and other things that are totally filled with actual content. These are just bad sculptures with little technique or ideas. 10 bucks is actually quite a lot of money.

I wrestle with paying £30 to £140 for books occasionally but they're usually filled with good stuff.

i have more media, including music, tv, and movies, than I could consume in a year atm

if anything, the streaming age has really devalued the monetary value of media for me

(and I purchase all of my music, albeit digitally)

When I reached that point I decided it was time to ask what charities I wanted to support more. I realise that sounds sanctimonious but it’s worth considering imo.

I think these are ugly and I don't collect anything (including books or media now) but the "they're bad because you could have spent that $10 on X" is an incredibly dumb recursive loop that leads to becoming a Boomer whining about avocado toast.

Yeah I have more stuff than I can handle too (that was part of my reasoning for buying £30-£40 books on a regular basis) but I just can't be at peace with ten dollars for those. Sorry to sound judgy but I'd rather people spent money on almost anything else. Buy another album, book or film if only just for anticipating the possibility of getting into it, even just admiring the cover or giving talented people money.

nah, it's not a contest man. I didn't take offense. I'm not rich, but I'm comfortable so I donate where I can but I'm hardly like a leading world philanthropist. I was just lucky enough to be able to keep working at my regular salary during this crazy time and not have to spend as much while in lockdown.

Their headquarters is not far from where I live and it is very awesome. A friend who worked in their IT dept quit though due some weird behavior from his mgmt, so there's that. But I own more than a few and am glad to have them around.
