I was in my University's library today, and on one of the shelves I found a CD of Boards of Canada's first LP. It was in the literature section, right around Fitzgerald. I already had a copy of it, but it's nice to have the original.
Should I have turned it in at the desk? I could still go back and do that tomorrow...

Anyway, what cool things have you found?

i just vacuumed out an old rug and found a tiny diamante stud earring that has apparently been embedded in the rug for over two years and three moves, one transcontinental.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 11 November 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

you should take it back.

I found a pound in a locker at work. The locker had stuff in it, but was unlocked, so I took the pound. Then later I found another pound on the floor, and then later another pound in the ticket thing at a station. I think pound coins are attracted to me.

i once found a small yet hideous rubber goblinhead in a tray of small green plastic frogs: i asked asked the stall-owner "how much is this?" and he said "20p" without looking, then looked closer, visibly started and blenched, and said "10p, 10p!!"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

(The repeats in Mark's post are stunning, It's like he has backing singers)

Graham (graham), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I was once walking near a clinic the day after a windstorm, and I found someone's medical file (dozens of pages' worth of records) scattered all the way down the block. I picked a few up. They were dated 1979. So of course I kept them.

I also found a very helpful Guide to Pennsylvania's Caves and Caverns in the form of a children's activity book that someone left on a stoop in Hoboken.

I was always finding purses wallets and handbags, I alway took them to the police station or nearest responsible looking person though, coz I believed in all that karma and stuff - so I treated them like I'd hope my stuff would be treated if it was found. Then some bastard stole my handbag, so the next thing I find is mine! Not really, I wouldn't dream of it, I even feel funny going through lost property to see who it belongs to.

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I found $20 in a parking lot, almost under my car. It was used to pay back my dad for $20 he had given me to buy a new bathing suit on a trip because I'd forgetten my old one at home.

When I worked in the university library, I was putting a book back on the shelf when someone's passport fell out of it. A while later, a rather embarrassed-looking girl came up to the desk and said: "This might sound a bit stupid, but..."

"You were using your passport as a bookmark and handed it in by accident?"

"How did you gu... oh, thank you"

On the university computers it's possible to accidentally get to see other people's saved files, which is quite interesting. I mean, when it isn't incredibly depressing because of all the spelling errors. Here are some examples:
1.> > fais pas du tout de soucis pour toi... je suis sure que tu as des groupies a Cork!!!< <
2.hi, thanks for getting back.
*Its 4 bedroom flat,
*has two bath rooms - upstairs and downstairs
*big lounge and kitchen, with washing machine and dash washer
*garden in the front
*room up for rent is double bedroom
3.Main objective.
To transform the prose Fantastic Mr Fox into a play script.(I afraid I do not know how to put spaces between lines. duh. )

fascinating stuff.

alix (alix), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I once dropped the house's rent check. I back tracked where I had been since I thought I last had it. I saw a white piece of paper fluttering on the back tire of an SUV with my Landlords name on it. Thanks Tony baby

gabriel (gabe), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I found an old Chris Knox t-shirt at a Goodwill in Irving, TX. So OK I was shopping, but I'd say the odds are astronomical.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother once found a cherry pit...in an apple pie.

The two best things I've ever found were a first U.S. edition of a book I'd been wanting to read (not in very good shape, but it probably was worth $8-10), and a $100 bill scudding along the street.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I once found a Corey Hart cassette lying in one of big round handwashing fountains. Saint Anthony, WTF were you thinking?

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

We once found a giant American flag. On top of a flagpole. That we had to, um, pull down and rip off. So it's more "stealing" than "finding" but you get my gist.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I have j lu (and thus maria) beat: I found $600 on the ground this summer. oh yes.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've found a couple of books (handiest: Rough Guide To Greece, left on a wall at Delphi, perhaps as a generous gift to other tourists by someone who was about to depart), and a Rodney Dangerfield cassette.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I found $600 on the ground this summer. oh yes.

! Now if that had only happened to me, I could have replaced that very amount ripped off by an old housemate...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

And I loaned nearly that much to a friend who won't be able to pay it back any time soon.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)
