they have added 30 minutes to the movie and re-released it on dvd. now what of the people who bought the original dvd release? was this always planned? i don't have the dvd but i wonder if the new one is worth the cash, four cds means probably way expensive.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 11 November 2002 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

this was always planned. I didn't intend to buy any versions but I heard, when they released the one they did, "don't buy it if you really like it--they're releasing a four-disc one just before christmas, haha."

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Normal version:£17.99
Four Disc Set:£22.49
Four Disc Set with Bookends:£33.74

From Amazon.co.uk, prices may vary elsewhere, I imagine.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The bookends are well naff though. Avoid! Am getting the four disc version for my mum's birthday - she asked for it, even though she finally gave in and bought a DVD player when the the 2-disc set came out. I believe my maternal parent is a bit of a rockist.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, I heard about the expanded set when the original small one came out.

I'm not entirely convinced by DVD extras as a concept, so there might be something to be said for just buying the basic one.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, always planned as noted above. Me, I got both. ;-)

My copy of the extended version is still en route from the folks I ordered it from -- shipped on Friday, should be here tomorrow -- and I'm looking forward to it and then some. Extra footage, four different commentary tracks and all the documentary stuff? Please, bring it on!

Then there's that minor movie coming out next month...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

:) i have decided to give the bookends a miss though. *zooms to amazon to pre-order copy one day before...* :)

katie (katie), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Forget the bookends, that set also has an extra documentary! Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

OI!! RAGGETT!! UPDATE!! (i did not get to order mine cos home computer has DIED, chizzz!)

katie (katie), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit this thread just reminded me the video of this is merely UPSTAIRS! And it's due tomorrow (today really), and it's 3am! I'm off.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're literally unconvinced, than there might be an argument for getting the extras version, it being non-scandinavian Film Of The Year last year? If they pull it off, then you win, and if they don't, then who can, and your mind is made up!

I am here assuming that you think FotR rocks.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The most pricey version has one more than the next most? I haven't heard this anywhere.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the bookendy one also has the National Geographic documentary included, which you can get separately. certainly i've seen this on packshots of the bookendy one, though granted i havent actually seen any packshots of the non-bookendy one, so it's possible i am talking out of my Ring of Sauron...

katie (katie), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you're right and Amazon are wrong. Extra NG documentary and "Three exclusive Decipher trading cards and a mini-magazine from The Lord of the Rings official movie fan club".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

but what is in the extras? are we talking extra scenes or tiresome making-of documentaries? to paraphrase Trish Byrne, when I read a book I don't then want to read another book about how the author wrote the book.

are there loads of deleted Tom Bombadil sex scenes in the expanded version?

OI!! RAGGETT!! UPDATE!! (i did not get to order mine cos home computer has DIED, chizzz!)

Hasn't arrived yet! The mail doesn't come in until midday and I won't see it until I'm home. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

My supermarket researcher tells me that the 4 disc DVD is on sale in ASDA for less than £20

Mooro (Mooro), Saturday, 16 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

the four disc LOTR is fantastic - i was only luke warm over the film, but the making of discs are wonderfully made. it covers everything from adaption to post production, set design, casting decisions - everything. and the commentaries are wonderful. i still only like the film, but absolutely adore peter jackson's approach to film making as a process. worth every penny...

chris browning (commonswings), Saturday, 16 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Finally started to watch it last night, but was just too tired from the week! So I'll finish it today, but so far, rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, you need to watch this week's South Park, since it's all about LOTR. And nasty porn. I think the repeat of it is on sometime this weekend.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I heard something about that being a pretty good rip on it. Will check the schedule...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

My supermarket researcher tells me that the 4 disc DVD is on sale in ASDA for less than £20

They were of course WRONG! No such dream deals exist, sorry :(

Mooro (Mooro), Saturday, 16 November 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah, okay -- having finished my watching of it (or rather just the extended film itself sans any of the commentaries or the documentaries or...), it's actually a bit of a mixed bag, in ways. There were a few scenes that I think were quite wisely cut because the tone didn't quite work for the full story as it stood -- jokes that stood out, sudden shifts in how characters were talking that the editing didn't quite cover. But in other ways it's just different enough all around to make it a slightly different film that draws out some of the implications and motivations of Tolkien-via-Jackson (as opposed to Tolkien straight up) very well. Also, since there's both new music and some notably different reediting at points, it's much more of a compare/contrast experience than simply one of extra scenes included; I knew they were going to emphasize that but I didn't appreciate how much even a small change here or there could bring.

And of course now I'm even more hyped up for the next one. If that was at all possible considering how up I've been for it already!

(Special note for Sarah and Katie -- your objects of perving and lust do indeed have a nice bit of singing and table-dancing while drinking right near the start. Your hearts will flutter.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Watched the expanded version last night, more than a little tipsy. Biggest problem with it: you have to switch discs halfway through the movie. Considering just how much material other DVDs fit onto a single discs, I can't believe this was necessary -- unless it's because of the four audio commentary tracks, in which case they simply should have put the full movie on both discs, with different audio options.

The added and expanded scenes are pretty nice -- I haven't watched any of the documentary bits, etc. -- but they make for a very long movie.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 16 November 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

You're worried over a technical feature? Get a multidisc player. ;-)

I believe it was a combination of image quality and commentary features that made it double disc, along with the extension of the movie itself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

ten years pass...

In earlier versions of Jackson's script, Sauron would indeed "come forth" at Aragorn's challenge, and do battle with him

wtf, i mean jackson is a disgusting savage but even having considered this confirms him as the worst human of all time.

Yeah there's some test footage of this on the documentary stuff with the extended ROTK. A bad idea thankfully dropped.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

reminds me of that letter i posted a link to a while back where tolkien mused over what would've happened if every single character had to fight sauron one-on-one. (hint: frodo would not have done well.)

cruel but the thought of christopher tolkien writing about middle earth does spring to mind tbh

seven years pass...

Haha I just saw this:

Speaking of "saw," interesting nuts and bolts issue at hand here, in that it claims over 4 million "views," but there is no way anyone watched more than a few seconds of this.
